Theresa Kane(1936-2024)
Sister Theresa Kane was an American nun in the Sisters of Mercy of the Americas. In 1979, she stunned the Catholic Church when she gave a speech before Pope John Paul II and an audience of 5,000 nuns in which she challenged the pontiff to allow the ordination of female priests.
She earned a bachelor's degree in economics from Manhattanville College (now University), a master's degree in public administration from New York University, and a master's degree in women's history from Sarah Lawrence College. In later years, she taught behavioral sciences at Mercy College (now University) in New York.
