'Adult Best Friends' Review: Flawed Yet Fun Female Friends
Image
A seemingly unshakable female friendship is put to the test in director Delaney Buffett’s humorous and surprisingly believable comedy, Adult Best Friends.Buffett shares screenwriting credit with lifelong pal, producer and co-star Katie Corwin (City of Angels). The two met in middle school, in fact; Buffet once said they were spirited 10-year-old girls who “already had their periods.” Bonding instantly, the duo surfed life’s highs and lows together before coming to a crossroads in their early 30s. Tate Taylor To Direct ‘The 17th Annual Coral Gables Christmas Caroling Extravaganza’ For 20th Century And Sugar23
Image
Exclusive: Following his Emmy-nominated work on the Apple series Palm Royale, director Tate Taylor looks to have found his next feature project. Sources tell Deadline that Taylor is set to direct the Sugar23 production The 17th Annual Coral Gables Christmas Caroling Extravaganza at 20th Century.

Annie Mumolo and Stan Chervin rewrote the original script by Connor Hines & Cory Walls. Michael Sugar and Ashley Zalta will produce on behalf of Sugar23.

Plot details are being kept under wraps, but sources say the comedy is in the vein of Pitch Perfect and Bridesmaids. Mumolo is expected to also have a producing role on the new pic, and while not confirmed sources say she may also star as well.

Jillian Kay will executive produce.

The project seems like a perfect transition for Taylor, who just worked with Wiig on the comedy series Palm Royale,...

‘Adult Best Friends’ Review: A Sporadically Funny Comedy About Growing Up and Moving On
Image
If a mid-life crisis happens in one’s fifties, what is a crisis in your thirties called? Perhaps it’s just permanent adolescence. “Adult Best Friends” mines its comedy from the friction caused when one of a pair of best friends moves into adulthood and gets married, while the other remains stuck. Doing double duty as the film’s screenwriters and stars, Katie Corwin and Delaney Buffett craft a believable friendship for their lead characters (also called Katie and Delaney) and write some decent dialogue about why people would or would not marry. Something is missing, however — the film ends up being more dull than hilarious.

Katie and Delaney have been friends since they met at a sleepover in their pre-teens. When Katie’s sweet boyfriend John (Mason Gooding) proposes, she finds it hard to tell her pal. Delaney — who hasn’t ever liked any of Katie’s boyfriends — parties hard,...
