Bobby Moynihan on ‘Saturday Night Live’s ‘Guy Fieri's Full Throttle Christmas Special’
Image
After a handful of appearances as Guy Fieri on Weekend Update, Bobby Moynihan took the impression to a whole new level on a December 2013 episode of SNL. The pre-taped fake Food Network promo began with Moynihan’s Fieri cackling like a madman while promoting “Guy Fieri’s Full Throttle Christmas Special,” co-hosted by Kid Rock (Brooks Wheelan), who enters via chimney.

Fieri/Moynihan then goes on to name-drop an insane parade of early 2010s reality TV personalities as the special’s guest stars — Criss Angel, Bret Michaels, Dog the Bounty Hunter, Big Ang from Mob Wives, the casts of Duck Dynasty and Pawn Stars — as well as, for no reason whatsoever, Verne Troyer and Mimi from The Drew Carey Show.

The promo also features the most insane Guy Fieri-like Christmas recipes imaginable, such as a stocking filled with bean dip and “Straight Cake” — as opposed to fruit cake — made from bacon and Matchbox cars.

Inside Tim Robinson’s ‘I Think You Should Leave’ Tour: Unaired Sketches, Paul Rudd and Why Patrick Stewart Turned Down a Role
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains minor spoilers of Tim Robinson’s “I Think You Should Leave” live show, including general descriptions of unaired sketches.

“I Think You Should Leave” went live Tuesday, April 2, when creators Tim Robinson and Zach Kanin brought their beloved Netflix sketch comedy series to the stage at New York’s Beacon Theatre.

Nearly 3,000 fans showed up for the mysterious, sold-out show, many of them revealing their allegiance to the comedy cult with Dan Flashes button-downs and Corncob TV tees — if you know, you know — and yelling out lines from “I Think You Should Leave” that have been immortalized in gifs and memes.

It was a scene inside the Upper West Side venue, as the line to buy new merchandise snaked through the foyer of the Beacon and created a traffic jam that delayed the start of the program. Among the merchandise on sale were a white...

Seth Meyers on His Return to ‘Late Night,’ the Evolution of ‘Strike Force Five’ and a ‘Warmer’ Talk Show Host Era
Image
Seth Meyers is thrilled to be back. After five months off the air due to the writers’ strike, “Late Night with Seth Meyers” returned on Oct. 2 and the host told TheWrap he and the staff fell back into their groove immediately — with an added pep in their step.

“I don’t recommend going through things like a pandemic or a writers’ strike for the purposes of appreciating your job more,” he said. “You should just do it independent of those massive disruptions. But that is a thing they serve to provide, which is a real appreciation for getting to come in to work every day.”

Meyers said there’s an “eagerness” in the staff’s attitude post-strike, bolstered by the fact that he and his writers all feel the work stoppage was worth the gains they received.

“It helps that the writers, myself included, all feel as though the strike was worth it,...

Dead Pilots Society Offers a Home to Shelved Sitcoms
Image
The archeological annals of Dead Pilots Society, a podcast that excavates unaired sitcom pilots from studio and network limbo, exemplify the love and labor that goes into creating television. Dead Pilots Society rescues comedies that the studio system left on the cutting room floor and proves both an apt and entertaining lens through which to explore a handful of the frustrations that the Writers Guild of America has brought to the picket line.

Presented by television writers Andrew Reich and Ben Blacker, Dead Pilots Society invites all-star casts to stage readings of comedy pilots that were developed by networks and streamers but ultimately shelved, never making it to air. Though an exuberant celebration of sitcom storytelling, the double-edged sword of Dead Pilots Society can strike when audiences get introduced to shows that would rank among their favorite comedies in a Sliding Doors universe where they were produced.

Breaking Down ‘SNL’s’ Biggest Cast Overhaul in a Generation
Image
Click here to read the full article.

As Lorne Michaels tells it, Saturday Night Live’s most significant cast shakeup in a generation is a product of the pandemic.

In interviews after the Emmy Awards and with The New York Times, Michaels noted that in normal times, the likes of Kate McKinnon, Aidy Bryant and Pete Davidson might have left SNL in 2020 or 2021 to pursue other work.

“The pandemic had put us in this position where no one could really leave because there were no jobs,” Michaels told the Times, echoing his post-Emmys comments that there “was no place to go” for long-serving cast members who might otherwise have left beforehand.

Regardless of the cause, Saturday’s 48th season opener will be the first show after one of the largest cast shake-ups in its history. The show did a near-total overhaul prior to the 1985-86 season, and a similar one...

Baymax, the giant, cuddly health bot turned crimefighter and his brainy would-be superhero friends are back in “Big Hero 6 The Series,” premiering as a weekend event Saturday, June 9, and Sunday, June 10, on Disney Channel, the DisneyNOW TV Everywhere app and Disney Channel VOD platforms.

The premiere event features two back-to-back episodes each day from 9 to 10 a.m. Edt/Pdt. The series will air new episodes each Saturday thereafter through September.

“Big Hero 6 The Series” picks up where the Academy Award-winning movie left off with 14-year-old Hiro attending the San Fransokyo Institute of Technology by day and moonlighting with Baymax as a crimefighter, along with his college friends Go Go, Wasabi, Honey Lemon and Fred. The series was set up last November with the TV movie “Baymax Returns,” which rewound to just before the original movie ended, revisiting how Hiro rebuilt Baymax while giving the new series a foundation for new adventures.

The Adventures of Hiro and Baymax Continue in First Trailer For Disney's Big Hero 6 Series

I have no idea if we'll ever see a feature film sequel, but we are definitely getting a new animated series coming to the Disney Channel and today they've released the first trailer! It looks like it could be fun to see the continuing adventures of Hiro, Baymax, and the rest of the team as they fight to save San Fransokyo! Hopefully, the series tells some good stories.

Hiro and Baymax, along with their friends Wasabi, Honey Lemon, Go Go and Fred, unite to form the legendary superhero team Big Hero 6, protecting their city from...

It turns out a wedding isn't actually a requirement to throw a wedding reception, as seen in The Hollywood Reporter's exclusive clip of Random Tropical Paradise.

Written and directed by Sanjeev Sirpal, the raunchy comedy stars Bryan Greenberg as a man who, upon discovering his fiancee's infidelity and canceling his wedding, opts to take his best friend (Brooks Wheelan) on the already-paid-for honeymoon — an adventure that goes awry when they cross paths with the mafia.

Spencer Grammer, Brittany Furlan, Beth Littleford, Kyle Kinane, Jessica Lowe, Ayden Mayeri, Alphonso McAuley, Caitlin McHugh and Joe Pantoliano are also featured in the film.

'Homie-Moon' Craziness in Official 'Random Tropical Paradise' Trailer
"We're in a Fast & Furious movie right now, nothing has to make sense." Gunpowder & Sky has debuted a trailer for a wacky comedy called Random Tropical Paradise, about two friends who end up going on a honeymoon together. The story is that, when one guy discovers his soon-to-be-wife is cheating on him, he cancels the wedding. But his friend suggests that instead of cancelling the honeymoon, they turn it into a "homie-moon" and take the trip to this random tropical paradise together and have fun while they can. As with all tropical paradise movies, this dips into the drug boss trope and there's clearly a few drug trip scenes in this. Starring Bryan Greenberg, Brooks Wheelan, Joe Pantoliano, Spencer Grammer, Brittany Furlan, Beth Littleford, Kyle Kinane, & Alphonso McAuley. This looks a bit too crazy for my tastes. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Sanjeev Sirpal's Random Tropical Paradise, from YouTube: For Harry Fluder,...

Big Hero 6 The Animated Series Coming Next Year
Big Hero 6 is coming back as an animated series on Disney Xd. Come check this out for what we know so far.

Now when I wrote about the first teaser for Big Hero 6 the movie I was very pleased with the concept. Taking a little known Marvel comic and giving it a fresh look on screen was awesome. And it did real well with the fans proving that it was a good gamble. Back in November we were informed the film would get a sequel dubbed Big Hero 7 aimed at 2017 to 2019 for a release. But before that the 6 heroes will debut on the small screen as a Disney Xd show Big Hero 6 The Series debuting in Fall of 2017.

Now we don’t have much except the above teaser but what we do have is our cast for the show. Ryan Potter will reprise his role as Hiro Hamada,...

Original Cast Returns For Big Hero 6 TV Series
Disney’s Big Hero 6 is still probably one of the best (recent) superhero movies, thanks largely to an excellent voice cast and a unique, animated take on the genre. There’s now good reason to hope that Disney Xd’s upcoming Big Hero 6 TV series will match the film in quality, as most of the original voices from the original are set to reprise their roles here.

The Big Hero 6 series is set to pick up right where the film left off, continuing the adventures of Hiro (Ryan Potter), his lovable robot Baymax (Scott Adsit), Aunt Cass (Maya Rudolph), and team of superhero friends – including Honey Lemon (Genesis Rodriguez) and Go Go (Jamie Chung). Other actors reprising their roles comprise Alan Tudyk as tech genius Alistair Krei, and (of course) Stan Lee as Fred’s dad.

Although most of the original cast is back for the show,...

Brittany Furlan To Star In Comedic Feature Film ‘Random Tropical Paradise’
Brittany Furlan recently appeared on the big screen in the film We Are Your Friends. Now the digital celebrity, known for her comedic Vine videos, will star in the upcoming feature-length comedy Random Tropical Paradise.

Directed by Sanjeev Sirpal and produced by his Shabash Films banner, Random Tropical Paradise tells the story of a groom (played by Bryan Greenberg) abandoned at the altar who then goes on his honeymoon with his best man (Brooks Wheelan). The two get into plenty of unexpected scraps and comedic shenanigans, including starting a war between the Triad and the Mafia. Other cast members include Joe Pantoliano (The Matrix, Memento) as a Mafia leader and Spencer Grammer (Rick and Morty, Greek) as a potential new love interest for Greenberg’s character.

Variety, who originally broke the news, didn’t clarify what role Furlan would be playing in Random Tropical Paradise. The Vine star does, however,...

Saturday Night Live, Ep. 41.01, “Miley Cyrus”
Saturday Night Live, Season 41, Episode 1, “Miley Cyrus”

Airs Saturdays at 11:30 pm Et on NBC (East coast version watched for review)

Welcome to PopOptiq’s Saturday Night Live review/recap/extravaganza! Hopefully everyone had a good summer and is excited about discussing the country’s biggest showcase for sketch comedy. On that note, let’s dig right into how horribly season 41 crashed and burned right out of the gate.

Host/Musical Guest: Unless the ratings for this puppy are just gargantuan, Miley Cyrus isn’t going to be hosting anything again anytime soon. The whole point of SNL having a celebrity host is to draw in viewers who are fans of that host and see how they operate in the strange worlds the show’s writers create for them. So rarely does the show push its host to the side, to the point where an argument can be made that...

Saturday Night Live, Ep. 40.05, “Chris Rock/Prince”: Prince highlight of weak installment
Saturday Night Live, Season 40, Episode 5, “Chris Rock/Prince”

Aired November 1, 2014 at 11:30 pm Et on NBC (East coast version watched for review)

It’s a shame when the best segment of any given episode of SNL is the musical guest. This tends to occur in an episode with mediocre sketches and a lack of cohesion and identity, all of which makes it really hard to soldier on until commercials, when one can justify looking at tumblr or updating a watchlist on Letterboxd. This week’s episode is full of this kind of half-backed material, but luckily we were guaranteed one highlight, which did not disappoint, because…

Musical Guest: Prince!!! Man, his performance is so so so good. When it was announced last week that Prince would not play the usual two sets that an SNL musical guest does, opting instead to play a single eight-minute long jam, expectations were somehow...
