Emmy-winning senior producer Adam Weissler is exiting Extra.

Weissler has been the show’s primary film, music, award show and talent booker for more than 25 years. His exit is part of a larger restructuring on the half-hour newsmagazine ahead of its 32nd season.

Weissler joined the Telepictures production in 2000 to re-establish relationships with the industry when Extra made the decision to move away from the tabloid format and return to a talent-friendly destination.

During his time at Extra, Weissler was the first to interview rising artists Katy Perry, Norah Jones, Ed Sheeran and Sam Smith. He also secured exclusive interviews with Taylor Swift, Cher, Madonna and Clint Eastwood. Taylor Swift Buys Back Her Catalog: How We Got Here
Image
Taylor Swift’s years-long saga to win back the rights to her first six albums will go down as one of the most significant storylines in the history of the modern music business, as the dispute brought the complex, often dry world of copyright and master ownership further into the national consciousness. At the same time, the conflict grew her own superstardom to stratospheric heights as the Taylor’s Version re-releases became massive hits in their own right.

Swift isn’t the first artist to re-record her music, though the practice will forever be synonymous with her as she took on the ambitious task of recreating her old albums all over again, while also managing to record and release four new albums (Folklore, Evermore, Midnights and The Tortured Poets Department) and net the highest-grossing concert tour of all time.

As Swift announced Friday, she’s officially bought bought back ownership of the records,...

FCC Launches Probe Into iHeartMedia’s Alleged Payola Practices
Image
The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has launched an investigation into iHeartMedia over whether the radio giant may be offering airplay as leverage to book artists — a practice that may violate “payola” laws — to play at its events.

In a letter to iHeartMedia CEO Robert Pittman, FCC chairman Brendan Carr alleged that “certain owners of federally licensed radio stations are effectively compelling musicians to perform at radio station events or festivals for free (or for reduced compensation) in exchange for more favorable airplay.”

Indeed, US law stipulates that any payments made to a radio station to influence airplay must be disclosed as sponsored content. If artists are trading appearances for airtime without such disclosure, the arrangement could be deemed illegal.

One of the events in question is the upcoming 2025 iteration of iHeartMedia’s iHeartCountry Festival, which will go down on May 3rd in Austin, Texas with headliners Brooks & Dunn, Thomas Rhett,...

Trump’s FCC Is Investigating Music Industry Payola Claims
Image
Turning toward the radio industry, the Federal Communications Commission is looking into whether iHeartMedia is compelling artists perform at its upcoming country music festival for free or reduced pay in exchange for more favorable airplay.

FCC chairman Brendan Carr, in a letter to iHeartMedia CEO Robert Pittman on Monday, said that the inquiry relates to possible violations of government rules requiring broadcasters to disclose payments or other consideration for airing certain programming. Under the so-called “payola” rule, all sponsored arrangements must be identified.

“I want to know whether iHeart is effectively and secretly forcing musicians to choose between, one, receiving their usual, ordinary, and full scale compensation for performing or, two, receiving less favorable airplay on iHeart radio stations,” Carr wrote.

In a statement, iHeartMedia said it looks forward to “demonstrating to the Commission how performing at the iHeartCountry Festival – or declining to do so – has no bearing on our stations’ airplay,...
