8 True Stories That Inspired Hollywood’s Greatest Biographical Drama
Image
Films have a magical ability to transport us across worlds and time when done right. While fictional tales have their own magic, some stories are so extraordinary, so deeply human, that they deserve to be told on the silver screen.

Such biographical dramas, rooted in real-life events, have the rare power to not only captivate and entertain but also to educate and inspire. These films peel away the layers of history and paint a picture of the triumphs, struggles, and complexities of some of the most remarkable individuals who helped shape the world and occasionally, and made it a better place.

From tales of heroism in the face of unimaginable horrors and adversities to stories of quiet resilience, Hollywood has no shortage of biographical dramas that resonate. Although there are times when the creative flair takes over and adds a bit of dramatic flourish to create a story worthy of cinematic appeal,...

Mubi’s December 2024 Lineup Includes Dahomey, Bird, The People’s Joker & More
Image
Mubi has unveiled next month’s streaming lineup, and it’s a major lineup for new releases, including Mati Diop’s Golden Bear-winning Dahomey (alongside more from the director), Andrea Arnold’s Bird, and Vera Drew’s The People’s Joker. Also in the lineup is the new restoration of Robert Frank and Rudy Wurlitzer’s Candy Mountain, along with films from Steven Soderbergh, Alex Ross Pery, Takashi Miike, and more.

Leonardo Goi said in his Berlinale review of Dahomey, “Dahomey begins where Statues Also Die ended, wondering what remains of our identities when the things those cling onto suddenly disappear––then resurface from oblivion. To this, Diop offers no clear answers. But in the heart-shaking passion of that university debate, in those students’ resolute commitment to reappropriate their own narratives, she finds something rarer still: a snapshot of a generation for whom this isn’t just the story of a restitution.

With ‘Feud’ Now on FX, Revisit a Great Truman Capote Movie — but Not the One You’re Thinking of
Image
In 2006, a movie came out starring Daniel Craig, Sandra Bullock, Sigourney Weaver, Jeff Daniels, Hope Davis, Isabella Rossellini, Peter Bogdanovich, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Toby Jones. That’s a murderer’s row of talent bringing to life writer/director Douglas McGrath’s script — and very few people paid it much mind. But “Infamous” was a victim of bad timing, not bad filmmaking.

One can’t blame audiences for greeting it with a collective shrug. McGrath’s movie tackled the exact same topic as the previous year’s “Capote” (the movie that earned Philip Seymour Hoffman his first and only Oscar): Truman Capote’s time spent researching and writing his true-crime classic “In Cold Blood.” After the buzzy release of “Capote” and months spent in awards season campaigning mode, no one was ready to revisit the subject.

What a shame, because “Infamous” restores much of what was missing from Bennett Miller...

‘Feud: Capote vs. The Swans’ Review: Naomi Watts Leads Stellar Cast in Ryan Murphy’s Otherwise Spotty Anthology
Image
Although Feud: Capote vs. The Swans is only the second installment of Ryan Murphy’s Feud franchise — Bette and Joan aired way back in 2017 — the anthology’s core seems clear enough. To qualify as a Feud season, the focus must be on a rivalry of little to no cosmic importance that’s somehow integral to the very essence of the people involved. It must exist as nothing and everything all at once.

Capote vs. The Swans creator Jon Robin Baitz understands the general assignment. In focusing on the society kerfuffle between Truman Capote and some of the most powerful women of New York’s upper crust, Baitz has a clash that’s entirely inconsequential and yet cataclysmic within its milieu. Unfortunately, a jumbled approach to time and a limited understanding of character make it a story without momentum.

Capote vs. The Swans is eight hours of exceptional performances and interesting formal ideas,...

‘Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans’ Trailer: Truman Capote Betrays Confidantes in Twisted Anthology
Image
Ryan Murphy’s “Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans” shatters the social hierarchy of 1960s elite New York, one betrayal at a time.

Season 2 of the anthology series centers on acclaimed writer Truman Capote (Tom Hollander), once a confidante to society’s most elite women, whom he nicknamed “the swans.” However, his act of betrayal effectively destroyed those relationships, banished him from high society and sent him into a spiral of self-destruction from which he would ultimately never recover.

Per the official synopsis, “Enchanted and captivated by these doyennes, Capote ingratiated himself into their lives, befriending them and becoming their confidante, only to ultimately betray them by writing a thinly veiled fictionalization of their lives, exposing their most intimate secrets. When an excerpt from the book, Answered Prayers, Capote’s planned magnum opus, was published in Esquire, it effectively destroyed his relationship with his swans, banished him from the high society...

Feud: Capote Vs. The Swans is based on the bestselling book Capote’s Women: A True Story of Love, Betrayal, and a Swan Song for an Era by Laurence Leamer. Jack Dunphy
Watch: Jack Dunphy's Awkward Hand-Drawn Short Doc 'Brontosaurus'
Jack Dunphy
"I've never felt so connected to someone in my life." These can be dangerous words! This strange, awkward animated short film is a very personal tale about a short-lived relationship. Brontosaurus is a short film made by filmmaker Jack Dunphy, and it first premiered last year at various festivals including True/False, Nashville, Philadelphia, and Cucalorus. "A tale of lust, eating disorders, crossing boundaries, and tiny toy dinosaurs." It's an intimate short doc featuring hand-drawn animation to tell a story of, uh, why you don't sleep with your assistant. Dunphy adds via Ig: "It's been a long and winding road with this one, so I'm glad people are finally seeing it." While the style is a bit rough, and entirely unflattering, it goes right along the story and captures his depressed attitude. I hope he finishes his other film one day! In the meantime, this isn't the most uplifting short...

‘Assholes’ Blu-ray Review (Vinegar Syndrome / Circle Collective)
Image
Stars: Peter Vack, Betsey Brown, Jack Dunphy, Eileen Dietz, Jane Brown, Ron Brown, Richard Mark Jordan, Patrick Labella, James Augustus Lee, Catherine Bo-Eun Song | Written and Directed by Peter Vack

Seemingly inspired by mumblecore filmmaking, Assholes actually plays out more like Troma’s take on the Brian Yuzna film Society, and under their auspices would have been titled something like “Attack of the Killer Assholes” or “New York Assholes Must Die.”

The story centres around three self-absorbed twenty-somethings coping with mumblecore ennui through drugs, therapy and family dinners. Adam, played by writer/director Peter Vack, is too busy getting stoned to pay attention to the fact that his now-sober sister, Adah, desperately wants his attention, and their parents’ attention, or anyone’s sexual attention – as she tells her analyst. Desperately horny, she hooks up with Adam’s best friend, Aaron (Jack Dunphy), whose anal obsession literally plumbs new depths of perversion.

‘Truman & Tennessee’ Review: An Immersive Portrait of Literary Icons, Friends, and Rivals
Image
Historical documentaries pose a unique challenge when it comes to dramatizing lives rarely captured on film. When it comes to literary figures, there’s no shortage of written records — whether by them or about them — to communicate the essence of a writer’s life. In the case of the new documentary “Truman & Tennessee: An Intimate Conversation,” filmmaker Lisa Immordino Vreeland utilizes correspondence between the two monumental figures as well as public comments each made about the other to weave her tale. While the result is visually wooden, the friendship, rivalry, and musings on art and life in “Truman & Tennessee” coalesce into

Described in its opening shots as “an encounter between those lifelong friends in their own words,” “Truman & Tennessee” charts the parallel careers of Truman Capote and Tennessee Williams, contemporaries with similar backgrounds who faced many of the same personal and professional struggles. The film plays like a kind of...

Hollywood Takes Slap Shot On ‘The Trashers’, About Most Penalized Team In Hockey History And 17 Year-Old President
Exclusive: Yellow Bear Films has acquired a script from Adam Perlman (Billions) based on the Sports Illustrated article “This Hockey Mogul Was 17. Got a Problem With That?” which was reported by Jon Wertheim.

The project is being produced by Tom McNulty (Date Night) through his MC² banner. No director is attached yet. It’s being described as Slap Shot meets Superbad.

The story is about the Danbury Trashers which was considered the most violent team in professional sports. The minor league hockey team accumulated more penalty minutes in one season than any other team before or since, but they also had the best record in the league. At their helm and president/Gm of the club was a 17-year-old kid named Aj Galante who was put in charge of the team by his father, the local king of waste management.

It follows Galante from mastering the moneyball of violence to...

Tribeca 2018 Poster Debut: Nathan Silver's The Great Pretender Will Make You Believe
If you are a long time reader of these here pages, then you may very well already be aware of my love for the cinematic works of Nathan Silver. Working under the mode of roughly a movie a year, Silver has offered some of the finest indie fare of this past decade. From at-home care drama Exit Elena, to the introspective Uncertain Terms, the tumultuous Stinking Heaven and the manic Thirst Street, Silver perfectly encapsulates the wild mood swings of early 21st century American Living like few other filmmakers of his generation. Reuniting with his Thirst Street co-star Esther Garrel, Silver has also teamed up with writer Jack Dunphy, and actress Maëlle Poesy for the NYC theater scene fuck-up The Great Pretender. Now, while I am...

Assholes (2017)
‘Assholes’ Director Peter Vack Made the Most Disgusting Movie Ever With ‘Recycled Amazon Money’
Assholes (2017)
When Peter Vack scored a role over the summer playing Lola Kirke’s boyfriend on the Amazon series “Mozart in the Jungle,” he used the money to direct his first feature. The actor had scored in dozens of low-budget projects and directed a short film a few years earlier, but he had reason to believe nobody else was going to back his feature-length debut.

“Just imagine the first sentence of the pitch,” said Vack, over lunch at Soho House. “‘It’s about two people who share an anal fetish, and I’m thinking of my sister to play the lead.’ I knew this particular endeavor was not something I’d be able to find investors for.”

The movie, by the way, was called “Assholes.” It premiered at the SXSW Film Festival, where it won the inaugural Adam Yauch Hornblower Award (a prize reserved for unique filmmaking visions); it also jolted audiences and critics alike,...

ShortList 2017: ‘Chekhov’ Is Real, Hyper-Personal Film (Video)
Jack Dunphy
For Jack Dunphy, making movies about his life is a way to sort things out. Film is an autobiographic medium that allows him, he says, to revisit tough memories and recreate them with a variety of visual styles. One such memory can be seen in “Chekhov,” an entry at TheWrap’s ShortList Film Festival, presented with support from IMAX. It is comprised of two simple elements: footage of Dunphy’s ex-girlfriend Fiona, and a secretly-recorded phone call he made to his sister, Ruby. Dunphy says he decided to make the film spontaneously after an encounter with Fiona after their break-up that left him.
