Richard Donner at an event for 16 blocs (2006)
Superman ’78 Is the Sequel Fans Always Wanted
Richard Donner at an event for 16 blocs (2006)
Somehow, Richard Donner’s beloved 1978 Superman: The Movie didn’t spawn a successful franchise. A lovingly made celebration of the Man of Steel, featuring arguably the most perfectly cast superhero movie lead of all time in Christopher Reeve, immediately ran into directorial, financial, and creative trouble with its sequel, and the franchise ultimately sputtered out with 1987’s Superman IV: The Quest for Peace.

But Donner’s vision and Reeve’s performance were so definitive that they’ve influenced every new take on Superman since, from comics to TV and back to the big screen. But fans still dream of what other, better sequels could have looked like, and DC has answered the question with Superman ’78 by Robert Venditti and Wilfredo Torres.

Venditti, a longtime comics writer with wildly successful runs on characters like Hawkman, Green Lantern, and, yes, Superman under his belt, has always had an affinity for the Reeve era.

‘Superman ’78 #1’ Review
Image
Written by Robert Venditti | Art by Wilfredo Torres | Published by DC Comics

If ever there was a book I was guaranteed to review, it was this one. I cannot put into words how much I love the original Superman film, and the Christopher Reeve version of both Kal-El and Clark Kent. I first saw it as a young kid and was absolutely mesmerised by it. I have watched it literally hundreds of times down the years. Reviewing this book was an obvious slam dunk. Why Superman ’78 though? Those nostalgia dollars. DC have put out a few of these nostalgia fest books, Adam West’s Batman and Linda Carter’s Wonder Woman notably, and all have been hugely entertaining. There’s clearly a huge audience for these books, one of which is typing this. Superman ’78 though is the big one. The film literally changed superhero movies and DC Comics with its release,...

Jupiter’s Legacy: Mark Millar on the Genesis of His Superhero Story
Image
This article is presented by:

Superheroes have a long history. After flying onto the scene more than eight decades ago, led by Superman, along with fellow octogenarians Batman, Wonder Woman, and Captain America, the pantheon of capes-and-tights characters has expanded to include countless more. And as legendary creators made their mark across decades, the origins and powers of these icons transformed almost as frequently as their costumes.

Meanwhile, the superhero team The Union, from the comic book saga Jupiter’s Legacy, have 90 years of consistent fictional history, with a singular overarching story, envisioned by one man: Mark Millar.

After discovering both Superman and Spider-Man comics the same day, at the age of four in Scotland (where he grew up), the now 51-year-old writer would go on to make a significant impact on the superpowered set. But he wanted his own pantheon.

And with Jupiter’s Legacy, Mark Millar has created a long...

Superman '78 and Batman '89 Movies Are Getting Comic Book Continuations
Image
Still considered the benchmark of superhero cinema, two DC classics will continue on in the pages of new comics coming our way soon. Sure, Richard Donner's 1978 Superman and Tim Burton's 1989 Batman saw multiple sequels. But these new stories will be a continuation of what happened in the original movies before their follow-ups ever hit the screen.

Superman and Batman are two of the most beloved and iconic superheroes ever created. So it's no surprise that DC Comics is finding new ways to explore their ever-ongoing stories. Though continuing their adventures from the original blockbuster movies is a unique and new idea. Both of these new comics will be firmly set in the worlds originally created by directors Richard Donner and Tim Burton.

Both Superman '78 and Batman '89 will be part of the ongoing digital-first comic series. Rob Venditti wrote the story for Superman '78, which features art by Wilfredo Torres.

‘Jupiter’s Circle’ #3 is a married superhero story done right
Jupiter’s Circle #3

Written by Mark Millar

Art by Wilfredo Torres, Davide Gianfelice, Francesco Mortarino

Colors by Ive Svorcina

Published by Image Comics

Since 2007, when Joe Quesada and Marvel editorial broke up the marriage of Peter Parker and Mary-Jane Watson in “One More Day”, superhero marriages (happy or unhappy) have become exceedingly rare with initiatives, like the New 52, bringing in younger, unattached versions of iconic characters, like Superman, The Flash, and Green Arrow. In Jupiter’s Circle #3, writer Mark Millar and artist Wilfredo Torres (with help from artists Davide Gianfelice and Francesco Mortarino) say, “To hell with this” and tell the story of Flare, a superhero with a wife and kids who love him. But he meets a blonde, 19 year old grocery clerk’ wannabe crime fighter named April Kelly, who turns his world upside down. The tension in this issue isn’t between superheroes and the government, like in the previous two issues,...

Mark Millar and Frank Quitely's Jupiter's Legacy coming to film
Mark Millar
Mark Millar's Jupiter's Legacy is being adapted for film.

The Kick-Ass co-creator will team with Transformers producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura to bring his recent series to the big screen, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Millar teamed with acclaimed All-Star Superman artist Frank Quitely on the comic.

It centres around the children of a group of superheroes who received their powers in the 1920s after discovering a mysterious island.

The comic follows the antics of their offspring, who fail to live up to their heroic legacies.

A prequel spinoff, Jupiter's Circle, debuted this week with art by Wilfredo Torres.

"What appealed to me was the emotional weight of the family dynamic in Shakespearean fashion," said di Bonaventura. "It is also unique in a world where there are many similar superhero movies and IP."

Di Bonaventura is also developing Millar and Duncan Fegredo's Mph into a movie.

‘Jupiter’s Circle’ #1 reveals the humans beneath Silver Age archetypes
Jupiter’s Circle #1

Written by Mark Millar

Art by Wilfredo Torres

Colors by Ive Svorcina

Published by Image Comics

Jupiter’s Circle #1 is a prequel to Mark Millar and Frank Quitely’s Jupiter’s Legacy, a superhero family saga with an epic sociopolitical scope. It shows what Utopian, Walter, and their friends in the Union were up to in the late-1950s during the time of Eisenhower, the early seasons of Mad Men, and the Silver Age of Comics when superheroes returned to prominence. Artist Wilfredo Torres captures the bright, cheery, and yes, cheesy feel of this era with the characters’ garish costumes, wacky gadgets, and the giant space squid (colored in an electric blue from Ive Svorcina) the team fights. However, writer Mark Millar goes beneath the lantern jawed faces, form-fitting tights, and fisticuffs to explore the heroes’ personalities. There are six members of Union, and there simply isn...
