Totally Killer's Time-Traveling Slasher Story Was Already Done In A Cult Horror Hit 8 Years Ago
Image
Totally Killer is a time-traveling slasher story that pays homage to 1980s slashers and features a teen protagonist trying to save her mom from a killer. The movie's unique twist involves the protagonist accidentally traveling back in time to 1987 and teaming up with her teenage mom and her friends to thwart the Sweet 16 Killer. The Final Girls, a cult horror hit from 2015, has a similar premise where a teen is transported into a slasher movie and teams up with her deceased mother's character, exploring slasher tropes in novel ways. Both films make for a perfect horror-comedy double feature.

The time-traveling slasher story of Totally Killer has already played out in another comedy-horror flick that debuted eight years ago. Directed by Nahnatchka Khan, the filmmaker behind Ali Wong's 2019 Netflix hit Always Be My Maybe, and produced under the Blumhouse Television banner, Totally Killer is a straight-to-streaming riff on 1980s slashers.

Kiernan Shipka in Totally Killer (2023)
The time travel slasher comedy Totally Killer is scheduled to begin streaming on Amazon’s Prime Video on October 6th, but today, one week out from the release, the marketing department has unveiled a clip from the film that I would have deemed too much of a Spoiler to show off. This scene shows the masked murderer know as the Sweet 16 Killer crossing paths with Liana Liberato from Scream VI, but if you don’t want to know how that encounter turns out, avert your eyes.

Nahnatchka Khan (Always Be My Maybe) directed Totally Killer from a screenplay by Hocus Pocus 2 writer Jen D’Angelo, based on an original script by David Matalon (The Clearing) and Sasha Perl-Raver (Let’s Get Merried). The story follows Jamie (Kiernan Shipka) whose mom, Pam, is terrorized by the resurgence of the Sweet Sixteen...

The Totally Killer Trailer Puts Sabrina's Kiernan Shipka In A Time Traveling Slasher Movie
Image
It's tough to imagine a more challenging job these days than to come up with an original, high-concept movie involving time travel. For one thing, the industry is pretty much drowning in scripts relying on this tried-and-true gimmick, making it that much more difficult to separate oneself from the rest of the pack. For another, any project will be doomed from the start with comparisons to all-time classics like "Back to the Future," "Groundhog Day," and more. So what's a filmmaker to do? The trailer for the upcoming Prime Video and Blumhouse movie, "Totally Killer," suggests one possible approach: embrace the high expectations, fully lean into the self-aware humor, and go as far as the clever script and killer cast will take you.

In what can only be described as "Back to the Future" meets "The Final Girls" with a pinch of "Happy Death Day," the premise of "Totally Killer...

Totally Killer sounds quite a bit like the brilliant slasher-comedy The Final Girls, similarly transporting characters back in time and putting them inside of a classic 80s slasher setup.

The film is a continuation of the deal forged by Blumhouse and Amazon Studios in 2019 and will star Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Mad Men), Olivia Holt (Cruel Summer), Julie Bowen (Modern Family, Life of the Party), and Randall Park (Always Be My Maybe, Fresh off the Boat). Totally Killer is an upcoming time-traveling slasher film directed by Nahnatchka Khan, who previously helmed Always Be My Maybe and Ali Wong: Don Wong. Kiernan Shipka, Julie Bowen, and Olivia Holt will star in the movie. Blumhouse and Amazon Studios will produce Totally Killer to continue a deal between the two studios in 2019.

"With Nahnatchka's vision and the exciting cast led by Kiernan Shipka and Olivia Holt, we are confident Totally Killer will resonate with our audience around the world. We could not be more thrilled to watch this story come to life and to continue our longstanding collaboration with the incredible team at Blumhouse," said Julie Rapaport, head of movies at Amazon Studios.

Here's a plot synopsis courtesy of Bloody Disgusting.

"The film follows Jamie (Shipka), whose mom, Pam (Bowen), is terrorized by the resurgence of the Sweet Sixteen Killer—a masked maniac that slaughtered a group of teenage girls in the '80s.

Totally Killer: Kiernan Shipka, Olivia Holt time travel slasher earns R rating
Kiernan Shipka
Thirteen months ago, we learned that Kiernan Shipka (Chilling Adventures of Sabrina) and Olivia Holt (Cruel Summer) had signed on to star in the time travel slasher Totally Killer for Blumhouse. Now the Motion Picture Association has confirmed that their ratings board has given Totally Killer an R rating for “bloody violence, language, sexual material, and teen drug/alcohol use“… which is pretty much what I would expect to see in a slasher.

Nahnatchka Khan (Always Be My Maybe) directed the film from a screenplay by Hocus Pocus 2 writer Jen D’Angelo, based on an original script by David Matalon (The Clearing) and Sasha Perl-Raver (Let’s Get Merried). The story follows Jamie (Shipka) whose mom, Pam, is terrorized by the resurgence of the Sweet Sixteen Killer — a masked maniac that slaughtered a group of teenage girls in the ‘80s. With the help of her friend Amelia, Jamie travels back in time...

Kiernan Shipka
Amazon Prime Video and Blumhouse Television are teaming up for a new slasher-comedy starring Kiernan Shipka, Olivia Holt, Julie Bowen and Randall Park.

“Totally Killer” follows Shipka’s Jamie, whose mom Pam (Bowen) is terrorized by the resurgence of the Sweet Sixteen Killer — a masked maniac that slaughtered a group of teenage girls in the ‘80s. With the help of her friend Amelia (Kelcey Mawema), she travels back in time to 1987 and teams up with the teen version of her mom (Holt) to try and stop the killer.

“We thought this genre mash-up of slasher/comedy with a twist of time travel was just so fun, and Nahnatchka Khan is perfect to direct,” said Chris McCumber, president of Blumhouse Television.

Jen D’Angelo is penning the screenplay based on an original script by David Matalon and Sasha Perl-Raver. Production begins Thursday in Vancouver.

“The idea of a horror-comedy time travel movie is,...

Apparently SyFy Secretly Shot a New Critters Movie with Dee Wallace
Last week the first trailer was released for a new sci-fi/horror comedy series called Critters: A New Binge, which is coming to Shudder. Now, we learning that the SyFy Channel secretly shot a new Critters movie based on director Stephen Herek’s 1986 cult film.

According to JoBlo, the project has already finished production. It was shot in South Africa and it was directed by Bobby Miller (The Cleanse). The best part of this is, the original film’s lead actress Dee Wallace is also said to star in the film! She hinted at her involvement with the film in an interview with Bionic Buzz, which you can watch below.

There are no details about the new Critters movie, and there were a bunch of production photos posted on Instagram, but many of those photos have since been removed after word got out.

The original 1986 movie centered on a family...

Stephen Herek in Professeur Holland (1995)
New Critters Movie Wraps Shooting, Dee Wallace Rumored to Return
Stephen Herek in Professeur Holland (1995)
The lovable little carnivorous creatures from director Stephen Herek's 1986 horror-comedy Critters have been getting a lot of love recently and I for one am not complaining. First, there is Shudder's Critters: A New Binge series coming next month, which we all know about by this point in time.

But let's not forget that SyFy is also shooting a new Critters movie, which may or may not star Dee Wallace. And speaking of the latter, today we have word that the new movie has wrapped principal photography in South Africa.

Cinematographer Hein de Vos (Tremors: A Cold Day in Hell) shared a batch of vague behind-the-scenes images from the filming of his new Critters movie that revealed February 6th was the last day of filming - and if you look closely you can see the infamous ball-o-Critters getting ready to rock and roll down an epic flight of stairs. Not only that,...

The Invasion Begins With First Trailer For Critters: A New Binge
Though the Critters films have never been popular with the critics, the franchise’s four-movie run from 1986 to 1992 apparently left enough of an impression on horror fans for the series to be resurrected decades later in the form of an upcoming TV show titled Critters: A New Binge.

With a title so inescapably reminiscent of the 1990 film Gremlins 2: The New Batch, it’s almost as though Critters is embracing its reputation as a Gremlins rip-off franchise, though going by the show’s first trailer, A New Binge is leaning further into campy comedy than the Critters’ mogwai cousins ever did. Complete with goofy, gory death scenes, over-the-top acting and low-budget FX, the 1-minute preview should provide all the footage you need to decide whether or not the series is for you.

Earlier this week, it was announced that streaming service Shudder had acquired exclusive Us rights to A New Binge,...

Critters: A New Binge TV Series to Revive the Horror Franchise on Shudder
Joseph Baxter Feb 28, 2019

The classic Critters horror film franchise is returning in the form of a TV series that’s set for streaming service Shudder.

Critters may be but one of several campy horror franchises from the 1980s to – akin to the soon-to-be-animated Gremlins – feature diminutive multiplying mini-monsters, but the imagery of its eponymous alien invaders – resembling demonic bipedal versions of Star Trek Tribbles with shark teeth and T-Rex arms – make them especially memorable, even if the poster image of the toilet monster from Ghoulies was more memorable in its ability to make tense experiences out of nature’s call for a generation. Regardless, Critters is getting a long-overdue return.

AMC Networks’ horror-centric Shudder streaming service will be the platform for a revival television series bearing the meta-minded title, Critters: A New Binge. Moreover, the series is arriving a lot sooner than you might have thought, since the announcement reveals...
