He is only the second artist to have a number one hit on the US singles chart while not being signed to any record label, and the first with multiple number ones. His first two singles "Can't Hold Us" and "Thrift Shop" both reached number one. (The first unsigned artist with a number one hit was Lisa Loeb with "Stay" in 1994).
