After weeks of speculation, Cannes Delegate General Thierry Frémaux confirmed Thursday morning that Sam Levinson’s Euphoria follow-up The Idol will screen out-of-Competition at the festival.

Frémaux said he expects to see lead actor and co-creator Abel Tesfaye, who performs music as The Weeknd, on the Croisette for the premiere alongside co-star Lily-Rose Depp. The Starboy singer, Frémaux said, is a regular at the festival and has often traveled incognito to screen films playing in Competition.

Update, April 27 at 4:01 pm Et: Actress Suzanna Son has parted ways with HBO series “The Idol.” The news was announced just one day after director Amy Seimetz stepped away from the project, with co-creator and executive producer Sam Levinson expected to takeover directing duties despite the series already having reportedly filmed a majority of its Season 1 episodes.

Deadline reported that now “Red Rocket” breakout Son is also leaving “The Idol,” which stars series co-creator The Weeknd and Lily Rose-Depp. The outlet noted that The Weeknd allegedly felt the show was “leaning too much into a ‘female perspective'” according to sources.

Update, April 26 at 3:06 pm Et: Director Amy Seimetz officially exited “The Idol.” The “Girlfriend Experience” co-creator was slated to direct all episodes of the HBO music industry drama. As Deadline reported, executive producer Sam Levinson is now “expected to have more of a role in directing” the series.

The network said Monday it was “evolving” its creative vision for the show, which was set to feature the “Blinding Lights” singer, otherwise known as Abel Tesfaye, in his first major on-screen acting role, as well as Lily Rose Depp’s first lead TV role.

“The Idol’s creative team continues to build, refine, and evolve their vision for the show and they have aligned on a new creative direction. Much like this summer’s Comic-Con @ Home, Nycc — taking place Thursday, Oct. 8 through Sunday, Oct. 11 — will be streamed via the event’s YouTube channel. The new Animaniacs, from Amblin Television and Warner Bros. Animation and again exec produced by Steven Spielberg, will bow Friday, November 20 — some 22 years after the original wrapped its run. Hulu’s new anthology drama Monsterland will premiere on Friday, October 2; Eater’s Guide to the World will be served up Wednesday, November 11; and new drama No Man’s Land bows Wednesday, November 18.

I Am Greta, a feature-length docu about the teenage climate change activist from Sweden, will begin streaming Friday, November 13, on Hulu.

Hulu announced the premiere dates for several of its upcoming 2020 originals during a virtual Ctam panel Friday, including the launches for the “Animaniacs” reboot, the supernatural anthology “Monsterland,” the Greta Thunberg documentary film “I Am Greta,” the drama “No Man’s Land” and the Maya Rudolph-narrated series “Eater’s Guide to the World.”

First up is “Monsterland,” which begins streaming on Hulu Friday, Oct. 2. Then “Eater’s Guide to the World” launches Wednesday, Nov. 11, followed a couple of days later by the premiere of “I Am Greta” on Friday, Nov. 13. “No Man’s Land” debuts Wednesday, Nov. 18, just before Steven Spielberg’s long-awaited return of “Animaniacs” drops Friday, Nov. 20.

“Monsterland,” which received the greenlight for eight one-hour episodes last year, will feature encounters with mermaids, fallen angels, and other strange beasts which drive broken people to desperate acts. It is based on the collection of stories from Nathan Ballingrud.

Tran joins previously announced cast members Kaitlyn Dever, Taylor Schilling and Mike Colter.

Exclusive: Leaping from last week’s Season 1 finale of Evil, Mike Colter is wasting no time getting truly scary in Monsterland. The star of the latest CBS series from Michelle and Robert King has joined Hulu’s horror anthology series.

The Annapurna TV-produced anthology series — which is full of encounters with mermaids, fallen angels and other strange beasts — follows broken people driven to desperate acts in an attempt to repair their lives, ultimately showing there is a thin line between man and monster.

Monsterland is based on the short stories from Nathan Ballingrud’s collection, North American Lake Monsters.

Colter will play Brian in the episode, titled “Newark, New Jersey.” It centers around Brian, a grief-stricken husband (Colter) who blames himself after his daughter disappears under his supervision. The WGA Awards boosted a pair of movie screenplays into Oscar frontrunner status on Saturday night, handing its marquee Original Screenplay award to Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won for Neon’s Parasite, and its Adapted Screenplay award to Taika Wiatiti for Searchlight’s Jojo Rabbit. Both of the winning scripts are nominated for Oscars on February 9.

This year the guild wasted no time in its 72nd edition, awarding its marquee prizes early in the night in simultaneous ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York. Many of the film-side nominees gathered in the Edison Ballroom in NYC, so as to make the shorter jump to the BAFTAs which are Sunday in London.

The Bong Joon Ho and Han Jin Won-penned South Korean class thriller “Parasite” won Best Original Screenplay and Taika Waititi’s Nazi satire “Jojo Rabbit” won Best Adapted Screenplay at the Writers Guild Awards Saturday night.

The annual awards, which honor the best in film, TV, and radio writing, were handed out at dual ceremonies in New York and Los Angeles.

Both “Parasite” and “Jojo Rabbit” are in the running for Oscars in their respective categories.

“Parasite” bested three Best Original Screenplay nominees up for the Writers Guild Award: “1917,” “Knives Out,” “Marriage Story,” and “Parasite.” The WGA swapped the fifth Oscar-nominated script, “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood,” in favor of a nomination for “Booksmart.”

The Writers Guild of America revealed its winners for the 72nd annual edition of its awards, which were held simultaneously at the Beverly Hilton Hotel in Los Angeles and at the Edison Ballroom in New York City on February 1. About 15,000 WGA members vote on the best writing of the prior calendar year in an array of genres.

But beware Oscar predictors: Often a few film scripts nominated for an Academy Award are deemed ineligible. Only screenplays written under the guild’s guidelines or those of several international partners are allowed to vie for the WGA Awards. That accounts for its relatively low success rate at previewing the eventual Oscar nominees compared to the other guilds.

Among those ineligible for consideration this year are some of the leading Oscar contenders, including the original screenplays for “Once Upon a Time in Hollywood” and “Pain and Glory.” The former is by Quentin Tarantino,...

Writers of The Crown, Succession and Watchmen are among the television nominees for this year’s Writers Guild Awards, unveiled on Thursday (5) by the East and West branches of the Writers Guild of America (WGA).

Joining the three projects in the list of drama series nominees are writers of The Handmaid’s Tale and Mindhunter. Nominees in the WGA’s new series category include PEN15, Russian Doll and Watchmen.

In the original long form category, nominees include the writers of Chernobyl and True Detective and the adapted long form category includes Fosse/Verdon and Unbelievable.

Writers Guild of America West and Writers Guild of America, East have announced nominations for outstanding achievement in television, with Netflix’s The Crown, Hulu’s The Handmaid’s Tale, Netflix’s Mindhunter and HBO’s Succession and Watchmen competing for the top drama trophy.

The outstanding comedy nominees are HBO’s Barry, Amazon Prime’s The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Hulu’s PEN15, Netflix’s Russian Doll and HBO’s Veep.

Best new series nominees are PEN15, Russian Doll, Watchmen, Netflix’s Dead To Me and FX’s What We Do In The Shadows.

Also announced were nominees in the new media, news, radio/audio and promotional writing categories.

Winners will be honored at the 2020 Writers Guild Awards on Saturday, February 1, 2020, at concurrent ceremonies in Los Angeles and New York City.

“The Simpsons” is leading the way with three Writers Guild of America nominations, followed by two each for “Bob’s Burgers,” “The Crown,” “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” “Pen15,” “Russian Doll,” “Succession,” “Veep” and “Watchmen.”

Fox’s “The Simpsons,” which began airing in 1989, scored noms in the animated category for the “Go Big or Go Homer,” “Livin’ La Pura Vida” and “Thanksgiving of Horror” segments. Fox’s “Bob’s Burgers,” which won the category for 2018, received nominations for the “Bed, Bob & Beyond” and “The Gene Mile” segments.

Amazon Prime Video’s “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel,” which won the WGA comedy series award earlier this year, received nods for comedy series and for the episode “It’s Comedy or Cabbage,” written by showrunner Amy Sherman-Palladino.

Ava DuVernay’s Netflix miniseries on the Central Park 5, “When They See Us” did not recieve any nominations, with the WGA instead picking “El Camino,” “Fosse/Verdon,” “The Loudest Voice” and “Unbelieveable” in the adapted longform category. In the original longform category, the nominees were “Chernobyl,” “The Terror: Infamy,” “True Detective” and the upcoming Disney+ movie “Togo.”

Hulu is set to develop a supernatural anthology series based on the short story collection by Nathan Ballingrud, North American Lake Monsters.

According to Variety, the first season will consist of eight episodes and the stories will revolve around vampires, fallen angels, and other monsters that force Louisiana natives to re-examine their broken lives.

The series is being created by Mary Laws, who will write and executive produce it. She previously co-wrote the screenplay for Nicolas Winding Refn’s 2016 film The Neon Demon. She also went on to write for and produce the fantastic AMC series Preacher.

This is the kind of show that I know I would enjoy. I love these kinds of stories and they’ve got a talented person on board to bring it to life.

Hulu has ordered eight episodes of a new horror anthology series based on “North American Lake Monsters,” a collection of short stories by Nathan Ballingrud, a spokesperson for Hulu confirmed to TheWrap on Friday. The series hails from “Preacher” writer and producer Mary Laws, Babak Anvari, Lucan Toh and Annapurna Television.

“The Untitled Mary Laws Project” (working title) is created, written and executive-produced by Laws. Per the network, encounters with vampires, fallen angels and other monsters force Louisiana natives to re-examine their broken lives in this contemporary horror anthology.

Lucan Toh will also executive produce along with Babak Anvari (“Under the Shadow”), who is also signed on to direct. The series is produced by Annapurna Television.

Hulu has greenlit a series adaptation of Nathan Ballingrud’s short story collection “North American Lake Monsters.”

The untitled series will be an anthology, with the first season consisting of eight episodes. In the series, encounters with vampires, fallen angels, and other monsters force Louisiana natives to re-examine their broken lives.

Mary Laws created the project and will serve as writer and executive producer. Laws previously co-wrote the screenplay for the 2016 Nicolas Winding Refn film “The Neon Demon” and went on to write for and produce the AMC series “Preacher.”

Lucan Toh and Babak Anvari will also executive produce, with Anvari also set to direct. The series is produced by Annapurna Television.

This marks the latest anthology project for Hulu in recent years. The streamer currently has “Castle Rock,” which is produced by J.J. Abrams and based on the work of Stephen King, and the Blumhouse project “Into the Dark.

Hulu has given an eight-episode series order to a horror anthology series based on North American Lake Monsters: Stories, a collection of short stories by Nathan Ballingrud, from Preacher writer-producer Mary Laws, Under the Shadow and Wounds filmmakers Babak Anvari and Lucan Toh, and Annapurna Television.

Created by, written and executive produced by Laws, The Untitled Mary Laws Project (working title) is a contemporary horror anthology in which, through encounters with Gothic beasts, including fallen angels and werewolves, broken people are driven to desperate acts in an attempt to repair their lives, ultimately showing there is a thin line between man and beast.

Toh and Anvari executive produce with Laws. Anvari also is set to direct. Annapurna Television produces for Hulu.

Things have been adjusted to be slightly more palatable and less graphic for public consumption, but everything people wanted to see from Preacher is still there on TV in one form or another. European filmmakers seem to favor theme and concept over actual execution which may be one reason why American audiences appear so resistant to the overseas offerings. For example, Danish director Nicolas Winding Refn had a fairly interesting idea about exploring female villains, inspired by the real life doings of mass murderer Countess Elizabeth Báthory. He coupled that notion with the universal themes of youth and beauty, setting his tale in Los Angeles and the fashion model field. Unfortunately, despite a strong American cast, the European sensibilities failed to bring the ideas to life and The Neon Demon arrived cold, sterile, and thoroughly uninvolving.
