He was born into a middle class family in Tezpur, Assam. Being shy during his childhood made it difficult for him to communicate effectively. But, it developed his imaginary skills. So, thoughts that he couldn't share with others in person seeped into his imaginary world. And, suddenly, he could yell at his opponent, beat him black and blue, which he couldn't do in the real world.
This also made him visualize various hypothetical situations from his life from getting good grades in exam to expressing his love to even watching his parents cry over his funeral.
As he grew older, he would cook up stories about different Hindi films and tell his friends in school, just by watching trailers of those films!
At Std. VII, he watched Titanic at a theater. He was spell bound and it moved him very much. Sensing his interest in films, his supportive father got him a book titled, 'The Making of Titanic'. Each page of that book pushed him a little towards his resolution of making films. Creating a world with believable characters out of just pure imagination inspired him greatly and thus the journey of pursuing film making began.
After Std. XII, I was so keen to work in films, I thought to skip his higher studies and jump right away. But his father advised otherwise and suggested to study film making. Came to Kolkata in 2004 and got enrolled in Arena Multimedia for a two-and-a-half-year Diploma in Animation and VFX. He also enrolled for a Bachelors Degree in Mass Communication from EIILM University, Kolkata. He was pretty happy studying the stuff I love. Made short films, did photographic assignments, wrote articles and directed documentaries for his college projects. Along with creating assignments in 3D Animation and VFX, I was also the Team Leader at Arena Multimedia for all his semesters. But those innocent college years ended when he moved to Mumbai in 2007.
When he moved to Mumbai, he enrolled for a 4 Month Editing course to secure a job placement. I used to work part time on a TV Serial as an Editing Assistant during night shift and attend Editing classes during daytime at Digital Academy. From his first job at an Advertising Agency in Lower Parel to his last job at Futureworks Studio in Andheri West, he learned that the only way to realize one's dream is to work for it tirelessly.
"Films are made on the editing table". he took this statement a bit seriously and started working freelance as an Editor. Worked on various fiction and non-fiction projects. Collaborated with his friend Sowrik Datta (a writer/filmmaker), and made short films and learnt a great deal about films and life in general. From crashing hard drives to all the production challenges, they took each hit with a pinch of salt and never ever complained about it. Also, watching world cinema, award winning TV shows and films in general opened his mind to a great extent. That phase was an enriching experience which gave him the confidence to make his first film 'Dooronir Nirola Poja' (Hohim, faraway) in later half of 2014.
With almost no money and zero contacts, he skydived head on. And then, he realized that Shahrukh Khan was right! If you have a strong mind, the universe does conspire to make things happen. From casting to last day of production, his multitasking eight-member team did a fantastic job of supporting his vision. But, by then, his father's PF loan and his savings got exhausted.
God loves a stubborn heart. Ranjan Pattnayak, a friend from Mumbai, did the sound designing for free. Papon sang two songs without charging a single penny. He did all the post-production stuff from Editing, Grading, VFX to final DCP. And after almost two years of blood and sweat, 'Dooronir Nirola Poja' had its Online Release in 2016.
Faith indeed moves mountains. With a positive spirit and a strong hold over one's craft, one can do wonders. His first film got a theatrical release in July 2017 and just before its release, he got an offer to direct his second film! 'Kokaideu Bindaas'. It released in the theaters of Assam in 2019.
His next project was a web series titled 'Trojan', a slow burn crime drama centered around a cyber-attack in Assam. It is streaming on ReelDrama OTT.
Making films is too precious for him and it's not worth the pain if the journey and the film itself don't come naturally from him.
