Exclusive: A strong cast of actors, financiers and producers has come together for Joachim Trier’s Sentimental Value, the follow-up to his critical and commercial hit The Worst Person in the World, which was Oscar nominated and took more than $12 million at the global box office.

That film’s breakout star Renate Reinsve is back to play the lead in Sentimental Value, as previously reported, and we can reveal that she will be joined by Stellan Skarsgård (Dune), Inga Ibsdotter Lilleaas (A Beautiful Life) and Elle Fanning (The Great).

Production has begun in Oslo on Trier’s anticipated sixth feature. It will film in Norway’s capital through November, with additional shoots in France, before launching in 2025. Refreshingly, the comedy-drama keeps Trier in his native Norwegian language.

Some movies tell a small story over a short period of time, which can be very entertaining, but a broad, sweeping tale across time and space is epic. Sci-fi is the perfect genre for grand, ambitious storytelling because the films often involve interplanetary wars, as well as the creation of planets and even galaxies beyond what's known.

Sci-fi also tends to generate multi-film franchises, which, by their very nature, are epic. More impressive, however, are single films that take an audience on a sprawling journey of adventure, peril, and triumph. Ranking the best sci-fi epics could be as easy (lazy) as a list of all the Star Wars movies, but the genre has so much more to offer.

Psychological thriller The Devil’s Bath has snapped up second place on Screen’s Berlin jury grid after scoring an average of 3.0 from the critics.

The latest from Austrian Goodnight Mommy duo Veronika Franz and Severin Fiala received one four (excellent) from Barbara Hollender (Poland’s Rzeczpospolita), followed by six threes (good) while Rita Di Santo (UK’s Morning Star) gave it a one (poor). Set in 1750, the thriller follows a newly married woman who commits a shocking act of violence.

Sidse Babett Knudsen went “completely visceral” in Gustav Möller’s prison drama “Sons,” premiering in Berlinale’s main competition.

“My approach was almost animalistic. That’s how she felt to me. She doesn’t know how to live: she has resigned into someone who can just survive,” says the acclaimed “Borgen” and “Westworld” actor who plays Eva, a prison guard with a secret.

“This environment matches her psychological state, driven by grief and guilt. Eva believes she is invisible. When people actually ask her questions, it takes an unnatural amount of time for her to respond. She can only function within these restricted walls, trying to give these inmates some kindness.”

When she spots a young inmate connected to her past, she immediately asks to be transferred to his block. A complex relationship forms, but Mikkel (Sebastian Bull) doesn’t know all about Eva.

Gustav Möller, who won the Audience Award at Sundance with his previous film “The Guilty,” has just completed the shooting of “Vogter,” a psychological thriller which has been boarded by Nordisk Film and Les Films du Losange.

“Vogter” boasts a stellar Nordic cast including Sidse Babett Knudsen, the BAFTA-winning actor of “Borgen,” Dar Salim (“Game of Thrones”) and up-and-comer Sebastian Bull.

The film follows Eva, an idealistic prison officer who is faced with the dilemma of her life when a young man from her past gets transferred to the prison where she works. Without revealing her secret, Eva asks to be moved to the young man’s ward – the toughest and most violent in the prison. Here begins an unsettling psychological thriller, where Eva’s sense of justice puts both her morality and future at stake.

Feature is being produced through new initiative Nordisk Film Spring.

TrustNordisk has boarded sales on Gustav Moller’s debut feature The Guilty, which is currently in post-production.

The Danish thriller has already caught the attention of buyers and festival programmers since it was pitched at Goteborg’s Work In Progress in January.

TrustNordisk will show a teaser to buyers as part of its Cannes promo reel.

Lina Flint produces the film through Nordisk Film Spring, a new initiative to support upcoming talents. The Danish Film Institute’s New Danish Screen also backs the project.

Spring was started by Flint (whose credits include The Elite) and screenwriter Emil Nygaard Albertsen in collaboration with Nordisk. Described as an “experimental creative collective,” it supports new talents and new ways of working.
