Catherine Smyth-McMullen is an award-winning screenwriter and creative producer, with a focus on genre.
Catherine's feature The Other Lamb premiered at TIFF 2019 as a Special Presentation, garnering rave reviews, and subsequently screening in competition at BFI London, San Sebastian, and acclaimed genre-festival Fantastic Fest. Produced by Rumble Films' Stephanie Wilcox and David Lancaster (Drive, Whiplash, Nightcrawler), IFC Midnight released the film theatrically and digitally in 2020. In TV, Catherine has worked extensively in Australian and U.S. writers' rooms and development as a writer, script editor and show-runner, and she has sold and set-up pilots with Netflix, NBC, Warner Bros., AMC and eOne. She was a writer on the first season of The Sandman (Warner Bros / Netflix), a writer / consulting producer on Two Sentence Horror Stories (The CW/Netflix), also writing the pilot episode; a writer on Bloom S2 (Stan/Hulu); and wrote the adaptation of Wentworth VR (Fremantle/Foxtel). She wrote the original short Parked, supported by Screen Australia and YouTube, which currently has 3.5 million views. Catherine's work has won or been shortlisted for many other national and international awards. She has won the John Hinde Award for Science Fiction from the Australian Writers' Guild, the Ustinov Award for Television Writing from the International Emmys, has been nominated for two AWGIE awards from the Australian Writers' Guild, and has been featured on the Black List, the Hit List and the Blood List for her original scripts. She is in development on multiple projects, including a feature adaption of her own award-winning horror short story 'The Nest'; as a co-creator of Twisted, a series adaption of the works of iconic Australian author Paul Jennings; and a book series adaption with producers Gale Anne Hurd and Phillip Kobylanski at Valhalla Motion Pictures (The Walking Dead). Catherine graduated in 2011 with a double degree in Arts (Film Studies)/Law from the University of Melbourne. She is represented by Chris Deckard and Krista Carpenter at Fictional Entity (US), and Candice Thom at RGM.
