As we have mentioned many times before, the manga/anime adaptation is one of the nucleus of Japanese cinema, with a plethora of titles finding their way to the big screen.”Insomniacs After School”, based on the slice-of-life homonymous manga series written and illustrated by Makoto Ojiro, also follows the same path.
Insomniacs After School is screening at Fantasia International Film Festival
The story takes place In the small city of Nanao in Ishikawa Prefecture, where Ganta Nakami, a highschool student, is suffering from chronic insomnia, that has led him to a number of issues in his life, particularly a constant crankiness and a series of dozing-offs that frequently lead to injuries, usually treated by the school nurse, Ms Kurashiki. One day, the class rep asks him to fetch a step-ladder from the supposedly abandoned observatory, where he stumbles upon Isaki Magari, a cheerful student suffering from the same nocturnal condition as himself.

Even though J-horror will probably never reach the heights it achieved during the “Ringu” era, the Japanese movie industry still continues to produce films of the genre, although in a much lesser frequency. Shoh Kataoka tries his hand in the category, through a film that doubles as a family drama, and definitely thrives on its atmosphere.

Although “Chiwawa” was the film that truly cemented the artfulness of his slightly disorienting, filled with (neon) colors and music, sexually charged style, it is interesting to examine the path Ken Ninomiya followed to reach that level, with his previous movie providing a great opportunity.
The story revolves around Aki Oria, a young girl who came to Tokyo ten years ago to become an actress, but eventually ended up staying in a circus of sorts, having a relationship with Kaito, the young man who introduced her, and acting as the magician’s assistant, with her role being pretending to be hypnotized. Eventually, she manages to land a part after a successful audition, even becoming a star, before a scandal takes a significant toll to her reputation. Is that the reality though? And who is this clown-like figure she calls Butch that seems to always be with her?...

In a cinema as the Japanese, where erotic scenes seem almost forbidden, it feels quite reinvigorating to watch a movie that is fairly graphic in its portrayal of sex. “Call Boy” does just that, but probably its biggest trait is that it avoids becoming crude, almost completely. Let us take things from the beginning though.
Call Boy is screening at Camera Japan
The script is based on Ira Ishida’s homonymous erotic romance novel, which was nominated for a Naoki Award in 2001, earning widespread attention and support from women readers before being adapted to the stage in August 2016, directed by Daisuke Miura and starring Tori Matsuzaka. Selling out every show, the play garnered massive attention due in particular to the actors performing completely nude in front of the audience. Now, the same Miura-Matsuzaka duo has risen to steeper challenges by bringing the story to the silver screen.
