Documentary ‘Who Are the Marcuses’ Will Look at Mysterious Israel Donor Couple — Film News in Brief
Image
Stone Canyon Entertainment has announced the start of production on “Who Are the Marcuses,” a feature documentary about a mysterious couple who donated half a billion dollars to Israel, the largest single gift in the history of the state.

Matthew Mishory is directing, with Stone Canyon’s Bradford Schlei and Alvaro Fernandez producing, and executive producers Marc Bennett and Rhino Films’ Stephen Nemeth. Filming is set to begin in Israel and in Austin, Texas in the first quarter of the year for a 2022 release. The film pieces together the lives of Holocaust refugees Lottie and Howard Marcus (pictured), who lived in a modest San Diego apartment and bequeathed half a billion dollars to Ben-Gurion University of the Negev to study water management.

The couple hoped their gift would help bring about regional conflict resolution in Israel and peace through water. The film will explore how they invested their nest egg...

Killer Kate! review – squabbling sisters unite in a bloody gorefest
A pre-wedding party at a remote cabin is invaded by a gang of weirdly incompetent attackers in this ingenious comedy-horror

Here’s a wacky and insouciant horror-comedy sketch that delivers as much in its economical 80 minutes as a whole lot of boilerplate scary movies that drag on for a whole lot longer. (And it rather ingeniously finds a new way of solving the modern horror movie’s traditional problem about why you don’t just call for help on your mobile phone.)

It’s from first-time feature director Elliot Feld and stars his wife, Alexandra Feld, who has a certain elegance and sharp authority. She plays Kate, a woman astonished one day to receive an invitation to the wedding of her younger sister Angie (Danielle Burgess) – astonished because she has long been estranged from her. Kate sees it as an opportunity to reconnect and so, swallowing her misgivings and her pride,...

"Four girls, all by themselves... ya'll be careful." Freestyle Digital Media has debuted an official trailer for an indie horror titled Killer Kate!, the feature directorial debut of filmmaker Elliot Feld. Feld directs his wife, actress Alexandra Feld, as Kate in this violent thriller about two estranged sisters. Kate attends her sister's bachelorette party at the request of their dying father. The weekend, held at a remote cabin booked on a home sharing app, turns into a savage life-or-death struggle that pits family against family, and past against present. Also with Danielle Burgess, Amaris Davidson, Abby Eiland, Tiffany Shepis, Grant Lyon, Robert Donavan, and Preston Flagg. This gets super crazy, super fast, with blood splattering everywhere. I also dig the cold opening with her bloody face. Not sure what's happening but it looks gnarly. ‘The Sinner’: The 13 Craziest and Depraved Differences Between the Book and USA’s Disturbing Series
Bill Pullman and Alice Kremelberg in The Sinner (2017)
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from the finale of USA Network’s “The Sinner” in addition to the book on which it was based.]

USA Network’s “The Sinner” became one of the surprise hits of the summer for its fascinating look at how hidden and unresolved traumas can manifest in disturbing or downright horrifying ways. The psychologically twisted story delved deeply into the past of a woman who seemed relatively normal and happy, but whose abuse at the hands of multiple people eventually led to her murdering a man without apparent provocation.

German crime author Petra Hammesfahr penned the 1999 novel on which “The Sinner” is based, and for the most part the central mysteries remained the same in both versions. The television adaptation naturally also had the expected number of cosmetic changes: Cora Bender is now Cora Tannetti, a song played on a cassette tape now plays on a phone, and the setting has moved from Germany to a small city in New York.

‘The Sinner’: Who’s Behind the Creepy Ski Mask and 8 More Burning Questions Going Into the Finale
Image
[Editor’s Note: The following contains spoilers from “Part VII,” the penultimate episode of “The Sinner.” For a postmortem of the finale episode and a discussion of Season 2, click here.]

“The Sinner” laid out almost all of its secrets neatly on the table, much like the lines of coke that Cora (Jessica Biel) and her friends snorted during the worst party ever. The penultimate episode of the USA Network mystery answered some of the biggest questions that have been plaguing the show ever since Cora stabbed Frankie (Eric Todd), someone she thought she had never met, but ultimately had a very dark past with.

In an episode that was entirely a flashback to that fateful July night in 2012, Cora is guilted into bringing her sickly sister Phoebe (Nadia Alexander) out to a bar and later to a party with Cora’s boyfriend J.D. (Jacob Pitts). They all end up at the elite Beverwyck Club, the place with the distinctive wallpaper in Cora’s memories,...
