His real name was John Churchilll, and he was an expert archer. While serving in the British army during World War II he actually carried a longbow and sword into battle with him. In 1940 he fired an arrow from his longbow at an enemy soldier and killed him--the last recorded instance of a British soldier doing so in battle.
