Paramount pushes family films, adult comedies in CineEurope slate presentation
Image
Paramount will lean into the comedy genre with its upcoming slate of titles, presented yesterday (June 18) at CineEurope.

On panel sessions at the trade convention, cinema operators have been calling for more-rounded film slates, and decrying the lack of adult-skewing comedies that in the past have been supplied by the likes of The Hangover, Ted, Judd Apatow productions and Adam Sandler vehicles.

In upcoming months, Paramount will release both The Naked Gun and Scary Movie 6.

Announced is Meet The Parents 4, starring Ben Stiller and Robert De Niro, which Paramount has for international markets and Universal in North America. Ariane Grande will join the cast.

Paramount Declares Comedies Are Back With New ‘Naked Gun’ Footage; Trots Out Extended ‘Running Man’ Look – CineEurope
Image
With his usual flair, Paramount President of International Theatrical Distribution, Mark Viane, kicked off the studio’s CineEurope presentation today with a hysterical video that reimagined him as the head of “The Paramount Squad,” a reference to the upcoming Naked Gun reboot. Sporting a white wig, Viane was joined by other Par execs including the Emea team while the mini film also nodded to upcoming studio titles including Smurfs and the latest Spongebob movie, among others.

After the video and as he took the stage here, replete in boxers and skirt à la Liam Neeson’s Frank Drebin Jr in The Naked Gun, Viane exclaimed, “Comedies are back!”

The Naked Gun starts global rollout on July 30, getting to domestic theaters on August 1. Neeson introduced an exclusive look at the movie via a video message and cheekily said to exhibitors, “remember to book my movie — or I am coming for you.

AMC Entertainment CEO Says Three Of Six Major Studios Agree 45-Day Window Needed – CinemaCon
Image
Exclusive: Adam Aron, chief executive of AMC Entertainment, said there’s more agreement around extending exclusive theatrical windows than one might think given the tensions bubbling among the exhibitor community and pretty much exploding at CinemaCon this year.

“I have at least three of the six major studios who are completely in agreement that we need to bring back the 45-day window,” he told Deadline on Wednesday as the biggest annual event for theater owners and studios kicks into high gear in Vegas. “And that’s a good start.”

AMC is the largest theater chain in the U.S and globally.

“Now, if you look at every studio except for Disney, the window is 18 to 36 days. For Disney, the window is 60 days. Good for Disney … and Disney’s been a very successful studio. So we shall see. But the largest exhibitor in the United States is in serious dialogue with...

Windows, costs, gloomy press coverage dominate CinemaCon Day 1 panel
Image
Windowing, costs, marketing, and gloomy press coverage were dominant themes to emerge from the first day of CinemaCon, as film executives looked forward to the arrival of tentpoles in 2025 and into 2026.

On the back of Gower Street Analytics revising upwards its 2025 global box office forecast to $34.1bn, speakers used International Day programming to remind attendees at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas what they already know and want: longer exclusive theatrical windows, a better mix of film genres throughout the year, cinema upgrades, and targeted campaigns to lure audiences into auditoriums.

“The industry is working arm-in-arm more than ever,” Vue International...

Warner Bros’ Jeff Goldstein Sounds Alarm On Economics Of Making Movies: “We Have To Figure Out How We Can Right The Ship” – CinemaCon
Image
The major story in Hollywood, says Jeff Goldstein, president of Global Distribution for Warner Bros. Pictures, is how expensive it’s getting to make movies and to market them to a fragmented audience even as technology sends first reactions to a film around the world in a “nanosecond.”

“That’s the bigger story here,” he said on a CinemaCon panel Monday as the Las Vegas confab kicked off with talk of windows, marketing, cinema advertising and international markets. “The economics of making motion pictures” are more problematic now than ever. “What’s that value proposition? he said. “How do you make movies that net a studio money in today’s economy, and particularly from legacy studios? It’s much different than streaming companies that have different kind of funding.”

“We have to figure out how we can right the ship,” he said, adding, “I think that we’ll get there...

Gladiator II secures an R-rating for all the bloody action
Image
Ridley Scott and Paramount have been hyping up the upcoming sequel, Gladiator II, immensely. Paramount President of International Theatrical Distribution Mark Viane would talk up the footage at this year’s CineEurope trade show and declared that he and his peers were blown away by early footage that they saw. Viane would also make the proclamation that Gladiator II has some of the “biggest action sequences ever put on film.”

Additionally, Scott teased, “We begin the film with probably the biggest action sequence I’ve ever done,” Scott teased to Empire. “Probably bigger than anything in Napoleon.” With all the battles the film will feature, both in gladiatorial and war, it’s always been likely that Scott would not shy away from the violence the same way he didn’t with the 2000 original. The upcoming film ratings from the MPA have been released, and Ridley Scott’s Gladiator II has been rated R.

‘Gladiator II’ Will Feature Some of the “Biggest Action Sequences Ever Put on Film”
Image
If we wanted to be frank, Gladiator II, when originally confirmed, was among the more unexpected sequels we got. The history of Roman gladiators is a rich one, but when Scott’s original film first aired, especially with what happened to the main character, no one really thought that the story would be exploited further. But, here we are… we’re back in Ancient Rome, and the movie is, if everything goes according to plan, going to come out on November 22, 2024, and will star Oscar-nominee Paul Mescal as Lucius Verus, a character from the first movie.

Many cast members have been confirmed in the meantime and we’ve also seen some photos from the set, and it seems that everyone is hyped up for what is to come later this year, and according to some information from the filming, what is to come is going to be very, very entertaining and dynamic.

Exclusive footage from the sequel, confirmed for a 2024 release, was screened at a trade show to high praise. Director Ridley Scott promises a worthy follow-up to the original Gladiator after 25 years, with an impressive cast lineup.

New footage from the long-awaited Gladiator 2 was recently screened to a trade audience and the new sequel, led by Paul Mescal, reportedly features one of the biggest action sequences in cinema history. The sequel to Ridley Scott's Gladiator (starring Russell Crowe) was first announced back in 2018. However, its production has been fraught with difficulties, resulting in several delays. But, with principal photography complete, and reshoots currently ongoing, Gladiator 2 is moving closer and closer to completion.

Per Variety, footage from Gladiator 2 was screened at the 2024 CineEurope trade show and was the main event of Paramount's presentation.

As fans await the first trailer for Gladiator II, the upcoming historical film sequel continues to generate buzz as a worthy successor to the Oscar-nominated original. Paramount's president of international theatrical distribution, Mark Viane, adds to the intrigue by suggesting the follow-up will feature some of cinema's greatest action scenes.

Speaking during the CineEurope trade event in Barcelona, Viane and director Ridley Scott introduced Gladiator II, showing extended unreleased footage of the highly anticipated sequel. Viane claimed during the presentation that Gladiator II boasts unprecedented quality, insisting it has the biggest action sequences ever put on film. Gladiator II will have some of the biggest action sequences ever put on film, as claimed by Paramount Exec
Image
Gladiator II has curious eyes on it as many await to see how Ridley Scott will continue the story that seemingly ended with Maximus Decimus Meridius. Although Russell Crowe himself is closely associated with the film, having won an Academy Award for Best Actor for the movie, as well as the movie itself taking home the gold. Crowe would not hold back on his feelings, saying how uncomfortable he was about the sequel being made. “I’m slightly uncomfortable with the fact they’re making another one — because, of course, I’m dead and I have no say in what gets done. But a couple of the things I’ve heard I’m like, ‘No, no, no, that’s not in the moral journey of that particular character’. But I can’t say anything, it’s not my place, I’m six foot under. So we’ll see what that is like.

Paul Mescal’s ‘Gladiator 2’ Rocks CineEurope With Epic New Footage as Paramount Execs Tease the ‘Biggest Action Sequences Ever Put on Film’
Image
While the seemingly never-ending saga over Paramount’s future ownership may be still rumbling on, the studio didn’t hold back when it came to putting on a grand spectacle at the 2024 CineEurope trade show.

“Gladiator 2” was — unsurprisingly — the main event of Paramount’s slate presentation in Barcelona. Ridley Scott’s return to Ancient Rome after almost 25 years was given top billing with a giant cardboard coliseum erected around the main auditorium, flanked by stern-faced Roman legionnaires. Audiences at CinemaCon in the U.S. may have gotten the first look at the hotly-anticipated sequel — starring a bulked-out Paul Mescal in the lead role — but across the Atlantic, CineEurope attendees were treated to some epic and never-before-seen extended footage featuring Mescal and co-star Pedro Pascal, alongside an as-yet-unreleased trailer. Denzel Washington, Connie Nielson and Joseph Quinn also star in the film, due out Nov. 15 internationally and Nov. 22 in the U.

Paramount Goes Epic At CineEurope With ‘Gladiator II’ Footage; Highlights ‘A Quiet Place: Day One’ & ‘Transformers One’
Image
Paramount went all in on Gladiator II at CineEurope today, showing off an exclusive extended look at Ridley Scott’s sequel to his 2000 Best Picture Oscar winner. Introducing the footage in a video clip, Scott promised that Gladiator II, coming nearly two-and-a-half decades after the original, is “well worth the wait”; the audience today agreed. That pre-roll clip also included stars Denzel Washington, Paul Mescal, Pedro Pascal, Connie Nielsen and Joseph Quinn. Paramount releases globally in November.

At the top of the show, President of International Theatrical Distribution Mark Viane once again had the CineEurope crowd in stitches with his annual entrance tied to a major Par title; this time appearing in gladiator garb in a cheeky pre-recorded video as Markimus Vianus and wearing a vest with the Paramount logo, celebrating the film and the theatrical experience as he urged members of Par’s international distribution team, “On my signal,...

In Wake Of Huge ‘Inside Out 2’ Debut, CineEurope Kicks Off Riding Wave Of Positive Emotions — But Need For More Movies Continues
Image
At the top of an executive roundtable kicking off CineEurope in Barcelona on Monday, Paramount’s President of International Theatrical Distribution Mark Viane gave a shout-out to the massive opening of Disney/Pixar’s Inside Out 2. “If anyone is here from Disney,” he said to the audience, “congratulations, you really helped kick-start the summer.”

Relief is not an emotion portrayed in the sequel, which exceeded expectations with a $295 million global bow, but it might as well be standing right alongside joy in the minds of the industry. There’s a sense of “phew” among some execs here, while some said they expected a turnaround to hit, while many also lament a negative narrative that’s been surrounding the industry overall.

As one studio exec said to me Sunday about IO2, “People needed this, especially going into CineEurope.” The conference annually brings together international (largely European) exhibitors and the Hollywood...

Paramount Lights The Fuse With ‘Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One’ Screening – CineEurope
Image
Paramount President of International Theatrical Distribution Mark Viane kicked off the studio’s CineEurope presentation with his annual fun pre-taped video, this time essaying the role of Mission: Impossible’s Ethan Hunt before appearing on stage dragging a parachute behind him in an homage to Tom Cruise’s latest spectacular stunt in Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One.

After shedding the accessories, Viane declared, “The movie industry is resilient,” and noted, “buying a movie ticket is the best value for out-of-home entertainment.” Theatrical movies must be presented to provide “the best experience possible,” he told the audience of exhibitors, and Plf screens “are clearly the winning formula.”

Paramount’s Mark Viane upbeat in CinemaCon opener, urges industry not to be complacent

Paramount’s president of international theatrical distribution Mark Viane struck a typically upbeat note for CinemaCon’s International Day keynote address on Monday, although he urged studios and exhibitors to avoid complacency and continue to work together.

Highlighting returning global box office – the three pandemic releases Avatar: The Way Of Water, Top Gun: Maverick and Spider-Man: No Way Home rank among the all-time top 15 global releases, while Gower Street Analytics just upgraded its 2023 global forecast to $32bn – Viane said there was work to be done.

Flying high with the success of Top Gun: Maverick, and before surprising CineEurope attendees with Tom Cruise himself, Paramount showed off its upcoming slate for exhibition Wednesday in Barcelona. ‘Paw Patrol: The Movie’ Collars Milestone As Pups Pass $100M At International Box Office
Image
Paramount/Nickelodeon/Spin Master’s Paw Patrol: The Movie has sauntered across the $100M threshold at the international box office. The Cal Brunker-directed animated action adventure now counts $100.3M to date overseas, and over $140M global.

The film has been on a staggered overseas rollout, beginning in just six markets in mid-August last year, and continuing to add new hubs throughout September and more with solid holds. The pups also got a late-breaking China release on January 14 this year, making Paw Patrol one of just a handful of Hollywood titles in recent times to be approved. The film has a 9.2 on Maoyan and has grossed $8.8M so far. There are still some markets ahead.

To date, Germany leads the international markets with $12.6M, followed by the UK ($12M), France ($11.5M), China ($8.8M), Poland ($5.3M), Spain ($3.5M), Mexico and Netherlands (tied at $3.1M), Australia ($2.9M), Japan ($2.4M) and Brazil ($2.4M).

Tom Cruise Makes Surprise Appearance At Paramount’s CineEurope Presentation; Tells Exhibitors, “We’re Out Here For You And We’re Never Going To Stop”
Image
Bringing CineEurope attendees to their feet, Tom Cruise made a surprise appearance at the exhibition convention here in Barcelona today. Cruise, who is the only star to have appeared live and in-person on stage this week, added some wattage to what outside pandemic times is typically a very talent-heavy affair. He turned up for Paramount’s presentation of its upcoming films and introduced a look at both Mission: Impossible 7 and Top Gun: Maverick.

Under a veil of secrecy, Cruise had flown into Barcelona from London where post is being finished on Mission 7, and told the assembled European exhibitors, “I wanted to come personally and thank you all. We’ve had a great relationship over 40 years of my career.” When making films, Cruise said, “I’m always thinking about you all” and “sharing the work in theaters.”

He noted he and the Mission: Impossible films teams are always trying reach a higher bar,...

Piracy Is Biggest Problem For Day-And-Date Releases, Say International Film Distrib & Exhib Chiefs – CinemaCon
Image
Of course, any kind of day-and-date release puts exhibitors in competition with the studios’ streaming services, and no doubt there’s a loss of cash in the collapse of the theatrical and PVOD window.

However, the worst takeaway from dynamic windows is piracy, plain and simple.

Such was the message from CinemaCon’s first panel today “Globally Speaking: A Look at the International Market” moderated by Deadline’s own International Box Editor and Senior Contributor Nancy Tartaglione. Joining her were Cineworld Group CEO Mooky Greidinger, Universal Pictures International President Veronika Kwan Vandenberg, CEO Cinépolis Alejandro Ramírez Magaña, and Paramount Pictures International Theatrical Distribution President Mark Viane.

Citing a local film journalist’s media poll, Magaña said that of 25K-plus respondents, close to a third watched Black Widow on a pirated site, to 13% on Disney+ and 28% in movie theaters. The exhibition boss mentioned that while previous forms of theatrical piracy entailed...

Paramount Pushes “A Quiet Place Part 2” And “Top Gun: Maverick” To Next Year!
Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
The steady stream of theatrical content away from 2020 continues. In addition to Disney’s news yesterday, Paramount has also opted to shift some of their tentpoles to 2021. Namely, they’re again pushing A Quiet Place Part 2 and Top Gun: Maverick. The former was one of the very first films delayed this spring when the coronavirus pandemic hit, while the latter has shuffled twice now as well. Both are not taking their chances with this year, opting for next year, instead. Considering how Covid-19 is still such an issue and how movie theaters remain largely shuttered, can you blame them? Read on for more… Variety has the story, detailing how both sequels are now firmly entrenched in 2021, when the world is hopefully back to normal. A Quiet Place Part 2, initially a March release here in 2020, is now hitting on April 23rd of next year. Top Gun: Maverick is jumping out of December,...

Top Gun: Maverick Thrusts to 2021
Tom Cruise in Top Gun: Maverick (2022)
Top Gun: Maverick has, once again, veered away from its primary objective of a release date. The reason remains the same: the escalation of Covid-19 cases, which have kept theaters shuttered for several months, with no sign of relenting.

Paramount has thusly shifted the release date of Top Gun: Maverick to July 2, 2021—nearly a year from now. Indeed, this marks the latest lengthy setback for the nostalgia-laden Tom Cruise blockbuster sequel, specifically the second six-month release date shift for the film, which was rescheduled a few months ago to land for a Christmas season premiere of December 23, 2020 after having been set for June 26, 2020.

As Paramount president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson said in a statement, “We truly believe that there is no movie-viewing experience like the one enjoyed in theaters.” To which Aronson’s international colleague, Mark Viane, adds, “We are committed to the theatrical experience and our exhibition partners,...

Jim Carrey and Ben Schwartz in Sonic, le film (2020)
As part of a series of updates to its slate, Paramount Pictures announced that its planned sequel to “Sonic the Hedgehog” will be released in theaters on April 8, 2022.

The studio also announced release dates for two other upcoming animated films: “Under the Boardwalk,” a new production from Paramount Animation releasing on July 22, 2022; and “The Tiger’s Apprentice,” a co-production of Paramount Animation and Skydance Animation starring Henry Golding and set for release on February 10, 2023.

“Sonic the Hedgehog” set a domestic opening weekend record for a video game adaptation with $58 million, going on to gross $146 million domestically and $306 million worldwide. The film was unable to get a release in China back in February due to the Covid-19 pandemic, but this past week received a July 31 release date in the lucrative Asian market as theaters have begun to slowly reopen.

Fans will have to wait until next year to see the sequels to “A Quiet Place” and “Top Gun.”

Both movies were part of a release date shakeup from Paramount on Thursday night. “A Quiet Place Part 2,” starring John Krasinski and Emily Blunt, will release in theaters on April 23, 2021, instead of Sept. 6, 2020. “Top Gun: Maverick,” a sequel to Tom Cruise’s 1986 classic, will take flight on July 2, 2021, nearly six months after its original date of Dec. 23, 2020.

“We truly believe that there is no movie-viewing experience like the one enjoyed in theatres,” said Paramount’s president of domestic distribution Chris Aronson, and president of international theatrical distribution Mark Viane. “We are committed to the theatrical experience and our exhibition partners, and want to stress that we are confident that, when the time comes, audiences everywhere will once again enjoy the singular joy of seeing Paramount films on the big screen.”

‘Top Gun: Maverick’ Flies Into Paramount’s CineEurope Presentation With Surprise Peek At Footage
European exhibitors this morning were the first audience to get a brief peek at Paramount/Skydance’s highly-anticipated summer 2020 title Top Gun: Maverick. Par showed off about two minutes of footage from the sequel to the 1986 smash hit in which Tom Cruise reprises his eponymous role as the flying ace. The domestic release is set for June 26 next year.

Smoke filled the stage floor at the close of Paramount’s CineEurope presentation this afternoon as Mark Viane, President of International Theatrical Distribution and Mary Daily, Co-President of Worldwide Marketing and Distribution, came out kitted in full flight gear to offer the brief snapshot. Attendees were blown away by the footage which had been kept tightly under wraps.

The first Top Gun gained iconic status 33 years ago, making north of $356M at the global box office which would equate to about $850M today. Daily said Maverick will continue the themes of the original.

Paramount CinemaCon Kicks Off With Comedy: Studio Boss Jim Gianopulos Gets Delayed In Las Vegas
After Disney’s underwhelming and button-down session at CinemaCon yesterday, Paramount livened the mood up in a big way with a hysterical opening reel of studio Chairman and CEO Jim Gianopulos contending with a ditzy chauffeur (Hayley Magnus of the movie The Dressmaker and NBC pilot Like Magic) as he tries to make his way across Las Vegas to CinemaCon.

But that wasn’t all, like Warners, Paramount brought out the stars for its Terminator: The Dark Fate, Rocketman, Sonic the Hedgehog and Dora the Explorer sessions.

It’s ‘a sequel’ reel to what Par showed at last year’s CinemaCon, where he dealt with an inept airline ticket counter receptionist at the Burbank airport. Now, as it turns out she is his driver and she takes him to all the wrong Cons in Vegas, i.e. CinemaKhan, a Star Trek convention where Patrick Stewart pops up, and a Godfather convention.

Monday Update, writethru with actuals: Paramount Pictures/Skydance’s Mission: Impossible – Fallout lit the fuse this weekend with an action-packed $155.83M worldwide opening to rep the best start ever for the Tom Cruise franchise. Out in just 36 markets for 40% of the offshore footprint, Fallout is currently 23% ahead of Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation‘s 2015 overseas start on a like-for-like basis.

As we noted in our global preview, anything above the $131.5M opening for 2011’s Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol reps a worldwide record start for Ethan Hunt & Co. With so much of the world to come on Fallout, including France, Japan and China (the latter dated August 31), it’s early to put a multiple on it, but $700M+ global...
