Ahead of 'The Conjuring: Last Rites,' Valak the Demon Nun Gets a Scary New Animatronic From Spirit Halloween
Image
We're halfway through 2025, and it's already been another stellar year for the horror genre. A ton of major franchises have returned, like Final Destination and M3GAN. However, when it comes to modern horror, there's no series as big as The Conjuring. The James Wan-created nightmare franchise has been successfully scaring moviegoers for over a decade, but The Conjuring: Last Ritesis set to be the final chapter for Ed and Lorraine Warren this fall. Before the main series comes to a horrifying close, though, you can now own one of The Conjuring’s most iconic demons.

Spirit Halloween just unveiled its 2025 wave of spooky animatronics, with Valak the Demon Nun being the centerpiece this year. The menacing decoration stands at five feet, eight inches tall. On top of that, “Valak’s arms open outward, and head lifts up as she lunges toward you for a realistic quick scare action. Eerie bell,...

‘As Night Falls’ Wraps Kent Shoot, Moves to Post-Production
Jack Parr
British genre outfit Nocturnal Pictures has pushed its second feature, “As Night Falls,” into post-production after completing a 27-day winter shoot across Kent and unveiling U.S. actor Mundey Young as the latest cast member alongside leads Jack Parr and Sophia Eleni.

Written and directed by company founder Leroy Kincaide, the 90-minute thriller is set five months after a global blackout, where survivors in an industrial estate are hunted by sound-sensitive inter-dimensional predators. Principal photography took place at the Historic Chatham Dockyard and other Medway locations, a region Kincaide previously used for his debut The Last Rite (2021).

Kincaide—once a heavyweight pro-wrestler who “transitioned naturally into acting after professional wrestling and was bitten by the filmmaking bug”—founded Nocturnal Pictures in 2014 and finances his projects independently. The director told an earlier Creative UK interview that his mantra “light loses its relevance without darkness” underpins the company’s slate of high-concept horror,...

Final Destination: Bloodlines North America Box Office Day 18 Update ( Photo Credit – YouTube )

The R-rated horror movie was awarded a B+ on CinemaScore. It was made on a budget of $50 million and is already a huge financial success. The film’s genre differs from other horror films, and the audience digs the characters’ helplessness against Death. Viewers feel relieved when the protagonist beats death. However, these films have consistently shown that no one can defy it.

'Sinners' Box Office Success Sparks Sequel Rumors for Ryan Coogler Horror Film
Image
Sinners, Ryan Coogler's horror film starring Michael B. Jordan, is an unstoppable force. As the film keeps bringing people back to theaters (even after a digital release date was announced), the vampire epic continues to smash industry records. In a matter of days, Sinners could top the most successful film in The Conjuring universe, a.k.a. the highest-grossing horror franchise of all time.

According to earnings registered at Box Office Mojo, Sinners has grossed more than $341 million since its Apr. 18 release. It is, by far, the most successful horror film of the year, and it shows no signs of stopping. If Sinners continues to perform well, the film will easily take over the spot occupied by The Nun. The Conjuring universe spin-off remains the biggest winner in the series created by James Wan. These numbers also make Warner Bros. Pictures the current dominating force in the horror genre.

'The Conjuring' and 'The Nun's Farmiga Sisters Could Not Have Their Characters Meet on Screen for Legal Reasons
Image
As The Conjuring franchise comes to an end with the upcoming sequel,The Conjuring: Last Rites, horror fans still have many questions about the arc that will serve as the conclusion of the Warrens' demon-busting journey. However, if you thought that Vera and Taissa Farmiga's characters would finally appear together on-screen, we got bad news. Vera's Lorraine Warren and Taissa's Sister Irene are not set to meet on Last Rites, and there's a very good reason for this.

Director Michael Chaves spoke to Entertainment Weekly about the sisters in real life having their character arcs converge in the upcoming movie, and while it was thought to be a possibility at some point, it is just not happening. Apparently, it is due to some legal issues related to the "true" stories that back The Conjuring's plots:

"I was really craving more of a connection, to be totally honest, between The Nun and the Warrens.

James Wan Hasn’t Given Up Hope On a ‘Crooked Man’ Solo Movie
James Wan
It’s been almost 10 years since the release of James Wan’s The Conjuring 2, which introduced the character of The Crooked Man, portrayed by Javier Botet. A solo spinoff movie for the character was first announced back in 2017, but it of course ended up being The Nun who became the film’s spinoff star. So what’s the status of that Crooked Man movie here in 2025?

Chatting with Entertainment Weekly ahead of the release of The Conjuring: Last Rites later this year, franchise creator/producer James Wan revealed that while there are still no current plans for The Crooked Man to get his own movie, Wan himself is still keeping the hope alive.

Wan tells the outlet, “I still have a movie in my head that I would hopefully love to get off the ground one day, but we’ll see. I get fans that reach out to me every now and then,...

‘Final Destination: Bloodlines’ Actress Anna Lore Joins ‘The Black Phone 2’
Image
Anna Lore has answered the call for The Black Phone 2, Deadline has learned.

The actress will next be seen in Final Destination: Bloodlines. Her credits also include “Doom Patrol,” “Gotham Knights,” and They/Them.

Ethan Hawke is back as The Grabber alongside Madeleine McGraw, Mason Thames, Jeremy Davies, and Miguel Mora, joined by Demián Bichir (The Nun) and Arianna Rivas (Prom Dates).

Derrickson previously described the sequel to Bloody Disgusting as “a high school coming-of-age movie in the same way that the first one was a middle school coming-of-age movie.”

Reports out of CinemaCon suggest that “The Grabber goes full Freddy Krueger and is seeking revenge on the kids from the first movie from beyond the grave.”

One of the Scariest Irish Movies Is Streaming Now For Free
Image
I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for Irish horror. The legends and myths just land with me for some reason (spoiler: I’m Irish), and there’s still infinite untapped potential within the horror genre to dredge up some of the scariest bits of Celtic folklore. Last year’s The Watchers gave it an earnest yet uneven attempt, and Evil Dead Rise’s Lee Cronin debuted with the A24 flick The Hole in the Ground, a terrifying tale of a changeling run amok.

Changelings tend to be the most popular, really. The sensational indie You Are Not My Mother tread similar ground with body-swaps, and The Cellar dabbles in some pretty frightening Lovecraftian mythos. Among the best, however, and a personal favorite of mine, has to be Corin Hardy’s The Hallow. It’s a stripped-down home invasion shocker that supplants conventional antagonists with a forest full of hostile fairies.

The Minions Franchise's 18 Greatest Villains
Image
Minions: The Rise of Gru performed exceptionally well at the box office, indicating that, under the care of the Minions, the Despicable Me film franchise is alive and well. This franchise got its start in 2010 with Despicable Me and continually succeeded with its brand of energetic, family-friendly humor through 2022's The Rise of Gru, the fifth film in the beloved series. One of the most entertaining aspects of the film series is the colorful cast of villains who try to thwart the franchise's antihero, Felonious Gru, or his Minions.

The villains each have a unique gimmick that sets them apart and an ample supply of zany weapons at their disposal. They also have some of the best villain names in the history of villains. Although all the Despicable Me/Minions villains are funny and diabolical in their own right, a few of them stand out from the pack.

Gang Dong-won and Kim Yoon-seok in Geomeun sajedeul (2015)
Film Review: Dark Nuns (2025) by Kwon Hyeok-jae
Gang Dong-won and Kim Yoon-seok in Geomeun sajedeul (2015)
In recent years, South Korea has sought to offer a more Western sense of theological inclusion in their genre fare. Starting with Jang Jae-hyun’s “The Priests” to his follow-up features “Svaha: The Sixth Finger” and “Exhuma” to titles like “Metamorphosis” and “Devil’s Stay,” there’s been an influx of outside elements incorporated into their films that speak highly of Christian or other Western forms of religious influence into their films. The trend continues with Kwon Hyeok-jae‘s latest feature film “Dark Nuns,” a semi-sequel spinoff of “Priests,” now in theaters from WellGo USA.

A boy named Hee-joon (Moon Woo-jin) becomes possessed by an evil spirit and the people around him struggle to save him. Nun Yunia (Song Hye-kyo) takes action to save the boy, who is overwhelmed by powerful pain and she never gives up on the boy. Nun Mikaela (Jeon Yeo-bin) takes an interest in Nun Yunia...

Why The Nun Is the Creepiest Conjuring Movie
Image
Ever since the 2023 release of The Nun II, fans have looked back on its predecessor to see exactly what made this film so unique to The Conjuring Universe. Although many viewers consider The Nun one of the worst installments in The Conjuring Universe due to how it often relies on classic jump-scares and mediocre plot twists to shock its audience, it utilizes unique thematic elements to create one of the most aesthetically creepy atmospheres of the entire franchise. This is a big part of why The Nun is scary, and why it's an important part of the overall franchise.

From The Conjuring to Annabelle, the essential theme that ultimately ties all the movies together into one cinematic universe is the Warrens. Based on the real-life ghost-hunting couple, Ed and Lorraine Warren, the Warrens of The Conjuring Universe find themselves entangled in various demonic plots and interconnected ghost antics, throwing them...

Nycc 2024: Lumina Cast Discuss Their Impossible-To-Describe Sci-Fi Movie, Its Alien Monsters & Eric Roberts' Role
Image
In the wake of an alien abduction, a group of friends go out in search of the truth in Lumina, the new sci-fi/horror/romance road flick from Gino McKoy, who writes, directs, produces, and serves as co-composer and VFX Supervisor on the film, among other hats. Shot entirely in Morocco, Lumina makes up for its low budget with its breadth of imagination and willingness to throw caution to the wind and just let the story unfold across as many genres and tonal shifts as it may encompass.

Lumina boasts an ensemble cast anchored by the always-game Eric Roberts. Alex, the lead character, is portrayed by Rupert Lazarus, but he's backed up by a group of friends played by Ken Lawson (Moesha), Andrea Tivadar, and Sidney Nicole Rogers (Maya), each of whom add some variety to the adventure.

Everyone likes to put themselves in the shoes of horror characters. We tell them, "Don't go in there!" We criticize them for doing stupid things. We gleefully imagine how we'd survive a zombie apocalypse. But what happens when that wishful thinking gets put to the test? Hulu challenged a New York City run club to outrun iconic horror characters, testing out that age-old question: "If you were in a horror movie, could you outrun the villain?" It's all in service of the yearly Huluween festivities on Hulu; check out the video above to see how it worked out.

Participants faced their fears as they raced to the finish line while trying to evade characters like Twisty the Clown from FXs American Horror Story, the Nun from The Nun II, and the Ghost from The Grudge, among others. A twist they didnt see coming?...

The Conjuring 4 Filming Start Revealed By James Wan With Set Photo: "End Of An Era"
Image
The Conjuring: Last Rites has begun filming, confirms franchise veteran and creator James Wan. As the fourth movie in The Conjuring franchise, the movie will serve as the swan song for the main series. The Conjuring followed paranormal experts and demonologists Ed and Lorraine Warren (played by Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga respectively) as they rid a familys house of an evil entity. The film was such a success that it led to two sequels and several spinoffs, most of them performing well with critics and grossing an impressive $2 billion at the global box office.

Co-producer Wan took to Instagram to share a photo from the set of The Conjuring: Last Rites. The photo itself is a picture of Wilson and Farmigas chairs, with their character names stitched onto the backs. Warrior Nun Movie Trilogy Gets Update From EP After 1 Year Of Silence
Image
Warrior Nun executive producer Dean English has offered an update on the series' planned movie trilogy after one year of silence after its revival was announced. After Warrior Nun season 2 ended, the show was cancelled by Netflix, resulting in a global fan campaign to have the series continue. In August of 2023, English announced the series would return with a movie trilogy. However, following the announcement that original showrunner Simon Barry would not be involved in this new iteration, news has been scarce about the status of the project.

Now, the fan-run Ocs Newsletter has published a letter from English to fans of Warrior Nun, breaking a year of silence surrounding the show's planned movie trilogy. The executive producer discussed the history of adapting Ben Dunn's comic of the same name, including how efforts have been ongoing for over 10 years. While remaining vague, he apologized for years of turmoil the adaptation's development has been under,...

First Look Set Photos Reveal Patrick Wilson & Vera Farmiga in Final Conjuring Film
Image
One of the most successful horror franchises of all time is The Conjuring universe. And we finally have our first look at the upcoming final installment. The Conjuring universe first got its start with 2013's The Conjuring, and after that was a hit, it continued to grow. Spin-offs from the franchise include Annabelle and The Nun, and the universe looks like it has no signs of slowing down. A big part of the appeal is the chemistry between stars Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga who portray Ed and Lorrain Warren respectively. While the real-life Warrens were controversial figures, the same can't be said of the on-screen version.

The duo are all set to return for the fourth and final installment with 2025's The Conjuring: Last Rites. Each of the films have tackled real cases, but we don't yet know what direction this one is taking us. What we do know...

Ghoulish Exclusive Clip From ‘Little Bites’ Takes a Bite Out of Some Flesh!
Image
Spider One (Allegoria, Bury the Bride) is back in the director’s chair with Little Bites, a horror movie produced by mother-and-son duo Cher and Chaz Bono.

Mindy has been secretly sacrificing her own life by allowing the creature to slowly feast on her body as she keeps Alice hidden away at her grandmother’s (Aarons).”

In the following exclusive clip, Mindy, brings the ghoul something not-so-good to eat.

One Of The 21st Century's Best Horror Icons Is Totally Unrecognizable In This 2001 Anne Hathaway Comedy
Image
Bonnie Aarons is surprisingly most recognizable when she looks nothing like herself, considering that her most famous role is the demon nun Valak in The Conjuring 2. Outside The Conjuring franchise, Aarons has appeared in over 50 movies, including some unexpected ones. She briefly appears in the comedy Shallow Hal, both The Princess Diaries movies, starring Anne Hathaway, and the psychological drama The Silver Linings Playbook. Still, Aarons is best known for horror movies, including Drag Me To Hell and I Know Who Killed Me, and The Conjuring franchise made her a horror icon.

Valak "the Defiler" is first introduced in The Conjuring 2, taking the form of the creepy entity known as the Crooked Man, as well as the white-faced, yellow-eyed nun. The ending of The Conjuring 2 shows Vera Farmig's Lorraine Warren sending Valak back to hell. Still, the demon nun image was so visually striking and popular with...

‘Little Bites’ Review – This Monster Metaphor Needs a Tighter Edit [Ff 2024]
Image
Monsters as metaphors are nothing new to the world of fiction, allowing creators to find novel ways to explore the unknown through horror tropes. The genre has seen a surplus of films using this device in the 10 years since Jennifer Kent’s The Babadook was released to critical and commercial success, and we can now add Spider One‘s Little Bites to the list. It’s a well-intentioned film, with the musician-turned-filmmaker delivering a visually striking parental horror film that boasts a strong lead performance, but it suffers from a transparent script and some severe pacing issues.

Widowed mother Mindy is in the middle of a depressive episode. She sends her daughter Alice (Elizabeth Phoenix Caro) to stay with her mother while attending to a hideous creature (Jon Sklaroff) that lives in her basement closet. “Attending,” in this case, means allowing the creature to bite Mindy all over her body...

‘Apartment 7A’ Movie Review: Paramount+ Prequel To ‘Rosemary’s Baby’ Is Unsurprisingly Bad
Image
Prequels to horror movies are a common practice. Based on audience reactions, a filmmaker’s interest, or the production house’s lust for the big bucks, some character or element from the original film is picked up and fleshed out via a story set in the narrative’s past. And the results are always very hit or miss. Final Destination 5 mostly played out like a standalone film and only revealed that it was a prequel at the end, thereby surprising everyone. Paranormal Activity 3, despite its insane box-office run, felt like an unnecessary addition to the franchise. Prey was so good that it almost surpassed the quality of Predator. Dominion: Prequel to the Exorcist was a huge mess. The First Omen impressed critics and audiences but seemed pretty unoriginal to me. Orphan: First Kill was straight-up bad. Prometheus was lambasted for being an unnecessary addition to the...

Mia Farrow & Patti LuPone In ‘The Roommate’: Odd Couple, Odder Play – Broadway Review
Image
Mia Farrow and Patti LuPone make for an appealing and very welcome stage duo in Broadway’s new comedy-drama The Roommate, a pairing that’s selling out the Booth Theatre in an engagement opening tonight.

Unfortunately, their third costar – a beige landline telephone that gets an implausibly large role for a play set in the current day – is required to pull more weight than it or the story can handle.

First produced in 2015 at a Louisville regional theater, Jen Silverman’s play shows its age with that wall phone – the superfluous presence of an iPhone suggests maybe there’s been some tinkering over the years, and, if so, not enough – while other details might have seemed dated even nine years ago.

And those aren’t the only flaws in this awkwardly paced, abruptly mood-shifting tale of two very...

How the Game of Thrones showrunners helped Hannah Waddingham land Ted Lasso
Image
Back in 2021, Hannah Waddingham won an Emmy award for playing Rebecca Welton, the emotionally vulnerable owner of the AFC Richmond football club, on the Apple TV+ show Ted Lasso. That was a career high for her, but Game of Thrones fans will likely always remember her as Septa Unella, aka the Shame Nun who rang Cersei Lannister through the streets of King's Landing during her infamous walk of shame.

As it ends up, the roles are connected, since Game of Thrones showrunners David Benioff and Dan Weiss personally helped Waddingham land the role of Rebecca, as Waddingham revealed to Today. "I got David Benioff and Dan Weiss to write an email to the powers that be," she said. "The subject was, 'What are we even discussing here?' It was such a beautiful, quiet, genuine endorsement of, 'Let the girl play.'"

Of course,...

Blade Runner 2099 adds Tom Burke and Maurizio Lombardi in recurring roles
Image
Tom Burke, who played the sort of Mad Max-esque character Praetorian Jack in Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga, and Maurizio Lombardi, who was recently seen as Inspector Pietro Ravini in the Netflix series Ripley, have been added to the cast of the Prime Video limited series Blade Runner 2099 – which is, of course, a continuation of the franchise that began with the 1982 Ridley Scott film Blade Runner and then got a long-awaited follow-up called Blade Runner 2049, which had Denis Villeneuve at the helm, in 2017. Deadline notes that Burke and Lombardi will both have recurring roles on the show, but details on their characters have not been revealed.

We’ve previously heard that Michelle Yeoh (Everything Everywhere All at Once) and Hunter Schafer (Euphoria) are set to star in the series alongside Dimitri Abold (The Hunger Games: The Ballad of Songbirds & Snakes), Lewis Gribben (Somewhere Boy), Katelyn Rose Downey...

5 Reasons Why Bill Skarsgard's The Crow Remake Bombed At The Box Office
Image
While the summer movie season has been generally strong for the last couple of months, this past weekend was a bumpy ride so far as new releases were concerned. MGM's "Blink Twice," the feature directorial debut of Zoe Kravitz, did well enough for itself with a $7.3 million domestic start. Unfortunately for Lionsgate, the long-gestating "The Crow" remake didn't fare nearly as well, to put it mildly. The new adaptation of James O'Barr's graphic novel of the same name had nothing shy of a disastrous start to its box office run.

Director Rupert Sanders' "The Crow" took in an estimated $4.6 million on its opening weekend, placing at number eight on the domestic charts. That was just barely above "Despicable Me 4" ($4.4 million), a movie that has been in theaters for going on two months. It also failed to gross more than the "Coraline" 15th anniversary re-release ($5 million), which is on its second weekend.

‘Beetlejuice Beetlejuice’ Tracking for Huge September Opening With Possible $80M
Image
Talk about juicy.

Director Tim Burton and Warner Bros.’ highly anticipated Beetlejuice Beetlejuice is tracking to open as high as $80 million at the North American box office when it flies into theaters Sept. 6, according sources with access to data from leading research firm Nrg.

Warners is being more conservative, suggesting $65 million to $75 million, considering that tracking has often been off as of late, either turning out to be too low or too high.

Either way, the fantasy horror-comedy is on course to scare up one of the biggest September debuts of all time, not adjusted for inflation. Topping that list is 2017’s It ($123 million) and 2019’s It Chapter Two ($91.1 million), both from from New Line/Warner Bros. That’s followed by Marvel Studios’ Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings ($75.4 million), which was released amid the pandemic in 2021, and New Line’s 2018 feature The Nun ($53.8 million).

Burton’s follow-up...

Stay with Us Review: A Thought-Provoking Journey of Faith and Family
Image
Gad Elmaleh takes on a deeply personal project with Stay With Us, a semi-autobiographical film examining his own questions of faith and family. Like Gad, the character he plays finds himself drawn to Catholicism despite coming from a Sephardic Jewish background. This new direction in his spiritual path sparks dramatic tensions as his friends and family struggle to understand his religious transition.

Born in Morocco but raised between Casablanca and Paris, Gad spent much of his youth exploring life’s bigger questions. Coming from a culturally diverse region, he developed an open curiosity about beliefs beyond his own upbringing. This independent spirit served him well as a comedian in both France and America, but now returns him to his roots in unexpected ways.

When Gad visits his parents and sister in Paris, they’re blindsided by news of his upcoming baptism. Knowing it may strain their close bonds, Gad finds the situation growing more complex.

The Conjuring Universe: 11 Connections Between Annabelle & The Nun
Image
The characters in The Conjuring franchise, including The Nun and Annabelle, are interconnected through various films, with ties to the main Conjuring movies. Valak, the demon nun, is the main antagonist in The Conjuring 2 and The Nun, and there are Easter eggs and theories that suggest a deeper connection between Valak and Malthus, the demon possessing the Annabelle doll in the Annabelle movies. Sister Irene and Lorraine Warren are revealed to be part of the same bloodline, explaining why both characters are targeted by demons like Valak and Annabelle. The characters played by Taissa and Vera Farmiga are also related in the franchise.

The expansive universe within The Conjuring franchise is broad, with tons of characters that interconnect within a number of films, including making connections between movies like The Nun and Annabelle. This is typical, as all the movies tie back to one of the Conjuring films. The Curse of La Llorona...

The Nun II's True Story, Explained
Image
The Nun II's story takes inspiration from a real-life legend. While the movie takes liberties with its real inspirations, it builds a connection between Irene and Lorraine Warren. The Conjuring Universe still has stories to tell, but The Nun II's real inspiration revealed a key piece of the puzzle.

Part of what makes The Conjuring Universe so captivating is that it is inspired by "true stories" based on the accounts of the real-life Ed and Lorraine Warren, who have investigated several paranormal occurrences. That being said, events veered a bit when the side character known as Valak was introduced in The Conjuring 2. As demonic figures go within this cinematic universe, Valak rates as the main antagonist, responsible for numerous hauntings throughout the series. Beyond that, its motivations are actually tied to a historical Christian martyr: Saint Lucy.

Introduced to fans in The Nun II, Saint Lucy was one of...

‘The Bell Keeper’ DVD Review
Image
Stars: Randy Couture, Kathleen Kenny, Reid Miller, Mike Manning, Bonnie Aarons, Chaz Bono, Cathy Marks | Written by Joe Davison, Luke Genton | Directed by Colton Tran

When the opening scene ended with a pretty cool and gory death, in what was a traditional but fun slasher film build-up, my hopes were kind of high. It feels like we have had very few new slasher movie villains to get excited about. Of course, Michael Myers, Chucky, Ghostface and more are still going strong but other than Art the Clown in the Terrifier franchise, no one seems to have lasted for more than one movie in more recent times. So when Randy Couture is standing tall as Hank, giant axe in hand, things were looking up. But the movie doesn’t quite pan out the way I was expecting.

The Bell Keeper follows a group of friends, including two brothers, who travel to a campsite at Lake Bell.

‘The Watchers’ Trailer – Ishana Night Shyamalan Opens Her Own Horror Mystery Box in Theaters This June
M. Night Shyamalan in Le dernier maître de l'air (2010)
M. Night Shyamalan returns to theaters in August with new thriller Trap (watch the trailer here), but first up we’re getting the feature debut of his daughter, Ishana Night Shyamalan.

Director Ishana Night Shyamalan’s (“Servant”) horror movie The Watchers is coming to theaters on June 14, 2024, and New Line Cinema has released a brand new trailer today.

This full trailer for The Watchers gives us a much better idea of what’s going on here, while still retaining the core mystery at the center of the film. All we really know is that there’s a building in the center of the woods that’s observed on a nightly basis by… someone. Or something.

These mysterious creatures watch a group of humans like their own twisted version of reality TV. “No one sees them and survives,” one character states. A different character says, “They have come to our world for a reason,...

Hannah Waddingham Will Always Be Iconic in This Role
Image
Emmy Award-winning actor Hannah Waddingham is widely known for playing the biscuit-loving team owner of the Richmond Football Club in Apple TV+’s Ted Lasso. But before she became Rebecca, Waddingham played a much smaller, more serious role in the HBO series Game of Thrones. Septa Unella, better known as the “Shame Nun,” made a striking appearance in Game of Thrones Season 5, Episode 7 when Cersei Lannister (Lena Headey) was led through the streets of King’s Landing naked. Amid her walk of atonement, Waddingham’s Unella methodically rang a bell, exclaiming “Shame! Shame!” over and over again. The “Shame Nun” might only be in Game of Thrones briefly, but not only is Septa Unella a source of internet memes, but the character is one of the catalysts for Cersei’s undoing. Waddingham’s Game of Thrones role will always be an iconic one that lives on long past the ending of the show.

Bad Habits: 7 of Horror’s Scariest Nuns Ahead of ‘Immaculate’
Image
Between The Nun II, Sister Death, Consecration, the upcoming The First Omen, and the newly released Immaculate, starring Sydney Sweeney, it’s safe to say that nuns are having a moment in horror. So often, fear thrives in the unlit nooks of the unknown, and for many of us, that includes those who dedicate themselves to religious orders. Shrouded in intrigue and literal fabric, the combo of unwavering religious devotion and rejection of various worldly pleasures makes nuns ripe for genre exploration. While nuns are certainly trending, this is by no means the first time horror has blessed us with terrifying tales featuring such religious women.

In Häxan (1922), possessed nuns mingle with witches as director Benjamin Christensen explores the connection between mental health and mass hysteria. With movies like Alucarda (1975), Ms. 45 (1981), and St. Agatha (2018), the subgenre of nunsploitation comes into play to further explore themes of religious and sexual oppression.

‘The Piper’ Review – ‘Rift’ Director’s Fairy Tale Horror Movie Plays a Deadly But Familiar Tune
Image
The German legend of The Pied Piper of Hamelin is the basis of two recent horror productions. The first of these “twin films” to receive a wide release is Erlingur Thoroddsen’s take, which shares the same title as Anthony Waller’s adaptation. And although both reimaginings feature demonic updates of that famous ratcatcher, only Thoroddsen’s story appears to underscore the musical component.

The Piper finds Charlotte Hope’s (The Nun) character Mel trapped in a familiar situation: her aspirations come at a great cost, and the consequences will be harmful. Here the young composer wants a future in her orchestra ensemble as well as the means to take care of her deaf daughter (Aoibhe O’Flanagan). Stealing a concerto from the estate of her recently departed mentor (Louise Gold) seems like the only option, but once the protagonist goes through with the plan, Mel’s conductor (Julian Sands) then...

‘Drag Me to Hell’ – New Australian Blu-ray Celebrates 15 Years of Sam Raimi’s Horror Return [Review]
Image
Of all the masters of horror that helped to reshape the genre as we know it in the ’70s and ’80s, none were more successful in branching out and achieving commercial success within the studio system than Sam Raimi. His Spider-Man trilogy laid the groundwork for the influx of comic book movies that would follow, but he was eager to return to his roots following the third installment’s turbulent production.

Armed with $30 million and complete creative control, Raimi dusted off a story he wrote with elder brother and frequent collaborator Ivan Raimi back in the ’90s to make his triumphant return to horror with Drag Me to Hell in 2009. The Raimi broters seemingly drew inspiration from 1957’s Night of the Demon but injected it with a heavy dose of Evil Dead DNA, most closely evoking Evil Dead 2‘s cartoonish blend of over-the-top splatter and tongue-in-cheek humor.

If the use...

Creep I.E. Con Returns With Texas Chain Saw Massacre and Scream Reunions
Image
In 1974, Tobe Hooper‘s The Texas Chain Saw Massacre changed the face of horror. Next month, actors Ed Neal, John Dugan, Allen Danziger, Teri McMinn, and William Vail will participate in the first official 50th anniversary cast reunion at Creep I.E. Con in Southern California.

Brett Wagner, who donned the Leatherface in the 2003 version of The Texas Chainsaw Massacre before suffering from heat stroke during the production, will also be among the celebrity guests. Dubbed “The Lost Leatherface,” he dawned the iconic flesh mask as he claimed the remake’s first victim, played by Eric Balfour.

“We were filming the summer months in Austin,” Wagner explains. “It was so hot. I felt it coming. I hit the ground.” He returned to finish the scene after rehydrating, but he describes the effects of the injury as “the most pain I’ve ever been in in my life.” Unable to wait for his full recovery,...
