A new Tyler Perry series is coming to Netflix and we've just learned the release date! Snowfall's Taylor Polidore Williams and Acrimony alum Crystle Stewart will lead the show, titled Beauty in Black, for Netflix, which will be released in two parts beginning on Oct. 24.

Beauty in Black is the latest acquisition under Perry's multi-year first-look deal with Netflix, where the filmmaker is expected to write, direct, and produce feature films and series for the streamer. His most recent Netflix release was the thriller film Mea Culpa.

Beauty in Black release date, cast, and trailer

Netflix revealed the Oct. 24 release date for Beauty in Black, and the all-new series will be an hour-long drama written, directed, and produced by Perry. The first season will have 16 episodes, which is a rarity when it comes to Netflix shows, most of which usually only have eight to 10 episodes for their debut seasons.

Part one of “Tyler Perry’s Beauty in Black” will debut on Netflix on Thursday, Oct. 24. The series, which stars Taylor Polidore Williams, Crystle Stewart and Amber Reign Smith among others, follows two women whose lives become entangled despite their significant differences. This marks Perry’s first original series created for the streamer.

Williams plays Kimmie, who is living in a hotel after her mother forced her to move out, and Stewart plays Mallory, who is running her family’s successful business, Beauty in Black. It is unclear exactly how their lives intersect.

Smith stars as Rain, a friend of Kimmie’s. In the teaser trailer Kimmie says that she is living in a “pay by the week hotel” as she and Rain walk into what appears to be an event celebrating Mallory’s company.

The contrasting lives of different women played by Taylor Polidore Williams and Crystle Stewart become intertwined by intrigue, fast cars and romance in the official trailer for Beauty in Black, Tyler Perry’s first drama for Netflix.

Though they have diverging paths in life — Acrimony star Stewart as Mallory has riches running her own business, while Williams’ Kimmie struggles after her mother kicked her out — their characters soon become enmeshed.

“Her family owns all of this,” Kimmie tells a friend at one point in the teaser trailer (below), as split screens show her and Mallory hustling in similar ways, as one struggles to survive and the other strives for success.

The Perry series is part of his overall deal with the streamer. The 16-episode, hourlong drama is written, directed and produced by Perry.

Review: Mario Van Peebles is in the enviable position of being a writer, director and actor who can make the kinds of movies he wants with the people he wants. He was able to gain recognition on his own merit, outside of his father’s work, as he appeared in films like Heartbreak Ridge with Clint Eastwood, Ali with Will Smith, as well as cult classics like Gunmen which co-stars Christopher Lambert. He would work with him again in Lambert’s franchise sequel, Highlander: The Final Dimension. Plus, Van Peebles would gain acclaim as a director with the films he’s pulled double duty on — such titles as New Jack City...

If Sergio Leone had ever signed on to make one of those ‘70s Blaxploitation oaters that once provided steady employment for Fred Williamson, it likely would have looked and sounded much like “Outlaw Posse,” a wildly uneven but cumulatively entertaining shoot-‘em-up that finds Mario Van Peebles doing triple duty as director, screenwriter and star. Quadruple duty, actually, if you count his credit as an executive producer.

“Outlaw Posse” has nothing to do with Van Peebles’ previous entry in this genre, 1993’s wild and woolly “Posse,” which suggests the multitasking filmmaker is tipping his Stetson to the multitude of ‘60s Spaghetti Westerns that, ahem, borrowed titles and eponymous characters from better known yet totally unrelated horse operas. But, then again, maybe not. Indeed, the film will probably be enjoyed most by folks not given to undue consideration of such trifling matters as lineage, logic and arrant anachronisms.

This keeps the tradition of the Van Peebles filmmaking lineage rolling along as Mario was also heavily involved with his father, Melvin Van Peebles’ film career. "I never start seeing anybody without stalking them first." Well, okay. Virgil Films has revealed an official trailer for an indie musical comedy called Open. A woman in a troubled marriage falls for her former teen heartthrob, who's fallen from industry favor, while having nagging (and empowering) hallucinations about fronting an 80's New Wave Band. Turns out this isn't really about wanting to be in a band, it's a weird story about open relationships and trouble romance. Starring Lindsay Anne Williams as Kristina, Jeremy London, William Forsythe, Amber Reign Smith, Elena Sanchez, and Miles Doleac. For the film's 10 original songs, writers Doleac & Williams partnered with their collaborator and composer, Clifton Hyde, and Oliver Hofer, to create a musical landscape "that's sure to delight fans of synth-driven 80’s post-punk." Or not. Because this looks really bad - the trailer is incoherent, and I don't expect the film to be any better.

Mario appeared as an actor in films like Rappin’, Heartbreak Ridge starring Clint Eastwood, and the infamous Jaws: The Revenge, which featured an apathetic Michael Caine. He would also head up his own projects as a writer and director, much like his father. One of the more popular films Peebles would be known for is the 90s street crime classic, New Jack City.

Peebles is returning to the director’s chair for a new feature he wrote called Outlaw Posse. The film is a Western that bears no connection to the similarly titled Posse. Highland Film Group has picked up the distribution and has shared a first look at the film with a new picture exclusively shared by Variety.

Exclusive: Mario Van Peebles (Power Book III: Raising Kanan) has wrapped production in Montana on Outlaws, a new Western that he wrote, directed and stars in for Quiver. Outlaws follows Chief (Van Peebles), a renegade cowboy putting together a multicultural team of new and old friends in order to ride into dangerous unsettled territory to retrieve gold from an abandoned mine. Hot on Chief’s tail is Angel (Mapother), a spurned lawman and Civil War veteran with a thirst for vengeance. So begins a cross-country journey, with Chief and his band of Outlaws crossing paths with a number of interesting historical characters along the way, including a true-to-life Stagecoach Mary played by Goldberg.
