Exclusive: In an usually heated and high-priced battle for a spec script with no attachments, Amazon MGM has made a deal for Outdueled. The logline for the script by F. Scott Frazier and Jimmy Loweree is being kept under wraps because it is high concept, but I’m told that this went for a high amount because it has such strong possibilities as a franchise launcher. Deal calls for a wide theatrical release, and a fast track to production.

It’s an Escape Artists film, with Todd Black, Jason Blumenthal and Steve Tisch producing with Tony Shaw and Jonathan Shukat. David Bloomfield is exec producer. Courtenay Valenti and Julie Rapaport led the charge for Amazon MGM. They bought it quickly and paid a price said to be the highest in years for a spec with no attachments, in an era when most material sales are loaded with elements.

Exclusive: “We are today… WGA!” was the cry outside Cologne Cathedral yesterday evening in Germany, where around 50 protestors held a rally in solidarity with their WGA counterparts in the U.S.

The demo was pulled together as part of the global Screenwriters Everywhere protests, which encompassed 20 locations around the world. On the ground in Germany were a mix of local writers and WGA members from the U.S. carrying placards and red whistles.

Don Schubert, a German-Canadian writer and director for German networks such as Zdf, led the protests, shouting messages of solidarity with the WGA through a megaphone. Though relatively small, there was a carnival-like atmosphere as writers posed for pictures and their children and dogs ran through the prongs of tourists there to see the mighty 157m cathedral — the largest of its kind in the world.

STXfilms has nabbed rights to “Universe’s Most Wanted,” a sci-fi fantasy adventure starring Dave Bautista.

It will release the film in the United States, the United Kingdom and India. STX acquired “Universe’s Most Wanted” from AGC Studios and CAA Media Finance.

“Universe’s Most Wanted” is currently in pre-production and is scheduled to begin shooting in Melbourne, Australia in late July. The movie centers on a small town that gets a big surprise when a spaceship carrying the universe’s most wanted and dangerous criminals crash lands in their backyard. Soon the sheriff and his son become heroes when they find themselves helping an intergalactic peacekeeper (Bautista) to keep the ragtag group of alien prisoners from escaping and taking over the world.

The deal reunites Bautista with the studio that backed his recent film, the family comedy “My Spy.” However, STX sold to Amazon Prime amid the pandemic so the movie didn’t play in theaters.

Eros STX has taken United States, UK and India rights to AGC Studios and CAA Media Finance’s Universe’s Most Wanted. The picture puts Eros STX back in business with their My Spy star Dave Bautista, a title which was sold to Amazon Prime during the pandemic and did such notable business, that a sequel is already in the works on that pic as we first reported.

Dave Bautista will star in a sci-fi fantasy film from AGC Studios and “Rampage” director Brad Peyton called “Universe’s Most Wanted,” the studio announced Friday.

“Universe’s Most Wanted” is about a small town that gets thrust into a fight for the world’s survival when a space ship carrying the universe’s most wanted and dangerous criminals crash lands in their backyard. Bautista plays an intergalactic peacekeeper who teams with the son of the town sheriff to prevent the escape of the alien prisoners and from them taking over the world.

Olivia Munn is attached to star in action feature Replay, which will be introduced to buyers at the Cannes Virtual Marche by The Exchange.

Pic is written and directed by Jimmy Loweree (Absence) and will be produced by Munn alongside Ethan Erwin and Hal Sadoff for Dark Castle Entertainment.

Replay is the story of Erin Staffer, (Munn), whose husband is kidnapped and murdered. Now, armed only with illegal, bleeding edge tech and a desperate plan, Erin must do everything in her power to change the past and save him.

CAA Media Finance is repping the domestic sale.

Dark Castle is currently in post on Simon Barrett’s directorial debut Seance starring Suki Waterhouse and The Expecting directed by Mary Harron and starring AnnaSophia Robb for Quibi. The company is also heading into production in August on Esther, a prequel to its 2009 horror Orphan.

New York-based Saboteur Media has launched a production and finance operation with a broader sales remit and hired former Miramax International senior executive Mark Lindsay as president of distribution.

The moves comes as executive director Nick Quested expands the suite of services beyond those of documentary distributor and sales company initially launched under the auspices of Goldcrest Films.

Saboteur now operates as a stand-alone entity that produces, finances and sells narrative and documentary features, with particular emphasis on empowering the New York creative community and an opportunistic eye towards television.

The company has the ability to finance tax credits and invest equity in select projects, which will not rely on pre-sales in order to get greenlight. It serves as co-producer on all five titles headed for Cannes.

Cinedigm has released the first trailer and poster for Jimmy Loweree’s upcoming horror thriller Absence. Check both out after the break, courtesy of iTunes Movie Trailers.

Opening in New York on July 5, Absence follows a young expectant mother Liz (Erin Way), who has doctors baffled when she wakes to find her nearly-to-term pregnancy disappear overnight.

The police are investigating the situation as a missing child case and only her husband, Rick (Eric Matheny) and brother, Evan (Ryan Smale) trust her version of events.

Told in the “found footage” style, Evan looks for answers by filming his sister’s experience. The trio embarks upon a trip to the mountains to escape the attention of the police and prying neighbors. When the trip spins out of control they realize that whatever happened with Liz and her baby isn’t over. None of them are safe.

We told you about the child-driven terror tale Absence yesterday, and now we have a quick look at the first artwork for it. Mind you, it's really low-res, but we'll be swapping it out with the high-resolution version as soon as we get it!
