Born in Los Angeles, Gary Gananian studied Social Communication and Film at ESPM - São Paulo and NYU TISCH.
Working in film production companies since 2010 he has been engaged in the production of numerous short films, feature films, music videos and documentaries.
In 2011 he began his first feature film, Armenian Rhapsody (2012), a road-movie documentary that portrays Armenia in a musical and poetic manner. In Brazil, it was selected for the 36th São Paulo International Film Festival and was screened in theaters of various cities. Abroad, the film had its Argentinian Premiere at the prestigious MALBA in Buenos Aires and won the prizes for best documentary film at the Yerevan Golden Apricot International Film Festival as well as in Toronto at the Pomegranate International Film Festival. It was also awarded the British Council Special Prize.
One of the highlights of his recent works goes to his debut fiction short film 'The Creator' (2020), a short meta-linguistic film about a fractured relationship between two artists, which he wrote and directed. The film won 7 awards including Best Film and Outstanding Achievement and was selected in festivals across North America, Europe and Asia.
His short film, 'No Thanks' (2021), an ethereal contemporary narrative showcasing three friends on an intimate journey in seclusion, was selected for screening at the Lincoln Center in New York and was highly reviewed by influential professional creatives such as Kentucker Audley - Founder at No Budge, Ivan Kander - Senior Programmer at Short of The Week and Jeff Hamada - Editor in Chief at Booooooom.
'The Other Woman' (2022) which he directed had great international appraise, winning prizes in countries around the world and having its International Premiere at the renowned Moscow International Film Festival.
His feature documentary about Artsakh named 'The Peace Of All' (2023), with music by System of a Down lead singer Serj Tankian, brings the struggle and lives of the Armenians living in Nagorno-Karabakh in their fight for survival in their historical lands. Covering the Armenian Genocide, the end of the Ottoman Empire, the fall of the Soviet Union up to the 2020 conflict that changed the region's geography, the film captures the different layers of this conflicting story. Amidst the geopolitics associated with Artsakh, certain themes stand out, such as - human rights of indigenous peoples, the effects of war, crimes against humanity and the impunity of the perpetrators.
His latest short film called "Something About Ilda" is to be released in 2024.
