Warning: The following story contains spoilers about last week's episode of Yellowjackets, "A Normal, Boring Life."

Throughout the first 26 episodes of Yellowjackets, there are multiple instances in which adult Shauna (Melanie Lynskey) brings out the dark side from behind her harmless homemaker façade. When she drives off a prying journalist in the show's pilot. When she threatens to gut former schoolmate Randy (Jeff Holman) “like a pig” if he tells anyone about his and her husband Jeff’s (Warren Kole) attempt to blackmail the Yellowjackets. When she reminisces about her many times skinning human corpses to scare a carjacker into returning her stolen vehicle. But she never allows that dark side to fully take over. In the Showtime drama’s 27th outing, the eighth episode of Season 3, “A Normal, Boring Life,” she finally does, and it leads to another Emmy-worthy turn from Lynskey.

Well, congrats citizen detectives, you've done it again. "Yellowjackets" season 3 episode 8 "A Normal Boring Life" finally introduces special guest star Hilary Swank. As the fan hive had called, she is playing a grown-up version of plane crash survivor Melissa (Jenna Burgess).

To make sure the audience recognizes her, Swank's Melissa is introduced wearing a baseball cap, like the one her teenage self has often been seen in. As fans had previously caught from promotional footage, Swank is also wearing blue contact lenses to match Burgess' eye color.

Swank's casting fits a pattern. The past storyline of "Yellowjackets" is set in the 1990s, so for the middle-aged characters, the show has cast '90s starlets Melanie Lynskey, Christina Ricci, and Juliette Lewis. After thirteen months of collective solitude, the Yellowjackets got a trio of surprise visitors in the closing moments of Season 3, Episode 6, "Thanksgiving (Canda)." Among them is Hannah, the first adult female to join the Yellowjackets teen timeline. The frog scientist takes center stage in the next episode, "Croak," working alongside research partner Edwin and wilderness guide Kodiak (Joel McHale) to observe the rare Arctic Banshee Frog's mating call.

Portrayed by Ashley Sutton, Hannah and the rest of the trio stumble onto the Yellowjackets as they perform a primal ritual around Coach Ben Scott's severed head. Though Edwin seemingly recognizes the girls as the stranded Yellowjackets, Lottie immediately hacks him to death with a killing ax blow to the noggin—not exactly a warm welcome. The 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards — the top awards event for the independent film and television community — were handed out on Saturday from the beach in Santa Monica, Calif.

The ceremony, hosted by Saturday Night Live vet Aidy Bryant for the second year in the row, was streamed live on the IMDb and Film Independent YouTube channels at 5 pm Et, and across other social platforms.

The 40th anniversary Film Independent Spirit Awards got underway Saturday afternoon, and plenty of stars and filmmakers from the indie world walked the blue carpet ahead of the ceremony. After its streaming release on Hulu last year, How to Die Alone garnered some very strong reviews. However, it would seem that this wasn't enough to save the series.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, How to Die Alone has been canceled at Hulu after one season. It's an unfortunate update for fans of the show who'd been waiting for over four months to see if another season would be coming or not. The show has a high score of 91% on Rotten Tomatoes, garnering very high acclaim from critics, with a strong audience score that's not too far behind at 83%. No specific reason was reported for why the show has been canceled, but it seems likely that it's because viewership numbers weren't as high as Hulu had been hoping for.

Hulu continues to cancel fan-favorite shows before they can become mainstream successes, and their latest cancellation is no different. How to Die Alone, created by and starring Sonic the Hedgehog scene-stealer Natasha Rothwell, has been canceled by the streaming service after just one season on the platform. Although critics adored the comedy, with reviews earning it a 91% score on Rotten Tomatoes, it seems Hulu did not find enough reason to greenlight another set of episodes for How to Die Alone.

On Tuesday, Hulu officially declined to renew How to Die Alone (via Deadline) for another season. It's unclear why the streamer decided to not move forward with more episodes, but it would not be the first time Hulu prematurely ended a show's lifespan. Rothwell, series creator and star, released a statement about the surprising news, expressing her shock and disappointment. Her words:

The awards show celebrates films budgeted at less than $30 million to produce and must be considered “independent.” There are also TV categories!

For the films, Anora and I Saw the TV Glow got six nominations each. Shogun got the most TV nominations with five total.

Nominees for the 2025 Film Independent Spirit Awards — the premiere awards event for the independent film and television community — were announced on Wednesday morning, and FX’s Shōgun led the TV pack with five total contenders.

It was followed closely by Netflix’s Baby Reindeer and FX’s English Teacher, each of which netted four nods.

"How to Die Alone" sounds like a fear-mongering headline in a women's magazine listing the do's and don'ts of dating or fashion, a way to scare women into behaving or looking a certain way to not end up like a "childless cat lady" or some other misogynistic descriptor lobbied by insecure weirdos. The fear of dying alone is not exclusive to women, but American society certainly treats single women as moral failures. It's why magazines used to produce lists of "eligible bachelors" while women age into "spinsters." In Natasha Rothwell's brilliant new comedy, "How To Die Alone" isn't just the title of the show, but a jarring wake-up call for Mel who has a near-death experience while alone on her 35th birthday (the same day she's invited to her ex-boyfriend and current manager's wedding) that puts her in the hospital and face-to-face with the woman in the bed next...

If you have not started watching How to Die Alone on Hulu yet, you need to right now. Jaylee Hamidi plays Allie in the series, and she is one of the most inspirational characters on TV right now. We chatted to Hamidi about the role and the importance of the character on screens right now.

How to Die Alone follows Mel (played by creator Natasha Rothwell), a broke Black JFK airport employee who has never been in love. When there’s an accidental brush with death, she realizes that she needs to take control of her live and start living it.

On that journey, she makes new friends, including Hamidi’s Allie. Sometimes, joint negative experiences can create a friendship that lasts forever, and that’s what we find between the two characters in this series.

Bringing comedy to a dark series in How to Die Alone

Conrad Ricamora co-stars in “How to Die Alone,” Natasha Rothwell’s new Hulu comedy series that explores love and loneliness.

Ironically, Ricamora met his husband, Peter Wesley Jensen, while shooting the show in Toronto after matching on Hinge. The two met at Ruby Soho for their first date. The “How to Get Away with Murder” actor recalls arriving a bit early and being asked for a picture by a group of fans.

“He walked up while that was happening and was like, ‘Oh do you know them?’” Ricamora said of the couple’s very first encounter. “It’s a weird, really funny way to meet. But I immediately knew that I met my person.”

The two married in July 2023. Ricamora shared this story with Variety at the show’s premiere in Los Angeles on Wednesday night.

This JFK airport employee’s near-death experience allowed her to finally take flight in her own life.

Natasha Rothwell, star, creator and executive producer of Hulu’s new comedy series “How To Die Alone,” plays Mel, a down-on-her-luck 30-something who never gave herself a real shot at living.

The first official trailer for the comedy series released Tuesday, and you can watch it below:

Though Mel works at an airport, she is too afraid to fly and ultimately too afraid to start living. After a near-death experience crashing an airport cart, Mel realized that it’s up to her to change her own life.

The trailer features her coming into her own while frolicking on the beach, going on dates and stepping out of her comfort zone.
