Malcolm-Jamal Warner has a long history as a popular television star. Most fans got to know him when he played Theodore Huxtable on the NBC sitcom The Cosby Show. That was one of the most-watched sitcoms of the 1990s and it helped make the young man a star, although he mostly stuck with television after that.

Thanks to his breakout on The Cosby Show, he earned a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for his role as Theo.

Drafthouse Films Buys ‘Mister Organ,’ ‘The YouTube Effect,’ ‘Everyone Will Burn’ (Exclusive)

Drafthouse Films has acquired three films that it will release theatrically in U.S. theaters followed by digital releases across major streaming platforms.

They include “Mister Organ,” a documentary from journalist and filmmaker David Farrier, whose 2016 film “Tickled” explored the dark underbelly of “competitive endurance tickling,” will be released in theaters this fall. As he turns his camera on another stranger than fiction story, Farrier finds himself caught in an increasingly dangerous game of cat and mouse with a mysterious character who expertly manipulates the lives of anyone who dares to expose his secrets. The film, Produced by Ant Timpson and Firefly Films’ Emma Slade and Alex Reed, was a critical and audience favorite at Fantastic Fest 2022, and has become a box office hit in Farrier’s native New Zealand.

‘Threesome’ Director Jan Oliver Lucks Signs With ICM (Exclusive)

Jan Oliver Lucks, the New Zealand-based director of “There Is No I in Threesome,” has signed with U.S. talent agency ICM Partners for representation in all areas.

The controversial film about an open relationship premiered on WarnerMedia’s HBO Max streaming service earlier this year and was the first New Zealand movie to do so. “Threesome” will have its theatrical world premiere at the New Zealand International Film Festival in early November.

Lucks, who says he is always interested in film as a tool for exploring vulnerability, turned the camera on himself for “There Is No I In Threesome.” In love, newly engaged and maintaining a long-distance relationship, he and his fiancée decide to throw traditional rules out the window by opening-up their relationship before they tie the knot.

Nzfc to present four films at Cannes Docs

‘The Girl On The Bridge’.

The New Zealand Film Commission (Nzfc) will be one of eight organisations to present a curated selection of docs-in-progress as part of Cannes Docs.

Running June 22 – 26 as part of the now virtual Marché du Film, the in progress showcase is designed for decision makers such as festival programmers and sales agents looking for new titles.

The films will be presented by a video pitch and 10-minute sequence of the rough cut.

The four New Zealand documentaries and filmmakers are:

The Girl on The Bridge – director Leanne Pooley, producers Cass Avery and Alex Reed. The story of a young woman with the weight of a generation on her shoulders. Having survived her own suicidal struggles Jazz Thornton is a mental health activist, fighting to change how society and the system are dealing with young people like her. This is a film about hope. It is a film about redemption.
