Biography

    • Tirrell Vernon Coleman was born on September 16, 1985, in Washington, D.C., and raised by his parents, Willie and Stephanie Coleman. His father, a U.S. Marine Corps veteran, served as a correctional officer at the D.C. Jail before joining the Army Reserves, where he completed two tours of duty in Afghanistan and Iraq. His mother worked in early childhood development, helping shape Tirrell's creativity and discipline from an early age.

Growing up in a military household meant Tirrell moved frequently during his childhood, living in diverse locations such as Camp Lejeune in North Carolina and Honolulu, Hawaii-where his family once had the unique opportunity to meet Miss Hawaii of 1989.

From a young age, Tirrell was captivated by art, video games, comic books, film, and music. His passion for storytelling led him to develop original characters, write stories, and compose songs. A self-taught musician, he learned to sing and play both the keyboard and guitar, eventually writing a catalog of original music.

In 2004, Tirrell graduated from The Jim Henson School of Arts at Northwestern High School in Hyattsville, Maryland. He went on to study Media Arts and Animation at The Art Institute of Washington. During high school, he forged creative partnerships with peers like Matthew Thurmon and Patricia Renderos, collaborators who continue to support his filmmaking journey.

Tirrell's directorial debut came with the 2016 short film A Book by Its Cover, which he wrote, directed, edited, scored, and produced. That same year, he followed up with Split!, a critically recognized short film that earned multiple festival wins and official selections. He is also the founder of Kuroi Entertainment LLC, an independent production company committed to telling original, emotionally driven stories through film, music, and animation.
