Ridley Season 2 is finally, officially set to premiere in the UK on Saturday, August 10 at 8pm on ITV1, with all episodes dropping as a box set on Itvx the same day. The acclaimed British drama, starring Adrian Dunbar and Bronagh Waugh, continues the story of retired detective Alex Ridley as he returns to the force to solve high-stakes cases while confronting his own emotional scars. The show was a quiet sensation when it debuted in 2022, garnering praise for its sensitive storytelling, atmospheric setting, and Dunbar’s grounded lead performance. Season 2 has already aired in the U.S., but this marks its long-awaited return to UK screens. Also returning are Terence Maynard as Dci Paul Goodwin, Georgie Glen as Dr. Wendy Newstone, and George Bukhari as DC Darren Lakhan.

Starring Nick Frost, Black Cab is a tense, slow-burning psychological thriller that caught me off guard in the best way. Going in, I had certain expectations based on Frost’s previous filmography which blended comedy And horror (for the most part), but what I got instead was a brooding, atmospheric deep-dive into paranoia, guilt, and the quiet madness of isolation. It’s one of those films that lingers long after the credits roll, and not necessarily because of any grand spectacle, it’s more about mood, subtlety, and performance.

Black Cab follows Anne and Patrick, an estranged couple who are trying, awkwardly, to reconnect during a night out in London. After a few drinks and some emotional tension, they hail a black cab to head home. That’s when everything starts to unravel.

Though the narrative goes the long way round, there are plenty of strong performances and good ideas to keep this journey interesting

Although this British horror flick gets a little muddy in strictly narrative terms with its tricky shifts in viewpoint, it’s rich enough in ideas and strong performances as well as running a blessedly crisp 88 minutes, that any flaws are easily forgiven. The story starts with Anne waking from a frightening dream and going to join her boyfriend Patrick (Luke Norris) for dinner with another couple, Ryan (George Bukhari) and Jessica (Tessa Parr). The snappy banter between the foursome, which instantly and economically establishes that Patrick is an outright asshole who doesn’t deserve quiet, circumspect Anne, suddenly chills when it’s revealed the two are engaged. Jessica, for one, doesn’t approve, for reasons only revealed later.

Nevertheless, Anne and Patrick depart in the titular vehicle, driven by excessively chatty Ian.

The road from comedy to horror is a short one for Black Cab lead Nick Frost, yet unlike past roles, this new one isn’t played for laughs. The Shaun of the Dead star is dead serious as his character, a crazed cabbie, takes two unsuspecting passengers on a nightmarish ride. The hellish route in Bruce Goodison’s movie starts off straightforwardly, however, an eerie element soon closes in on the cast and alters the course.

Things are clearly not good between Anne and Patrick (George Bukhari), and the tension between the couple becomes less and less underlying as the movie progresses. And once Frost enters the picture, that relationship drama briefly takes a backseat to the more pressing problem at hand. After a bad night out, Anne and Patrick hail the cab that carries them off to a creepy and possibly haunted English road.

Frost is best known for his work co-leading the Three Flavours Cornetto Trilogy with Simon Pegg, while also finding success with everything from 2011's Attack the Block to his and Pegg's sci-fi comedy Paul, AMC's Into the Badlands and Fighting with My Family.
