This Day That Year: 21 Years Of Deewaar: Let’s Bring Our Heroes Home
Image
Subhash K Jha revisits Milan Luthria’s Deewaar: Let’s Bring Our Heroes Home, which released in 2004 and stars Amitabh Bachchan, Sanjay Dutt, Akshaye Khanna and Amrita Rao in a new installment of This Day That Year.

Milan Luthria’s Deewaar: Let’s Bring Our Heroes Home is largely set in a prison camp in Pakistan. As in Steven Spielberg’s Schindler’s List, the barbed fence plays a pivotal part. Prisoners jump on it in frantic attempts to escape, the heroes get their hair hands, limbs and torsos bloody and swollen over it.

Barb re barb! Yup, the spiky fence is the real villain of Luthria’s second rugged boys’-day-out adventure… no ‘fence’ meant to the impressive cast of evil Pakistani army-men who lend a specific colour of ruggedness and adventure to the goings-on.

Screenwriter Sridhar Raghavan who shares writing credits with the director Milan Luthria and producer Gaurang Doshi...

Vikram Bhatt On 27 Years Of Ghulam
Image
Vikram Bhatt speaks with Subhash K Jha about his Ghulam, which starred Aamor Khan and Rani Mukherjee that released 27 years ago.

Vikram, how do you look back on twenty-seven years of Ghulam?

Looking back, twenty-seven years, I can’t believe how time has passed us by. Seems like yesterday. The making of Ghulam is a movie all by itself. Perhaps I should write a book on it.

Wasn’t Mahesh Bhatt initially roped in?

There is a story behind the story but I will leave that for the book. Boss (Mahesh Bhatt) told Aamir that should he not be directing Ghulam. Then there were two other directors in the company. Tanuja and me. Aamir chose to work with me because we had worked together before and had been good friends.

What was it like working with ‘Mr Perfectionist?’

Aamir has been wrongly called Mr. Perfectionist. He likes to put in...

Ram Gopal Varma On 22 Years Of His Mother Of Multistarrers – Bhoot
Image
Ram Gopal Varma’s eerie Bhoot, which clocks 22 years on May 30, stars, hold you breath, Rekha, Tanuja, Urmila Matondkar, Victor Banerjee, Nana Patekar, Ajay Devgan, Fardeen Khan….Varma is nothing, if not a pathbreaker. His Bhoot would be considered his finest directorial undertaking to date if Satya and Company hadn’t come along earlier on. Bhoot lacks the the spatial dimensions and dramatic impact of Company. While the “action,” if it can be called that, in Bhoot is largely situated in and around a highrise apartment in Mumbai , there are constant undercurrents of smothered expressions threatening to implode on Varma’s stunningly mounted frames. But like bits of bright molten lava, the tensions always recede just in time to remind us that in life, as in art, drama isn’t about what we see, but what we feel.

Throught this 2-hour song-less excursion into the realm of the supernatural, Varma...

27 Years Of Tanuja Chandra’s Dushman starring Kajol
Image
Subhash K Jha looks back at Tanuja Chandra’s 1998 film Dushman, which starred Kajol in a brilliant performance and Sanjay Dutt. We also hear from the director about the making of the film.

Tanuja Chandra’s grossly underrated film, Dushman, features Kajol in her career-best performance in a double role. When one of the twins is brutally murdered, the other takes revenge. The film was adapted from John Schlesinger’s tepid thriller An Eye For An Eye, where Sally Field avenged the death of her daughter. Several clever changes were made to the original script. In the original, it is the mother (Sally Field) who goes on a vendetta spree against her daughter’s rapist and murderer. In Dushman, it is the twin sister (Kajol) who seeks retribution, while the mother(Tanve Azmi) seeks closure to the tragedy. Dushman also added a romantic angle to the original with Sanjay Dutt...

Tanuja Chandra’s Underrated Hope & A Little Sugar
Image
The underrated Tanuja Chandra has made some memorable movies in her time. She made this delicate, sensitive, but little-seen film about a Sikh family in the US after 9/11 called Hope & A Little Sugar, released in India on April 18, 2008, made this film as a message of hope. The underrated film features Anupam Kher and Mahima Chaudhary as a Sikh father and daughter coping with the trauma of losing a dear one.

Tanuja said the idea for the film came from the thought that something that happens thousands of miles away can come from the same emotions that we in India have experienced, and even after such deep-rooted hatred, forgiveness is possible. That human beings do have the capacity to love one another. The subject of 9/11 is a deeply complex issue, and movies necessarily need to take sides in order to be effective. That makes this a difficult subject to tackle. More than being formalistic,...

Did Kajol Turn Down Gadar Before Ameesha Patel Took Over? Here’s What She Said!
Image
Was Kajol the initial choice for Gadar instead of Ameesha Patel?

In an industry where speculation often travels faster than confirmation, Bollywood has always had its fair share of casting rumors that are nothing more than a myth. One such longstanding rumor has revolved around the blockbuster Gadar: Ek Prem Katha. It was a film that not only defined Sunny Deol’s legacy but also catapulted Ameesha Patel to stardom as the soft-spoken, resilient Sakina.

For years, whispers suggested that the role was first offered to Kajol, one of the most celebrated and discerning actors of her generation. The idea has intrigued fans, imagining how Kajol’s dynamic screen presence might have shaped the film. But as it turns out, that image is purely fictional. At a recent event, Kajol finally addressed the speculation, setting the record straight.

Kajol denies getting an offer from Gadar: Ek Prem Katha

Subhash K Jha Selects Randhir Kapoor’s 5 Finest Performances On His Birthday
Image
It’s a pity that Randhir Kapoor got trapped in the image of a happy-go-lucky awaraa-nalayak version of his father Raj Kapoor. There was so much more to him than the rumbustious ho-ho-ho blustering bumpkin’s image that he was stuck with. Part of the blame for not breaking out of that stereotype must go to Daboo, alias Randhir Kapoor. He loved to be perceived as a typical Kapoor: overweight foodie with a snappy sense of humour who didn’t care for the hit-or-flop cycle of the box-office. But Randhir had the chops, and he had the hits. Take a look.

1. Kal Aaj Aur Kal (1971):

This was quite a family affair: that is to say, Randhir’s family his grandfather Prithviraj Kapoor and father Raj Kapoor, played their real-life roles while his fiancé Babita played his girlfriend. This was Randhir’s debut as an actor and director, and he was promising.

Vinod Mehra: The Invisible Actor
Image
Actor Vinod Mehra who was who was born on February 13, 1945, and who passed at age 45 on October 30, 1990, was never an active advocate of his own talent. You would never hear this quiet, polite, affable actor talking about his own performances, let alone his turbulent personal life.

Unlucky in love and marriage, he married twice before settling down to a peaceful matrimony with Kiran Mehra. They had two years and two children together before he passed away suddenly in 1990.

Sadly, Vinod’s personal life made bigger headlines than his quiet, assured performance in a never-ending stream of films from 1955 when he made his debut as a child artiste. Vinod did eight films as a child. His debut as a leading man in Ek Thi Reeta was unremarkable. In an era when actors shouted to be heard, Vinod was the mute performer. His performances never screamed for attention.

He never felt threatened doing heroine-centric film.

19 Years Of Mixed Doubles
Image
Some films just get you interested for all the wrong reasons. Think about it. This is a sex comedy about a bored and boring man who wants to pep up his life with a bit of wife-swapping… hardly the kind of theme and film that would qualify as little more than an effort to titillate audiences with a whole lot of junk feud in the domestic ambience.

Strangely and refreshingly Mixed Doubles, which completes 19 years on February 10, transcends the inherent limitations of its genre. The pincer-sharp dialogues (Anurag Kashyap) and a handful of believable actors who seem to understand the inner world of their urbane characters help to create a sense of lived-in reality in this brief film about giggly grief.

Director Rajat Kapoor, who made the quirky Raghu Romeo, seems to revel in the realm of the goofy. His ‘hero’ is a working-class bore, Sunil(played with acute fidelity...

Mould in which stars are cast: The Dev Saab I knew, worked with and admired
Image
If India ever had a star, it was Dev Anand. He was the mould in which subsequent generations of stars were cast. Dev Anand was born Dharamdev on September 26, 1923, in the Shakargarh tehsil of Gurdaspur district of Punjab. His father Pishori Lal Anand was a successful advocate and a follower of Mahatma Gandhi. Dev, the third of four brothers, graduated with English Honours from Government College, Lahore. He moved over to Bombay to join his older brother Chetan, who was trying to get a break in films.

Both brothers got involved in the progressive Indian People’s Theatre Association (Ipta). Chetan made ‘Neecha Nagar’ in 1946 and went on to win the Grand Prix at the inaugural Cannes film festival.

Dev told me that when he heard that Babu Rao Pai of Prabhat Film Studios was casting for a new film, he literally gatecrashed into his office and got the lead...

Both brothers got involved in the progressive Indian People’s Theatre Association (Ipta). Chetan made ‘Neecha Nagar’ in 1946 and went on to win the Grand Prix at the inaugural Cannes film festival.

They are incredibly talented and brilliant actresses but they are nothing like each other. I was surprised to witness how different they are. The only similarity they share is that they’re both very spontaneous when they are in front of the camera.”

“I like to improvise my scenes depending on the sequence we’re shooting and it worked like a charm with them as they would catch on to your flow and improvise themselves. They both have this edge to them that they’ll push you to be a better actor.
