Robert Eggers Wants to Resurrect the (Un)dead

Robert Eggers likes to go in cold. “In theory, I don’t care for this,” the soft-spoken 41-year-old filmmaker says, glancing around the hotel room he’s sitting in. “If I see a trailer for a movie made by a director I’m a fan of, or someone tells me about an obscure movie I might like then goes to pull up a clip, I’m like, ‘Turn it off.’ I don’t want to know anything about it. I just want to watch the movie. This shit we’re doing here,...

10 Best Historical Fantasy Movies, Ranked
Image
Among the best fantasy movies of all time are those that blend fantasy with historical fiction. Many works of fantasy are inspired by historical events and texts, drawing upon real conflict to make works of fiction more applicable to real-world discourses. However, fantasy stories set in a real historical context can be especially satisfying, encouraging audiences to delve into the history that is entwined with magicians and monsters.

This selection of movies also demonstrates some overlap with the best animated fantasy movies ever and claims several of the best fantasy movie performances in history. For a long time, fantasy struggled to compete with other "more serious" genres; history imbued it with some legitimacy. Long after fantasy and sci-fi have become the reigning genres of pop culture, the fantasy-history combination still holds potential when it has produced many great, educating movies.

'Faithless' Frida Gustavsson Calls the Ingmar Bergman Adaptation Perilous
Image
A story of marriage, infidelity, and the emotional turmoil that gradually follows suit, Faithless is a raw, atmospheric take on the Liv Ullman and Ingmar Bergman classic. A story that has been stretched across time, the adaptation stays true to its roots. Marianne (Frida Gustavsson) is happily married to Markus (August Wittgenstein), but things get complicated when Markus best friend, David (Gustav Lindh), comes to stay for the summer. What starts as a spark between Marianna and David turns into a dramatic affair that changes the course of their lives forever. Forty years later, an older David (Jesper Christensen) and Marianne (Lena Endre) reconnect, still dealing with the consequences of their actions.

Tomas Alfredson Stands by Decision to Turn Bergman-Penned ‘Faithless’ Into Series: ‘It Would Be Different if I Remade “The Seventh Seal”’
Image
Some people claim you can’t touch anything Ingmar Bergman was involved in. Tomas Alfredson is not one of these people.

“Not everything Bergman did was genius, but a lot of it was,” he tells Variety. Swedish director is behind new series “Faithless,” premiering in Toronto and based on the 2000 film directed by Liv Ullman and written by Bergman himself.

“This is his most autobiographical work. Ever. He started writing it several times and couldn’t finish, because he was so tormented by guilt. There was something in this material I felt could tackle in a different way. It would be different if I remade ‘The Seventh Seal’ or ‘Fanny and Alexander,’ but this? It was open for reinterpretation.”

Alfredson, of “Let the Right One In” and “Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy” fame, made a show that’s “very free from the original,” he underlines. Even though Lena Endre returns to the role of Marianne,...

Tomas Alfredson on Remaking Ingmar Bergman’s Steamy Infidelity Drama ‘Faithless’ as a TV Series
Image
The story of Faithless, the new six-part TV series from director Tomas Alfredson (Let the Right One In, Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy) is familiar to European arthouse fans. Renowned director David Howard, 73, is reunited with the great love of his life, the actress Marianne Vogler, 75, and forced to reflect on the painful consequences of their affair decades earlier when Marianne was married to David’s best friend, Markus. In 2000, actress-director Liv Ullmann (Cries and Whispers), muse and frequent collaborator to the legendary Swedish director Ingmar Bergman (The Seventh Seal), adapted the story from Bergman’s previously unproduced screenplay. The tale of lust, adultery, and the damage wrought by desire, premiered in Cannes and has been hailed as a modern-day classic.

For his limited series adaptation, Alfredson teamed with screenwriter Sara Johnsen (July 22) to reexamine and expand Ullmann and Bergman’s original story. The basics of the plot are the same.

Tomas Alfredson & Sara Johnsen On Adapting Ingmar Bergman’s ‘Faithless’ & Why TV Is A Much “Freer Art Form” For Creatives – London TV Screenings
Image
Exclusive: Swedish filmmaker Tomas Alfredson, now best known as the director behind beautiful, taut features like Let the Right One In and Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy, wrote to Swedish screen legend Ingmar Bergman sometime in the early 2000s with an idea. Bergman’s response was characteristically colorful.

“What the hell is this? What do you mean?” Bergman told Alfredson.

Alfredson had told the Persona filmmaker that he wanted to remake Faithless, the 2000 feature Bergman had written about an imaginary woman who recollects her painful experience of adultery to an aging filmmaker. The pic played in competition that year in Cannes and was directed by Bergman’s ex-wife, actress Liv Ullmann.

“This was long before everyone was producing remakes, so it was a very unusual question, especially for Bergman,” Alfredson said.

Fast forward to February 2024 and Alfredson is deep into an edit of a contemporary TV adaptation of Faithless he has...

The Promised Land Review | A Classic Historical Epic with Mads Mikkelsen's Swagger
Image
The Promised Land is a Danish film that feels more epic than most Hollywood blockbusters, with its vast landscapes, romantic subplots, and swaggering hero. The film explores 18th century Denmark during the transition from feudalism to capitalism, focusing on a retired soldier's attempt to cultivate uninhabitable land using the potato. Mads Mikkelsen delivers a superb performance as the stubborn and ambitious Captain Kahlen, while Simon Bennebjerg shines as the villainous magistrate who opposes him.

Hollywood blockbusters may be getting longer (or perhaps bloated), but that doesn't mean there have been many great epics in recent years. Just because a Marvel or Mission: Impossible film is 150 minutes long, it isn't necessarily an epic. The Promised Land, a new Danish film by filmmaker Nikolaj Arcel, is only 127 minutes, but feels more epic in scope than most big studio pictures today. With its stubborn hero, vast landscapes, large supporting cast, dreamily romantic subplots,...

Two of their biggest challenges this year – hosting an industry showcase for 700-plus international delegates in a brand-new venue, the Clarion Hotel Draken, and lifting the Nordic industry’s moral by the crisis in the drama sector – had been successfully met. Variety drills down on how and why:

All-Time Record Attendees

As many as 2,029 accredited delegates registered for the festival and industry showcases at the 47th Göteborg Film Festival, and parallel TV and film markets, the largest in the Nordic region. “We’ve never hit this silver line,” said Kullengård. The Promised Land Director Nikolaj Arcel Discusses Mads Mikkelsen's Return to Denmark
Image
Nikolaj Arcel and Mads Mikkelsen had similar trajectories on the international film scene, both beginning in their native Denmark. Mikkelsen made a name for himself with several Danish masterpieces from the directors Susanne Bier and Nicolas Winding Refn before heading to Hollywood and mastering a kind of intelligent and enigmatic villain. It's his Danish films, however, that remain his greatest work, from After the Wedding to The Hunt and Another Round.

Count A Royal Affair among them, as well. Directed by Nikolaj Arcel, the film found the two Danes developing a friendship and strong working relationship. Arcel himself would head to Hollywood and become attached to a giant blockbuster of his own, directing Idris Elba and Matthew McConaughey in The Dark Tower. Seven years after they worked together, Arcel and Mikkelsen were both yearning for home, and have now collaborated on a grand historical epic, The Promised Land, based on...

Mads Mikkelsen at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
The Promised Land Review: Mads Mikkelsen Tames the Untamable in Tale of Frontier Survival
Mads Mikkelsen at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
Glowering from atop his mountainous cheekbones, Mads Mikkelsen cuts a hard, intimidating figure in the The Promised Land. Directed by Nikolaj Arcel from a screenplay co-written by the prolific Anders Thomas Jensen, the film casts Mikkelsen as real-life 18-century war veteran Ludvig Kahlen, a proud man of humble origins who hopes to establish the first viable homestead in Denmark’s Jutland heath. Many others have tried to cultivate the barren lowland in the name of the king, but none have succeeded. “The world’s asshole,” one man calls this no man’s land roamed by outlaws and outcasts. One look into Kahlen’s eyes is to know that he’ll succeed at transforming the heath into farmable land.

In large part for the way it paints morality in black and white, The Promised Land is an old-fashioned western, and what it lacks in nuance it more than makes up for in showmanship.

‘The Promised Land’ Gives Mads Mikkelsen the Big, Bloody Epic He Deserves
Image
You do not fuck with Mads Mikkelsen.

There are a number of takeaways to be had from The Promised Land, the excellent prestige drama-cum-bloody payback flick straight outta Denmark. The rich in 18th century Scandinavia were as entitled, immoral, and sociopathic as they are in 21st century everywhere. Just because you’ve fought for a country doesn’t mean it will give you a fair shake. Few things fill a big screen better than a grand, historical epic brimming with sweeping vistas, action-packed set pieces, and heroic men and women fighting for love,...

Mads Mikkelsen stars in trailer for ‘The Promised Land’
Mads Mikkelsen at an event for The 79th Annual Academy Awards (2007)
Magnolia Pictures has revealed the trailer for the Mads Mikkelsen-led drama ‘The Promised Land.’

In 18th century Denmark, Captain Ludvig Kahlen (Mads Mikkelsen) – a proud, ambitious, but impoverished war hero – sets out to tame a vast, uninhabitable land on which seemingly nothing can grow. He seeks to start farming crops, build a colony in the name of the King, and gain a noble title for himself.

This beautiful but forbidding area is also under the rule of the merciless Frederik De Schinkel, a preening nobleman who realises the threat Kahlen represents to his power. As this group of misfits begins to build a small community in this inhospitable place, De Schinkel swears vengeance, and the confrontation between him and Kahlen promises to be as violent and intense as these two men.

Icon Takes Mads Mikkelsen’s ‘The Promised Land’ for U.K.
Image
Icon Film Distribution has picked up The Promised Land, the Danish period drama starring Mads Mikkelsen for the U.K.

The Nordic Western sees Mikkelsen reteam with Nikolaj Arcel, the director of 2012’s A Royal Affair, a steamy period piece that scored an Oscar nomination for best international feature and launched the career of co-star Alicia Vikander.

Mikkelsen stars as Captain Kahlen, an 18th-century soldier who struggled, against all odds, to cultivate the barren Jutland heath and start a settlement there. But a local landowner, Frederik De Schinkel (Simon Bennebjerg) is determined to stop him, fearing the arrival of settlers will weaken his position as lord of the realm. The Promised Land is based on Ida Jessen’s Danish best-seller The Captain and Ann Barbara and was inspired by real events, though the book and film are fiction. Amanda Collin and Gustav Lindh co-star.

The Promised Land premiered in competition at the Venice Film Festival.

‘The Promised Land’ Review: Mads Mikkelsen At His Staunch, Heroic Best In Nikolaj Arcel’s Classic Drama About Human Frailty – Venice Film Festival
Image
They don’t make them like this any more, except when they do. Bastarden (disappointingly renamed The Promised Land in English) is a historical epic out of Denmark that has all the virtues of a midday movie remembered from childhood, the kind of thing you watched when your mother kept you home with a bad cold: a setting sometime in the olden days, a lawless frontier, sword fights and a gaggle of delectably evil baddies. Those seamy aristocrats and their henchmen, given to torturing, murdering and raping their oppressed tenants, are just lining up to have the tables turned, giving them a rich dose of their own torturing, murdering medicine. Hooray!

Better still, The Promised Land has one element those midday movies missed, simply because of the time they were made: Mads Mikkelsen. Mads as Ludwig Kahlen, soldier settler in some of the most inhospitable country on Earth, is at his staunch,...

"But the sole ruler of the area, the merciless 'Frederik de Schinkel', arrogantly believes this land belongs to him. When de Schinkel learns the maid 'Ann Barbara' and her servant husband have escaped for refuge with Kahlen, the privileged, spiteful ruler swears revenge, doing everything in his power to drive the captain away.

The Bastard: Everything We Know So Far About The Historical Epic Starring Mads Mikkelsen
Image
Dark, violent historical epics have a special place in my heart, and the upcoming Mads Mikkelsen film "The Bastard" looks like it will be period-piece perfection. The film, which stars Mikkelsen as a 17th-century soldier charged with taking over a large swath of land for the king of Denmark, looks like the kind of movie that belongs alongside "The Northman" or "Valhalla Rising," which also starred Mikkelsen. The upcoming Danish-language film is still in production, so there aren't many marketing materials to share just yet. Thankfully, there are at least some great behind-the-scenes stills shared by the production company behind "The Bastard," Zentropa.

While it's still early, there are some interesting details available about the film, including the premise, possible release window, and more about the cast and crew. Here's everything we know so far about this moody-looking cinematic slice of Scandinavian history.

When And Where To Watch The Bastard

According to Zentropa's press release,...
