Image
A full Free Movie of the Day is posted on the JoBlo Horror Movies YouTube channel every other day during the week – but on Fridays things get even freakier and a little more fun. Get your weekend started the right way by indulging in Friday Fright Nights! Every Friday, we’ll be taking a look at another genre movie you can watch in its entirety, free of charge, either on the YouTube channel linked above or in the video embed here.

Most of us have probably had the experience of cramming a lot of studying into a short period of time – and writer/director Abie Sidell has turned the mind-breaking anxiety of a cram session into a full-blown horror story with his movie that is appropriately titled Cram. The story begins with a young man embarking on a cram session in the library… and things get quite strange from there.

‘Cram’ Review
Image
Stars: John Dimino, Carolina Do, Brandon Burton, Rolando Chusan, Tobias Arizio | Written and Directed by Abie Sidell

With his final paper due, student Marc (John Dimino) is struggling. His classmates offer constructive criticism, although he’s left rattled knowing that what he’s written isn’t good enough. He tries asking Alice (Carolina Do) to show him his paper for inspiration, yet she disagrees that copying off her hard work is the necessary course of action.

Thus begins a long night, which accurately showcases the mundanity of properly citing references and trying to hit the word count. This continues into the night, as Marc finds himself alone in the library and discovers that his work has vanished. As he hears whispering in the distance, the search for the noise’s source leads to him see things within the increasingly sinister surroundings.

Unfolding across a 44-minute runtime, writer/director Abie Sidell...

‘Promised Land’ Canceled By ABC After One Season
Image
Freshman drama Promised Land will not return for a second season. ABC has canceled the Latinx family drama after a short one-season run.

The news is not surprising. Promised Land, which premiered in January, ranked as ABC’s least watched and lowest-rated scripted series this season and was pulled from the schedule by the network after five episodes, with the remainder of its 10-episode first season released exclusively on Hulu. Promised Land‘s premiere earned a 0.2 demo rating and 1.86 million viewers in Live+Same Day, and the series never found wide audience despite scoring with critics (100 on Rotten Tomatoes).

The ABC dramas “Queens” and “Promised Land” have both been canceled after one season at ABC.

“Queens” concluded its season on the broadcaster back in February. The series followed four women in their 40s who reunite for a chance to recapture their fame and regain the swagger they had in the ‘90s when they were legends in the hip-hop world.

It also starred Naturi Naughton as Jill aka Da Thrill, Nadine Velazquez as Valeria aka Butter Pecan, Taylor Sele as Eric Jones, Pepi Sonuga as Lil Muffin, and Brandy as Naomi aka Xplicit Lyrics.

Zahir McGhee wrote “Queens” and served as an executive producer. Tim Story executive produced and directed the pilot. Sabrina Wind also executive produced. Swizz Beatz served as executive music producer.

‘Promised Land’ to Move From ABC to Hulu After Just 5 Episodes
Promised Land (2022)
“Promised Land” has been pulled from ABC’s primetime schedule after just five episodes. The drama will move to Hulu and finish its 10-episode run there.

The series, which focuses on a Latinx family in Sonoma Valley, has been very low rated in its short run — but critical reviews remain strong. “Promised Land,” which currently averages 2.9 million total viewers per episode, including one week of (mostly) DVR catchup, has a perfect 100% score on Rotten Tomatoes, though it’s only based on seven critics.

That viewer tally ranks the show 88th on broadcast TV, between ABC game show “The Chase” and NBC sitcom “American Auto.”

“Promised Land” is technically not canceled — yet. There has been no decision about a potential Season 2, an ABC insider told TheWrap.

“‘Promised Land’ is a beautifully executed and tremendously entertaining series of which everyone at our company is extremely proud,” an ABC spokesperson said. “We know...

‘Promised Land’ Pulled From ABC Schedule, to Finish Season 1 on Hulu
Image
The new ABC drama “Promised Land” is moving over to Hulu.

The drama series premiered on the broadcast network on Jan. 24. Beginning March 1, it will move to the streaming service for the final five episodes of Season 1. The show has been far from a ratings breakout during its initial episodes. Season to date in the Nielsen Live+7 ratings, it is averaging just a 0.3 rating in adults 18-49 and 2.9 million viewers per episode.

“‘Promised Land’ is a beautifully executed and tremendously entertaining series of which everyone at our company is extremely proud,” ABC said in a statement. “We know it has a passionate audience that is very invested in this show, and those viewers will be able to stream all subsequent episodes exclusively on Hulu every Tuesday for the rest of the season.”

As a result of the scheduling change, medical drama “The Good Doctor” will return earlier than expected for its midseason premiere.

When ambushed by border patrol trucks, the gals managed to hide with the help of Carlos (Andres Velez), a young man they met along the way. Promised Land: ABC's Wine Country Soap Drops Thrilling Trailer
Promised Land (2022)
ABC likes to have a sudsy primetime soap on its midseason roster, and Promised Land looks like a winner.

In the past, we've had one-and-done but highly watchable shows like Grand Hotel and The Baker and the Beauty, so we're hoping Promised Land stands the test of time.

The series is an epic, generation-spanning drama about two Latinx families vying for wealth and power in California’s Sonoma Valley.

The first trailer dropped at the network's panel during the Winter TCA tour, and there was another big announcement regarding the series:

The first two episodes will be available on Hulu the day after the series premiere on ABC, marking the first time ABC programming will be released on Hulu before debuting on the network.

The series premieres Monday, Jan. 24 (10:01-11:00 p.m. Est), on ABC, out of The Bachelor.

Brittany O'Grady
An epic love story will not be taking flight at ABC.

The network has officially scrapped its fairytale drama from Once Upon a Time creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis.

Modern Polyamory Romance is Questioned in 'Lust Life Love' Trailer
Stephanie Sellars, Peter Daniel Straus, Jake Choi, Makeda Declet, Rolando Chusan, and Jeanna Han in Lust Life Love (2021)
"I give you freedom, and this is what you do with it." 1091 Pictures has released an official trailer for Lust Life Love, a star-crossed love story set in the world of polyamory and sex parties in New York City. How's that for a pitch? The film is directed by Benjamin Feuer & Stephanie Sellars, and stars Stephanie Sellars as Veronica. A polyamorous writer's life turns upside down when she falls in love with a monogamous man. She thought she had it all and was enjoying life until she meets Daniel, a handsome, monogamous, married man. The cast includes Jake Choi, Makeda Declet, Jeanna Han, Rolando Chusan, Renee Erikson, and Bill Irwin. I'm glad this film tries to approach polyamory honestly and address a lot of what's going on in that scene. I'm always curious to learn more about different perspectives and this has some unique ones. Here's the official trailer...

ABC Pilot Update: Kevin Costner’s ‘National Parks Investigation’, ‘Dark Horse’, ‘Epic’, ‘Promised Land’ & ‘Triage’ Still Active, Will Be Considered For Midseason
Image
It’s been a busy day at ABC.

The network has handed series pickups to pilots The Wonder Years, Queens, Maggie and Abbott Elementary and passed on pilots including Sam Esmail’s Acts of Crime and comedies Black Don’t Crack and Bucktown.

But there are five pilots that are still in consideration for the 2021-22 broadcast season, including Kevin Costner’s National Parks Investigation, that will be considered for midseason.

These also include Dark Horse, Epic, Promised Land and Triage.

Dark Hose, Epic and Promised Land have yet to be filmed and will be considered after the upfronts, while the off-cycle Triage pilot was produced and went through a rollercoaster ride of a poorly received first cut, highly testing second cut and so-so screening response. National Parks Investigation was considered a wildcard for fall consideration but a final, broadcast-length cut of the pilot, was not delivered in time.
