Christopher Columbus

Trivia

Christopher Columbus

Edit
  • Columbus Day was named after him.
  • Made four voyages to the New World. He never actually saw the mainland of the United States. It's unclear if He went to his grave knowing or not that he discovered a new land different than Asia.
  • People commit the mistake of calling Columbus "Italian". But he was not. Modern Italy did not exist until the 19th century.
  • Columbus day in day United States is celebrated the second Monday in October. In Latin America, is October 12th.
  • Columbus arrived to the New World in October 12th, 1492. However, in the 15th Century, the Julian Calendar was still in usage. Which means, in Gregorian Calendar, the correct date is October 21th, 1492.
  • Genoese by birth. Spaniard by naturalization.
  • Before going to his voyages, he swore loyalty to Spaniard Queen and King, which was the equivalent of naturalization in the 15th Century. Double nationality was not possible, due to the biblical based idea that a person could no served two kings.
  • His name in Spanish was "Cristobal Colón" and that's the way he wrote it down with his own hands in documents that now are regarded as historic.
