When one starts watching Adult Swim’s Common Side Effects, it’s easy to feel confused about exactly what it is. Is it a comedy? A thriller? A drama? A sci-fi epic? A bizarre drug trip?
After a while, though, it becomes clear that the answer to all those questions is the same one. Just as it is for the question of whether this is one of the best new shows of the year:
Damn right it is.

When Adult Swim announced a new series executive produced by “King of the Hill” creators Mike Judge and Greg Daniels, fans would be forgiven for expecting a sharp yet sweet comedy. That is not what “Common Side Effects” is. Instead what premiered is difficult to explain, a series that serves as a tense conspiracy thriller as much as it is a bone dry comedy about ordinary people sucked into a saga that’s grander than they ever imagined.
In fact, “Common Side Effects” is a show so unique and unexpected, it confused the series’ original home at Amazon, which purchased the show in 2019. “We turned some scripts in, and they didn’t quite get it,” series co-creator Steve Hely told TheWrap.
It wasn’t until fellow co-creator Joseph Bennett (“Scavengers Reign”) made a short animation of the project that the duo was able to find other buyers. They eventually settled on Warner Bros. Discovery,...

Apple TV+ has come a long way since its debut, when it was more of a nebulous idea than a fully functioning streaming platform. One of the service’s best comedies from those early days, the Emmy-nominated Mythic Quest, is still chugging along though. The show, which follows a group of coworkers at a video game studio, returns this week with a fourth season that proves the series is comfortable in its skin but is smartly evolving alongside its characters as they enjoy the fruits of their labor in an ever-changing video game landscape.
In its long-awaited return — the first two episodes of which are now streaming — Poppy (Charlotte Nicdao) is finally embarking on her own journey, which proves difficult for Ian (co-creator Rob McElhenney), who struggles with their diverging paths. Elsewhere, the success of a new game leads to questions of proper compensation for Dana (Imani Hakim), while the...

“What if there were a medicine that could heal almost anything? What if they didn’t want you to know about it?” So goes every health grift, preached by everyone from snake oil salesmen to chumbox clickbait to, probably, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services in the not-too-distant future.
But no, really: What if?
This is the premise of Adult Swim’s Common Side Effects. And if the ingredient at its center sits squarely and obviously within the realm of science fiction, the all too plausible consequences that ripple out from its discovery are what make the animated thriller feel furiously relevant, dryly hilarious and strangely haunting.
The panacea in question is the “blue angel,” a rare Peruvian mushroom with the nigh-supernatural ability to cure anything from dementia to gunshot wounds to, possibly, death itself. It’s the groundbreaking find of Marshall Cuso (Dave King), a genius with the bare chest,...

Adult Swim's new animated series Common Side Effects follows a world where, when eaten, a blue mushroom can cure everything—including death itself.
The story sees Dave King's Marshall reuniting with his old high school lab partner Frances (played by Emily Pendergast) for help after discovering the mysterious blue mushroom.
It turns out that an object with such intense medicinal powers is something that Big Pharma doesn't want to see come to light, and they'll do anything in their power to keep that from happening.

By chance, a man finds a plant that was previously only the stuff of legends. He discovers that it has nearly supernatural powers to heal most ailments and injuries — even to revive the dead. Is his first instinct to share his findings with recognized scientific bodies? Definitely not: he’s pretty sure his once-in-a-lifetime find will mark him for assassination by Big Pharma, health insurance companies or the government — and probably all three conspiring together against cures that threaten their dominance. Can you even imagine living in such a world?
Adult Swim’s new animated series Common Side Effects has sci-fi elements, but otherwise seems to take place in a perfectly recognizable America, where pharmaceutical companies prioritize profits over social responsibility or care for its patients, and intractable student debt keeps desperate employees trapped in jobs for immoral employers. Basically, it’s come along just in time for the “Free Luigi” moment.

For more than two decades, Adult Swim has been one of the most exciting curators of cutting edge animated comedy. The network is still viewed as an arbiter of top talent and a place that greenlights series that would be impossible to produce anywhere else. Unfortunately, Adult Swim's output has seriously dwindled in recent years, which puts much more pressure on the few original series that they do turn out. There are still plenty of modern Adult Swim classics, but there's also an abundance of programs that have one or two seasons before they disappear into obscurity.
Thankfully, Common Side Effects boldly demands attention and is one of the most promising original projects that Adult Swim has produced in years. There's an excellent creative team at work here that's at the top of their game with a prescient story that eschews Big Pharma. To say that this show couldn't be...

Even if it’s not particularly star-studded in front of the camera, the new Adult Swim show Common Side Effects is full of behind-the-scenes A-listers for animation fans. Boasting a team that includes key creatives from Scavengers Reign, 30 Rock, The Office, Beavis and Butthead, and more, Common Side Effects has the talent it takes to be a knockout animated series. And guess what… it delivers.
Common Side Effects Review
Common Side Effects follows two friends — one a loner and the other a mid-level pharmaceutical employee — as they seek to unravel the mystery behind a rare fungus that has the power to cure every disease in the world. This is the type of ingenious but genuinely creative premise that makes you wonder how someone hadn’t thought of it yet, but perhaps we should be relieved by that, as the show’s creators, Joseph Bennett and Steve Hely, turn this premise into something utterly gripping.

"Frances look around - does this look healthy to you?" Adult Swim has revealed the full official trailer for another funky, strange new series called Common Side Effects, ready for streaming February 2025 in the New Year. The series first premiered at the Annecy Film Festival and was also unveiled at the San Diego Comic-Con this summer. It's sort of a follow-up to brilliant animated sci-fi series Scavengers Reign (watch it on Netflix now) as one of the creators of that series also helped co-create this. The show follows two high school friends, Marshall and Frances, who reconnect and discover a new kind of drug ("a rare mushroom") that can allegedly cure all illnesses. In the process, they also uncover a conspiracy involving big pharma and the government to suppress all knowledge of said drug. With the voices of Dave King, Emily Pendergast, Joseph Lee Anderson, Martha Kelly, and the legendary Mike Judge.

The Groundlings will host an improv musical fundraising event on Oct. 26, featuring Ana Gasteyer, Kristen Bell, Kristen Wiig and Will Forte. The event, held at the Performing Arts Center at Vista Del Mar, will benefit the Motion Picture & Television Fund to support below-the-line workers impacted by the strikes.
“One Night Only,” created and directed by Groundlings Main Company member Andrew Leeds, is a full production of a well-known Broadway musical. The catch? The improvisers are given the script and their roles only 24 hours in advance.
“These strikes have taken a terrible toll on our amazing crews, and it isn’t over yet. Even with the WGA strike ending, most crew members won’t be able to start work again until the SAG-AFTRA deal is ratified,” Leeds said in a statement. “Even then, many will be fighting to survive as they wait for productions to start back up.
