“The Traitors: Karan Johar Anchors An Intriguing Potpourri” – A Subhash K Jha Review
Image
Amazon’s The Traitors is a show where glamorous celebrities who have nothing better to do, the idle rich, so to speak, get together in a ditzy mood at a lavish castle in the middle of the desert to play a game where the slinky contestants are divided into ‘Innocents’ and ‘Traitors’ with one contestant being ‘murdered’ in each episode.

I know what you are thinking. With so many shady crimes of passion happening all around us in real life, this sounds like a reality show licenced to kill, literally.

Banish those sordid thoughts. ‘Murder’ in The Traitor lingo is a euphemism for elimination. For the contestants on this ritzy show being asked to leave is worse than murder. I mean where do these semi-celebrities go after the game is over? How many manicures and tequilas can they take?

I have to confess I didn’t recognize most of the...

Los Angeles, March 10 (Ians) Priyanka Chopra Jonas was the star at a special screening of ‘To Kill A Tiger’, a soul-searing documentary feature by the Indian-Canadian Emmy-winning director Nisha Pahuja in the race for an Oscar, but the spotlight was on Ranjit, a Jharkhand farmer who’s the ‘hero’ of the film.

Web Series Review | Adhura: Complex, layered, gives an immersive experience
Image
We have reached a stage when genres such as horror and suspense thrillers have to be no-holds-barred. Or else, movie and Ott watchers couldn’t care less. Thankfully, though, the streaming platforms don’t seem to be following any diktat regarding self-control or moderation.

Not all of them are watchable, but it feels good to know that to an audience exposed to the best from around the world, at least some bold filmmakers are making all-out efforts to experiment with newer tactics in horror and suspense movies. In this case, web series.

Using state-of-the-art technology for graphics and storylines getting quirkier, many directors no longer follow the staid whodunit formula that made the Ramsays (in)famous in the 1970s.

Also, a series has enough time to develop and follow up on sub-plots, and add an extra dimension to characters for them to look believable.

Produced by Nikkhil Advani’s Emmay Entertainment,...

Know how Paurashpur was shot in just 22 days!
Image
Given the scale, grandeur, and stellar cast of Indian Ott's first epic fictional drama 'Paurashpur', it's hard to fathom how the makers – ALTBalaji, ZEE5, and director Shachindra Vats managed to wrap up the shoot of the magnum opus in just 22 days!

To shoot a period costume drama mounted on such a lavish scale, with heavy VFX, the stellar cast and editing performances were undoubtedly a big challenge for the makers. But as they say, 'all that begins well, ends well', the makers with utmost focus, dedication, and round-the-clock shifts, managed to wrap up the show's shooting schedule in mere 22 days.

The intriguing trailer featuring opulent sets, magnificent backdrop, and vibrant colours, 'Paurashpur' is appreciated to be Indian Ott's first web show featuring heavy VFX, adding up to its popularity.

Director Shachindra Vats explains, "Shooting Paurashpur was certainly a big challenge, especially because we shot the entire show during the lockdown.

Paurashpur: Milind Soman’s ‘nose-ring and bindi’ look is drawing audiences’
Image
In his prolific film career spanning over three decades, Milind Soman has portrayed memorable roles, especially the ones that he thought would allow him to push the envelope as an actor. Similarly, for ALTBalaji and ZEE5's forthcoming magnum opus 'Paurashpur', the talented actor was initially offered the role of the King, which he refused. He eventually agreed to essay the role of a unique character Boris, as seen in the poster and trailer of the epic fictional drama.

For someone who doesn't get convinced easily over a project or a role, Milind informs why exactly he chose to portray a challenging role like Boris, something that an actor would be apprehensive of considering it's look in the show.

Milind informs, "I am a fan of medieval fantasy, and this is the first time that streaming platforms like ALTBalaji and ZEE5 are attempting a medieval fantasy, so I...

Costume designer Leena Daru the soul of Paurashpur – director Shachindra Vats
Image
One of the most striking and challenging tasks to create period dramas, and that too a fictional one like ALTBalaji and ZEE5's magnum opus, Paurashpur is opulent sets and grand costumes to resemble the narrative. The larger-than-life costumes not only complement the larger-than-life narrative, they tell a story of their own – an account of the robust heritage of Indian crafts and textiles.

The magnificent trailer and intriguing character posters of the epic fictional drama Paurashpur left the viewers spellbound. Back were the lavish sets, colourful frames, and drop-dead gorgeous characters. Only this time, the stakes seem to be higher.

Among several aspects of Paurashpur that make it seem loyal to the social and cultural bearings of its narrative are the costumes. Elaborate and intricate, each costume not only harks back to the prevalent crafts but also journeys with the characters themselves. Opulence may characterize every frame, but it is...

Annu Kapoor, Milind Soman, Poulomi Das, Shaheer Sheikh, and Shilpa Shinde in Kaamraj (2020)
The trailer of AltBalaji and ZEE5 show Paurashpur is out. The trailer starts with the introduction of Annu Kapoor’s character Raja Bhadrapratap Singh, a misogynist king who treats women as objects. He marries several women for lust and thinks of them as lesser beings.

We also meet Shilpa Shinde as Queen Meerwati, Milind Soman as transgender Boris and Shaheer Sheikh as Veer Singh in the trailer.

Paurashpur seems to be a bold story, dealing with love, lust, revenge and gender politics. Set against the backdrop of 16th century India, it narrates the story of a kingdom where women have no freedom to make decisions.
