Several famous musicians have been accused of misusing Covid relief funds.

According to reporting by Business Insider, a group of prominent artists took large sums of money from a pandemic relief fund called the Shuttered Venue Operators Grant that was supposed to help the arts industry.

Managed by the Small Business Administration, it was meant to keep “struggling independent venues and arts groups” afloat. Reporting suggests that the likes of Chris Brown, Marshmello, Lil Wayne and more took advantage of the grant, which offered a maximum of $10 million.

The Shuttered Venue Operators Grant provided assistance to more than 13,000 members who qualified. The Small Business Administration reportedly utilized “industry-leading fraud controls” to make sure that the funds were appropriately handed out.

Nearly two-thirds of sports content is consumed via streaming, but repetitive ads are frustrating fans
Image
During the 2024 NBA playoffs, the first bar of Rae Sremmurd’s “No Flex Zone” sent me scrambling for the mute button. The 2014 hip-hop favorite is the soundtrack to an inescapable Wingstop ad that played constantly during the playoffs and continues to show up in a high percentage of the commercial breaks I’m served on streaming services like Max and NBA League Pass.

Many sports fans share my ire for Wingstop’s “No Flex Zone” ad. Spots by telecom giant AT&T and insurance company Liberty Mutual (pictured) were equally ubiquitous, and the repeated serving of those ads was memed to death during the playoffs.

Image
"Beauty's an ugly business." Ain't that the truth. IFC Films has revealed the first official trailer for a crime thriller called Skincare, a new film from director Austin Peters. This is set to open in limited theaters in August at the end of this summer. Famed aesthetician Hope Goldman's skincare business faces sabotage when rival Angel Vergara opens a boutique right across the street. Aided by friend Jordan, Hope seeks to uncover who's trying to ruin her reputation. She becomes convinced this rival is out to sabotage her business and destroy her life. How far will she go for revenge? Elizabeth Banks stars as Hope, with Lewis Pullman, Luis Gerardo Méndez, Michaela Jaé (Mj) Rodriguez, and Nathan Fillion (!!). "People love a scandal. The internet is full of sickos." While this seems similar to The Substance (my review), it actually reminds me of Gwyneth Paltrow and Goop and how ridiculous beauty...

Fast X Composer On How His Newest Score Fits Into The Fast & Furious Franchise
Image
The Fast & Furious franchise is coming to a (prolonged) close starting with Fast X. The tenth installment in the long-running franchise is the beginning of the end for the core Fast family, and fittingly pulls out all the stops in the process. What’s more, even as the franchise speeds toward the finish line, it has introduced one of its best-ever villains in Jason Momoa’s Dante.

Of course, the Fast & Furious franchise is ultimately about family both on-screen and behind the scenes. Much of the creative team behind Fast X has worked on previous films in the saga, and composer Brian Tyler is no exception. Fresh off his masterful score for The Super Mario Bros. Movie, Tyler has created a bombastic score for Fast X that also adds fresh and new musical elements that fit perfectly with what has come before. Tyler’s score will be released...

Frank Ocean Hints at New Album at Coachella, but Says "It's Not Right Now"
Image
Image Source: Getty / Theo Wargo

Frank Ocean broke all the rules in 2016. Marked by its heart-shattering vocals, "Blonde" was an intimate and expressive sophomore album met with critical acclaim and continued devotion from fans. From "Nikes" to "Godspeed," the sorrowful lyrics had us hooked, but before the static-laced notes of "Futura Free" trickled to a finish, he was gone. Now, seven years later, Ocean's hiatus may finally be coming to an end. During weekend one of Coachella, Ocean appeared as a headliner at the 2023 festival alongside Bad Bunny and Blackpink, where he addressed rumors that a new album is in the works.

"It's been so long. Everybody talks about how long its been," he told cheering fans, according to video footage shared on Twitter. "It's been so long but I have missed you. I want to talk about why I'm here because it's not because of the new album.

Image
Rae Sremmurd are party starters first and foremost. Their 2015 debut, SremmLife, burned bright with blockbuster singles like “No Flex Zone,” “This Could Be Us,” and “No Type,” still club staples to this day thanks to the Tupelo, Mississippi, brothers’ exuberant charisma and Mike WiLL Made-It’s slick production. They were ahead of the curve, too, on viral challenges like “Black Beatles.”

It’s been a few years since we’ve heard Swae Lee and Slim Jxmmi make music together. Their last album, 2018’s SR3MM, was mostly a soft launch of their solo careers,...

American Music Awards Take Heat for Lack of Female Nominees as Bruno Mars, Drake and Ed Sheeran Top List
Bruno Mars
While Halsey is happy for her American Music Awards nomination, she's taking note of the fact that she's one of the only women who got one.

The largest fan-voted awards show unveiled its 2017 nominee list on Thursday, which was led by Bruno Mars with eight nominations, and followed by a four-way tie for second place, with Drake, Kendrick Lamar, Ed Sheeran and The Chainsmokers getting five nods each.

However, what got the attention of many on social media, including singer Halsey -- who was nominated with The Chainsmokers for Collaboration of the Year and Favorite Pop/Rock Song -- is the large gender gap present on the nominees list. Apart from the categories specifically designated for female artists in fact, the overwhelming majority of the categories have no female nominees at all. Additionally, every act nominated for Artist of the Year is a man.
