X-Men Is Giving Its Strongest Hero a New Codename, Making a Huge Change to Xavier's Son
Image
Warning: Spoilers for Ultimate Wolverine #6 and Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga #1!The X-Men franchise changes Legion forever by giving him not one, but two new codenames for two different universes: One and The Phoenix. In the latter case, readers and critics have referred to the latest version of Professor X's son simply as Evil Legion, with David Haller dead and his collective of alters operating without him. The X-Men franchise now simplifies the notion, whilst paving their path to heroism.

Giant-Size Dark Phoenix Saga #1 rechristens Legion as The Phoenix, while the X-Men villain is referred to more simply as The One in Ultimate Wolverine #6. Giant-Size Phoenix #1 picks up where Giant-Size X-Men #1 left off, with the new identity rebranding Legion and tying him to Jean Grey's ultimate hero form.

Speaking of ultimate, the Ultimate Universe renders David Haller strictly into a digital entity rather than the Omega-level mutant that he has always been.

Sorry, Batman But DC Comics' Most Tragic Backstory Belongs to a Green Lantern Ally and Here's Why
Image
The tragedy that Batman went through is what inspired him to eventually become a superhero, and it's been a major part of his character for the majority of his history - but it doesn't even hold a candle to the tragedy experienced by one Green Lantern ally. While witnessing his parents murdered is certainly a tragic backstory for Bruce Wayne, it pales in comparison to the backstory of Blue Lantern Saint Walker.

Batman's backstory is well-known; even people who don't read comic books are familiar with what happened to him. Bruce Wayne grew up in great fortune and was incredibly lucky. Not only did he have the wealth to pursue any interest, but he also had a loving family that truly cared about him. It seemed like he was set to have an incredible and perfect life.

But as even non-comic book readers know, this perfect life was shattered due...

The Blue Lanterns Are the Most Important Heroes in the DC Universe, And I Can't Wait for the Dcu Movies to Prove It to the Entire World
Image
DC Comics' Blue Lanterns carry an essential superhero theme that sets DC apart from other publishers: hope. Ever since Green Lantern lore expanded to include the full range of the rainbow and the entire emotional spectrum, DC has added a piece of its own identity in a seemingly small corner of its comic universe.

While it's often joked that DC is darker than what reader might expect superhero comics to be, hope shines in the darkness, and that's why the Blue Lantern Corps means so much to me as a reader. Green Lanterns still take the lead in many of DC's comics, and while willpower is vitally important to the battles that these DC heroes find themselves in, I have seen time and again that there is no willpower without hope.

Often lost in the background, the Blue Lantern Corps is like a support team in the fight and the medics of the battlefield.

Deadpool & Wolverine's Messy Logan Co-Creator Credit Controversy, Explained
Image
2024 marks the 50th anniversary of Wolverine's creation and debut in 1974's "The Incredible Hulk" issue #180. For most of that time, it's been accepted that Wolverine was created by writer Len Wein and artist John Romita Sr. However, Roy Thomas — who was Marvel Comics' editor-in-chief in 1974 — has recently (since Wein's death in 2017) been claiming he should be credited as a co-creator of Wolverine as well. Marvel has obliged him.

The credits of "Deadpool & Wolverine" included the following accreditation: "Wolverine created by Len Wein, John Romita Sr., Herb Trimpe, and Roy Thomas." Thomas subsequently wrote an op-ed in The Hollywood Reporter about finally receiving credit as a creator of Wolverine in a film. The headline quote? "My Name Should Have Come First."

Wein's widow, Christine Valada, has been a vocal opponent of Thomas staking this claim on Logan. (Thomas is the only one of Wolverine's four credited creators who is still alive.

The 10 Best Marvel Comics From The X-Men's Krakoa Era, Ranked
Image
The X-Men's newest comics, "From The Ashes," look to be banking on the 90s nostalgia that made the recent "X-Men '97" revival such a success. This safe approach, though, comes off (and undoes) one of the most experimental periods in "X-Men" comics ever: the Krakoa era.

"X-Men" has a premise that could be a straightforward science-fiction story, no capes needed, but most of their stories lean more on soapy interpersonal drama than big ideas. Krakoa titled that balance in the other direction. This new dawn for X-Mankind kicked off in 2019 with interlocking miniseries "House of X" and "Powers of X" and concluded in 2024.

"Krakoa" is the name of a South-Pacific island where Professor X, Magneto, and Moira MacTaggert create a homeland for all mutants (even the bad guys). Mutants proclaim themselves the next step in human evolution and now that they're one people, they prove that by outpacing human achievement.

One Major Justice League Character Was Never Meant To Exist

A staple member of the Justice League has always been Green Lantern, whether it be Hal Jordan, John Stewart, or Kyle Rayner but one Crisis-level event revealed the surprising fact that Kyle Rayner was apparently never meant to exist at all. With the collapse of the Multiverse, Kyle Rayner found himself on a planet he didn't belong on.

Kyle Rayne's multiversal origin was confirmed in Infinite Crisis #5 by Geoff Johns and Phil Jimenez. In this issue of the essential event series, as Alexander Luthor is building a machine to help him rearrange the multiverse, he mentions that each person he's strapped to the machine was originally meant to be from another universe.

Iron Man's Next 'Civil War' Is Against the 1 MCU Hero More Personal Than Captain America
Image
Get ready for an intense showdown between Iron Man and War Machine. Their friendship will be put to the ultimate test. War Machine has endured imprisonment to protect Tony Stark. His frustration will lead to a fierce battle. The upcoming conflict between War Machine and Iron Man will be personal, drawing parallels to the iconic Civil War storyline.

The worst of Marvel's Civil War is nothing compared to what Iron Man is about to endure at the hands of his best friend. In both the original comics iteration and the MCU adaptation, Civil War pitted Iron Man against Captain America in a battle of differing philosophies and enormous egos. While the feud between the two Avengers stalwarts was heated, it still wasn't as heated as it would have been had they been closer as friends.

That's why the prospect of an Iron Man vs. War Machine feud is so enticing,...

Star Wars Just Introduced a Grotesque New Take on Its 'Severed Arms' Motif

Wonder Woman Exposed Her Hidden Dark Side with 1 Sentence
Image
Wonder Woman's traditional stereotype as a strong yet gracious warrior is not entirely accurate - she has always had a dark side. Wonder Woman is willing to kill villains if it means saving lives, as she believes it is her duty as a hero. While she believes in the rule of law, Wonder Woman has her own ways of permanently dealing with criminals who are too powerful for the justice system.

While Wonder Woman is commonly depicted as DC's hard-hitting warrior with an immaculate sense of compassion, there's a limit to the traditional wholesomeness she usually brings to a fight. After centuries of fighting on the frontline to protect the values of truth and justice, she's more than willing to end a fight — permanently.

The limits of Wonder Woman's tolerance are on display in Justice League #22 by Geoff Johns, Ivan Reis, Oclair Albert, Joe Prado, and Rod Reis, in which the Justice League,...

Marvel has just revealed the identity of the new Punisher taking over from Frank Castle, and it's a move no-one saw coming. In the 'Marvel: Heroes, Hulks, and Super-Soldiers' panel at San Diego Comic-Com, Marvel named the new hero after teasing a replacement for Frank a few days ago.

The new Punisher is officially Joe Garrison - a retired Shield black-ops agent who is taking on the Punisher mantle. While many fans had expected a pre-existing character to take over as the new Punisher, Marvel is instead introducing Joe as a new face - one who has the training and ruthlessness to replace Frank. Joe will star in a new Punisher series from David Pepose and Dave Wachter, with awesome covers provided by Rod Reis. Reis' cover images show Joe in an inverted version of Frank Castle's classic costume, and wielding futuristic weaponry. However, despite the new equipment, it's clear...

X-Men Fixes Its Oldest Mistake In One Triumphant Moment
Image
This article contains spoilers for Dark Web: X-Men #3!Marvel Comics has finally fixed one of its biggest X-Men mistakes, centered around Jean Grey's (first) resurrection. Death has always been something of a revolving door in comics, and that's particularly true for the X-Men franchise - even before the mutants learned to synergize their powers with Cerebro technology to create 'Mutant Resurrection.' Jean Grey was the trend-setter, sacrificing her life in the classic 'Dark Phoenix Saga' but resurrected and later reunited with the original X-Men as a member of X-Factor. While Jean's return was surely inevitable, Marvel didn't exactly handle it well.

The problem came from an editorial decision. Marvel wanted the original five X-Men back together again, including the resurrected Jean - but Cyclops had retired, and started a family with a woman named Madelyne Pryor. Legendary X-Men scribe Chris Claremont intended Madelyne to be Cyclops' "Happily Ever After,...
