Say it ain't so! Netflix has unveiled its complete lineup of shows and movies coming and leaving its platform in June 2025, and guess what film made the departure list? M. Night Shyamalan's Trap. With this movie not being a Netflix original and instead licensed for a limited time, it’s no surprise it’s heading off the platform. However, we just aren't ready to say goodbye to this suspenseful thriller so soon.
Netflix just added Trap to its library mid-March with the exact release date being March 11, 2025. The streaming giant has now set the film's departure date for Wednesday, June 11, 2025. That means Netflix only had the rights to stream the film for a three-month window, which is pretty short if you ask me. Unfortunately, there's nothing we can do about it except make sure to watch the movie or rewatch it before it disappears. Who knows if it'll ever...

The idea of a Barney movie being released by A24, produced by Academy Award-winning actor DanielKaluuya, and written by and starring Emmy-winning actress Ayo Edebiri sounds like a joke in an SNL sketch. However, it most certainly is real. In fact, A24's Barney might be one of the most fascinating IP adaptations since Barbie. The Barney movie was first announced in 2019 but now appears to be gaining some real traction as Kaluuya is putting a strong creative team together for the live-action reboot.
Variety reports that Ayo Edebiri has joined the in-development Barney movie as both screenwriter and star. Daniel Kaluuya’s 59% Productions is partnering with A24 to produce the film, working closely with Mattel Films, the owners of the Barney IP. Even though Kaluuya has been overseeing Barney's creative development as lead producer, he is not expected to star in the film. Details on the plot of Barney are under wraps,...

It's difficult not to appreciate a great movie with a hard-to-pass plot twist. Modern viewers are always down to find that chink in the armor and being invested in pinpointing the abnormality in an otherwise straightforward story. That's when the full force of a genuine plot twist knocks the fans' socks off because a good film pulls the rug under the viewers when they least expect it.
Fortunately, filmmakers this year have been successful in surprising movie watchers with edge-of-the-seat reveals and a surreal shift in the story that completely morphs a film's trajectory. It's safe to say that a good number of spectacular movies in 2024 had the ability to baffle the audience with a twist that left people either utterly blown away or scratching their heads. Millennials are getting quite the gift with the current Josh Hartnett renaissance. The star's boyish face could have graced any cover of "Non-Threatening Boys" monthly back in the late '90s. After a nice run of movies in the last few years, Hartnett is leading a new action comedy Fight or Flight, the latest movie from Meg director James Madigan. While Hartnett has not often changed his appearance too much in the past, this time around he has certainly switched things up in a surprising way. Collider got the first-look pictures from the film for Britain's Sky Cinema, and the actor's blond locks and brown beard are a far departure from his wholesome boy-next-door turned dad-next-door look.
Not many details about the film have emerged, even though the movie is set for release in the next few months, but according to the logline, Hartnett plays a mercenary sent to track...

In recent years, M. Night Shyamalan has traded big twists for big concepts. Or, he's found a healthier balance between the two. The director famous for his reveals in movies such as The Sixth Sense and Signs has recently focused his energy on high-concept movies like Old, Knock at the Cabin, and his most recent, Trap. As a director, Shyamalan is about as unpredictable as his third acts and as uneven. Still, his ability to craft worlds for his characters to inhabit has remained impressive throughout his career. M. Night Shyamalan's divisive $82 million hit Trap is now streaming on Max, and the 2024 film really deserves more love. Like many of Shyamalan's more recent films, Trap has divided audiences, with one sect of his fanbase claiming that it is just another one of the director's lesser films while the other sect claims that it is his best in years. The conversation around Trap has been the most interesting part of the film's release, and now that Shyamalan's new thriller has made it onto Max, an all-new group of viewers can join the discussion.
Director M. Night Shyamalan started his career as one of Hollywood's brightest upcoming filmmakers, with early films like The Sixth Sense and Unbreakable cementing him as one of the greats. However, later films like The Happening, The Last Airbender, and After Earth made many audience members sour on his films, greatly harming his reputation. 2016's...

There is no name in movie-making more synonymous with twists than M. Night Shyamalan. Ever since the iconic "I see dead people" in his breakthrough film, The Sixth Sense, there has been an ongoing expectation for Shyamalan to end his films with something that makes you second guess your entire viewing experience. For the most part, he has delivered, with films like Signs, The Visit, and even the recent Knock at the Cabin providing consistent shocks in their final scenes.
However, Shyamalan's most recent film, Trap, starring Josh Hartnett as a sinister father figure who attends a pop concert with his daughter, did not quite live up to the hype. In fact, Trap does not have a plot twist at all. It has a few curves, but nothing that lives up to that pre-existing Shyamalan standard. So what happens in Trap, and why don't the "twists" feel like twists compared to his other projects?...

The latest film by director M. Night Shyamalan, Trap, has finally received its streaming premiere date. These days, it isn't easy to find exactly what streaming service a movie will be on and when it will be available. In this case, Trap is coming to the Max streaming service, and it's available sooner than one might think. The film debuted in theaters on August 2, but it will now arrive on Max this October 25, just in time for Halloween.
Many Shyamalan films have a horror tinge, and Trap isn't any different. While not an outright member of the genre, Trap follows a serial killer who is trapped inside a concert with his daughter due to a heavy police presence surrounding the building meant to catch him. The film is loosely based on 1985's Operation Flagship, a real-life event where police arrested over 100 fugitives after luring them to a football stadium under the guise of free tickets.

Trap's streaming release date has now been revealed after the M. Night Shyamalan thriller earned $82 million at the box office. Released earlier this summer, Trap stars Josh Hartnett as a father who brings his daughter to a pop concert, eventually finding that the event is part of a law enforcement plan to catch a notorious serial killer. The twisty thriller, which also stars Ariel Donoghue, Saleka Shyamalan, and Alison Pill, marked Shyamalan's follow-up to Knock at the Cabin (2023), and earned mixed reviews from critics.
After becoming available on VOD on August 30, ComicBook.com now reveals that Trap is coming to Max on October 25, 2024. This streaming release date comes before the planned physical media release for the film, which is set for November 5. The film's streaming date comes almost three months after its theatrical bow.

M. Night Shyamalan's "Trap" emerged as the clear winner over Ishana's "The Watchers" in both quality and box office success. "Trap" showcased Shyamalan's storytelling prowess, earning higher Rotten Tomatoes scores and surpassing "The Watchers" at the box office. While M. Night's success is evident, "The Watchers" was a promising debut for Ishana, hinting at a bright future for the Shyamalan family.
2024 gave audiences two new movies from the Shyamalan family with Trap and The Watchers, and M. Night Shyamalan is officially the winner of the competing films. Heading into the year, Trap and The Watchers were counted as two highly anticipated titles for audiences to look forward to. Trap brought M. Night Shyamalan back to telling original stories, as the concert-set psychological thriller paired him with Josh Hartnett. Warning: The Following Contains Major Spoilers for Trap
M. Night Shyamalan is back in the spotlight once more thanks to his latest release, Trap, and while John Hartnett manages to do a good job commanding almost every scene hes in, theres one moment in particular that wasnt in the original script: the mid-credit sequence that featured Jonathan Langdons Jamie, the concert worker Hartnett was seen interacting with earlier in the movie.
Per Gizmodo, Shyamalan says the addition of the mid-credit scene was an afterthought, added to send the audience home with a laugh. In the sequence, we see Jamie watching the news, realizing that the man hed been talking with during the concert was actually The Butcher that the police were attempting to catch. It managed to tie up a small loose end in the film, instead of leaving audiences wondering what Jamie would be thinking after discovering that he was almost another victim.

Trap's post-credit scene was a spontaneous addition. The scene tied up loose ends instead of setting up a sequel. Shyamalan rarely includes post-credit scenes in his films.
Director M. Night Shyamalan explains how he included the post-credit scene in his latest psychological thriller Trap. Starring Josh Harntett, Saleka Shyamalan, Ariel Donoghue, Alison Pill, and Hayley Mills, Trap follows Harntetts character, Cooper Adams, a man who leads a double life as a family man and as a serial killer known as The Butcher. In the usual Shyamalan style, the movie contains several plot twists, but the director also tacked on a post-credits scene.
Now, according to Gizmodo, Shyamalan, discussing his recently released thriller, revealed that the surprise post-credit scene was not in the original plans for the movie. He added that it was an impromptu decision to add the scene, and everything eventually worked out. Read his full quote below:
That wasnt in the script.

Josh Hartnett shines in Trap, giving a stellar performance as a father and killer. The script's use of subtle humor adds depth to the storytelling but relies heavily on circumstance and convenience. M. Night Shyamalan's simple storytelling is marred by questionable character decisions and pacing issues.
M. Night Shyamalan, most notable for his multilayered storytelling and shocking twists, takes a different approach with Trap . With a classic "to catch a killer" setup by federal agents to pursue a high-profile criminal the film serves as an entertaining insight into the psyche and actions of a murderer. Josh Hartnett is the films centerpiece and delivers an exceptional performance. The script doesnt fully support his efforts thanks to silly mishaps and a sudden change in character perspective. But he's the glue that keeps it all together and the reason to see this film in theaters.

The film opens with doting dad Cooper (Hartnett) taking his daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) to the concert of A-list singer Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan). Cooper immediately notices the increased presence of heavily-armed police security at the show. After chatting with too-friendly t-shirt vendor Jamie (Jonathan Langdon), he learns the whole show is a trap to catch a serial killer named the Butcher. M. Night Shyamalan's new film, Trap, introduces Josh Hartnett in a role unlike he's ever played before. The actor has opened up on what intrigued him about the film and how the film takes audiences on a "weird ride" with his character.
In Trap, Hartnett plays Cooper Adams, a father taking his daughter (Ariel Donoghue) to a packed concert for her favorite pop star (Saleka Shyamalan). As revealed in the trailer, Cooper also happens to be the "Butcher," a serial killer whose identity has yet to be uncovered. In an attempt to capture the killer, the police set a trap for him at the concert, but he quickly becomes privy to their plan. In a new interview with Cbr's Kevin Polowy, Hartnett said he wanted to join the film as it seemed like it was a challenging role he was taking a bit of a gamble on.

Josh Hartnett considers his villain role in Trap as a career highlight that's 25 years in the making. The actor said he would have worked with director M. Night Shyamalan much earlier if given the opportunity.
Trap forces audiences to root for Josh Hartnett's undercover murderer, which isn't a problem for fans who've seen him play heartthrob roles early in his career. However, an overview of Hartnett's filmography revealed he's a very versatile actor; he first played a sociopath villain in 2001's O, a contemporary adaptation of William Shakespeare's Othello. The actor told Entertainment Weekly he wanted to be cast in an M. Night Shyamalan film since 1999, so he jumped at the opportunity after learning he was recently being considered for a role. He immediately realized that film hinged on a convincing depiction of the main character as a loving father who's secretly a serial killer.

Warning: This article contains major spoilers for "Trap."
There's a popular saying among genre fans that horror and comedy are, essentially, two sides of the same coin. It takes very similar storytelling instincts in order to pull off an effective scare as it does to deliver a genuine laugh: It's all about setups, payoffs, and messing with our expectations. To that end, there's nobody in the business who's proven themselves better suited to that task over the last 25 years than M. Night Shyamalan. With "Trap" (which I reviewed for /Film here), the filmmaker may have found the perfect vehicle to kill these two birds with one stone.

Night Shyamalan's Trap drops the hardest early 2000s-ass theatrical vibes I've seen in a hot minute. It's a Hitchcock x CW lockbox collaboration, except the box is the size of a Philadelphia arena. There's room for Shyamalan's shiftiness to breathe, misdirect, and overindulge — which isn't always a blessing. Trap is a tale of two halves; one the "killer in a stadium" mouse hunt, the other an "outside" procedural as the pursuit intensifies. The problem is, those halves don't play nice. Conceptual ambition transforms into contrived criminal escape antics, turning giddy chuckles into eye-roll sighs — but its divisiveness will be salvation for some.

Trap has earned a 46% score on Rotten Tomatoes. This is the worst score for director M. Night Shyamalan since 2019's Glass. The Rotten Tomatoes audience score for the movie is much better, giving the thriller 67%.
Trap has earned M. Night Shyamalan's worst score in half a decade. The movie is the latest outing from Shyamalan, a director who burst onto the scene at the turn of the millennium with well-regarded movies including The Sixth Sense before entering a long period of critical doldrums. The Trap release, which sees Josh Hartnett starring as a killer attempting to escape a concert that has been set up as a sting operation, comes after a time that the filmmaker has seen some critical rehabilitation after the release of more widely regarded works including Split and Knock at the Cabin.
Rotten Tomatoes has now calculated an official Tomatometer score for Trap by aggregating 37 different critics' reviews.

There’s a strong contingency of the internet that preaches the gospel of M. Night Shyamalan. The director has one of the strangest career arcs of all time. Even today, you’ll hear that he’s a Wunderkind, washed up, or a secret genius. Trap, his latest film, seeks to contribute to his upward trajectory in recent years. Sadly, despite wanting to love Trap, its inconsistencies and atrocious storytelling sink the ship in the final half-hour.

Few directors are more wily than M. Night Shyamalan. The director has long been known to play around with the audience, both for incredible entertainment and the occasional practical joke. However, after Split shocked audiences with its end-credit reveal, the ends of his movies have become as exciting as the latest MCU entry. Trap, his latest film, features a serial killing father seeking a way to escape a concert venue. With the police closing in from all sides, Shyalaman has the opportunity to build a longer story than one might have anticipated. So, how does he close out his latest thriller? According to M. Night Shyamalan, the premise of his latest feature boils down to a simple question: “What if The Silence of the Lambs happened at a Taylor Swift concert?”
It’s an inventive concept, but Trap delivers on one of those references more than the other. The film is a concert movie for Shyamalan’s daughter, the musician Saleka, wrapped in a middling thriller kept afloat by a compelling performance from Josh Hartnett.
Trap opens with Cooper (Hartnett), a dad-joke machine, and his daughter Riley (Ariel Donoghue) at a concert for pop sensation Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan). The stadium overflows with hyperactive adolescents, some waiting outside hoping to catch a glimpse of the singer emerging from her trailer and others practicing one of Lady Raven’s viral dance routines in the lobby.

In M. Night Shyamalan’s tense but psychologically spurious 2016 film “Split,” a group of young girls were trapped by a serial killer in a tiny, secluded room, and forced to figure out how to escape. Shyamalan’s new film “Trap” cleverly reverses that premise: A serial killer, trapped in a giant public building and surrounded by police officers at every exit, is also trying to escape — but do we even want him to?
“Trap” stars Josh Hartnett as Cooper, a firefighter taking his teenage daughter, Riley to see her favorite musician, Lady Raven (Saleka Shyamalan). As they work their way inside the crowded venue, Cooper notices police stationed everywhere, a lot more than usual, and given Lady Raven’s incredible popularity that’s saying something.

Josh Hartnett, the star of M. Night Shyamalan's latest thriller, Trap, prepared himself for the film by studying serial killers, and the actor learned a few interesting things, most notably: "They want recognition." Set to be released in theaters nationwide on August 2, Trap marks the actor's return to the Hollywood spotlight after a very long absence. For obvious reasons, preparation was a big deal.
In the film, Hartnett plays the father of a teen girl who rides along with his daughter to attend a pop concert. Josh Harnett, the actor who became a teenage heartthrob in the late '90s before suddenly backing away from Hollywood, has shared why he rejected major film roles just when he was on the cusp of becoming a huge movie star. According to the Oppenheimer star, it had a lot to do with toxic fan behavior and even some incidents of stalking. Most notably, Hartnett was at one point in talks to star in Christopher Nolan's Dark Knight trilogy, and was also seen as a potential Superman. Instead, he decided to walk away from the spotlight to focus on other things and prevent the stalking situation from reaching a dangerous point. Per Deadline, Hartnett explained:

Josh Hartnett was the only choice for Cooper in Trap. M. Night Shyamalan, who wrote and directed the upcoming horror-thriller movie, recently shared when he knew Hartnett was the perfect actor for the lead role.
In the weeks leading up to Trap's Aug. 2 release, Shyamalan has been sharing "fun facts" about his latest movie on X. He previously revealed that Trap was the fastest script he has ever written, at five and a half months, beating the six months it took to write Signs. More recently, he shared how a set visit from Hartnett ultimately landed the actor the lead role in Trap. "When I was thinking about casting the lead of Trap, Josh Hartnett came to visit me in Ireland where I was producing The Watchers," he wrote on X. "We had lunch, we talked about Oppenheimer, Black Mirror, living outside of Hollywood, and being dads of three girls each.
