Nicolas Cage is always good for a free-to-stream hit, and that has been proven once again as his 2018 psychological thriller Looking Glass has returned to the Freevee movie chart again. Warner Bros Ent. has revealed an official trailer for an action thriller crime movie called Gunner, which is the (last) name of the guy and not a reference to a "gunner", though in this case both are the same. Assassin is a sci-fi thriller directed by Jesse Atlas starring Bruce Willis and Dominic Purcell.

Assassin leads us, admittedly poignantly, to the terrible conclusion that a science fiction film can be anything but pedestrian.

And this one has that terrible flaw – that it contains no new ideas other than in its initial premise.

The rest, scenes strung together are more or less well done.

Like nearly every preceding opus featuring the erstwhile global superstar in roles of prominent billing but little screentime, this rote genre exercise is little more than a time-killer, and as such a regrettable close to a significant career. Saban Films has acquired Bruce Willis revenge thriller Soul Assassin for North America as well as Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, France, South Africa and Scandinavia.

Saban Films has acquired North American rights to “Soul Assassin” starring Bruce Willis, Nomzamo Mbatha and Barry Jay Minoff, the company announced on Friday.

Jesse Atlas both directed and wrote the revenge thriller alongside Aaron Wolfe, based on their short “Let Them Die Like Lovers.” Jeff Elliott produced, and 120dB Films co-financed the film with Elliott’s Brickell and Broadbridge.

The deal also includes rights for “Soul Assassin” in Australia, New Zealand, Austria, Germany, Switzerland, Spain, France, South Africa and Scandinavia.

“We love working with Bruce and are particularly excited for Soul Assassin,” Saban Films’ Bill Bromiley said in a statement. “Jesse’s ‘Let Them Die Like Lovers’ was such a high-concept, character-driven thriller and we can’t wait for audiences to see this revenge story.”

There is surely a market for an Underworld B-movie knock off, even a badly made one…. Is what I thought before I saw Among the Shadows. Martin Scorsese’s mobster movie swan song The Irishman will not spell the death knoll for gangster films as long as independents continue to mine lesser known criminals. The film Mob Town told the story of the 1958 mafia summit in Apalachin, N.Y., which brought organized crime to national attention. The upcoming series Silent Partners brings a Genovese family unit to series on the same service that brought Robert De Niro and Al Pacino's mob pairing. I can’t stop going back to an old Variety report from 2016 that contained a Braxton Pope quote about producing Looking Glass as what was then to be music video director Dori Oskowitz’s feature length debut. He spoke about how excited he was to partner with the artist in bringing a “remarkable story of voyeurism and grief to the screen.” I read that statement and wonder where it all could have gone wrong since the finished piece now directed by Tim Hunter from a script solely credited to Jerry Rapp (Matthew Wilder was also involved at one point) fails to fulfill its promise. Voyeurism and grief are both included, but neither is meaningful in the context of what proves little more than a generic thriller built from confusion.
