“Divinity,” the Sundance sci-fi feature from filmmaker Eddie Alcazar, has landed at distributors Utopia and Sumerian, the companies announced Tuesday.

The film most recently premiered at Sundance as part of the Next lineup and is being eyed for a theatrical release in the fall. Utopia and Sumerian together secured its worldwide rights.

Directed by Alcazar, “Divinity” stars Stephen Dorff, Moises Arias, Jason Genao, Mike O’Hearn, Karrueche Tran, Emily Willis, Scott Bakula and Bella Thorne.

Utopia, Sumerian Buy Stephen Dorff-Led Sundance Sci-Fi Thriller ‘Divinity’ (Exclusive)

Utopia and Sumerian have acquired worldwide rights to Eddie Alcazar’s Sundance-premiering “Divinity.”

The film had a memorable premiere in Park City, where there was a medical incident (unrelated to the movie) during its world premiere at the Egyptian Theater. Guests in attendance — who received zines and VHS boxes upon arrival — were also treated to writer-director Alcazar showing up to the event in a terrifying mask.

Executive produced by Steven Soderbergh and starring Stephen Dorff, the experimental film is set in an otherworldly human existence, where the creation of a groundbreaking immortality serum named “Divinity” is wreaking havoc.

Sundance: “Medical Incident” Causes Stir on Main Street During ‘Divinity’ World Premiere

There was plenty of buzz heading into Saturday night’s world premiere of Eddie Alcazar’s Divinity at Park City’s Egyptian Theatre, and by the time the screening ended, there were flashing red lights on the scene as well.

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that a “medical incident” occurred during the official Sundance Film Festival screening, but despite earlier reports, it was not as serious as it initially seemed. “The individual was treated and cleared,” a rep for the film tells THR. “No one went into labor. And the film was not stopped.”

Another source confirmed it was a “medical incident” but added that the individual was able to walk out and be treated. They are said to be in stable condition.

Deadline first reported news of the medical emergency, indicating that it was a woman who went into labor during the screening. That turned out not to be true...
