King Princess Traces Personal Connection to ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ Character in TV Debut: ‘Music Felt Really Stale’
Image
Note: This story contains spoilers from “Nine Perfect Strangers” Season 2, Episode 4.

While King Princess is best known for her wide-ranging catalogue of pop music, the “1950” singer is taking a leap into acting with her TV debut on “Nine Perfect Strangers” Season 2, with a character whose disconnection to her musical roots mirrors the musician’s own journey.

“Music felt really stale for a minute,” King Princess told TheWrap, quickly adding that, “it doesn’t feel that way anymore” having just announced the debut of her next album this fall, titled “Girl Violence.” “I’ve been doing music professionally since I was a kid, so I was maybe just burnt out from it … but I still wanted to do something creative, and I still wanted to feel like I was honing a craft or learning.”

After going through the audition and callback process for a number of roles, the offer for the...

King Princess Unpacks ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ Character Tina’s Trauma And Creating “The Most Toxic Lesbian Relationship Possible”
Image
Spoiler Alert: This piece contains spoilers for Episode 4 of Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers.

Musician King Princess’ acting debut in Season 2 of Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers comes to the forefront of the series in the latest episode, which marks the halfway point.

As one of the nine new cast visiting Masha Dimitrichenko’s new wellness retreat Zauberwald, this time set in the Austrian Alps, Princess’ character Tina comes to the retreat at the invitation of her girlfriend Wolfie (Maise Richardson-Sellers), who hopes to help the stifled artist work through some trauma surrounding playing the piano. The ennui becomes more significant and apparent when viewers learn that Tina was a child prodicy musician.

“For Tina, it goes back, deep. This is not just about piano. This is about identity. This is about feeling like you don’t have any self-worth aside from one skill, like this skill determines everything that’s important about you,...

AMC's 'Immortal Universe' Franchise Set to Expand Into "Four or Five" Shows
Image
When Interview with the Vampire debuted on AMC back in 2022, no one expected it to become the hit it did. Least of all was producer Mark Johnson, who thought that the series would do well enough to warrant a second season, but an entire Anne Rice universe? That wasn't even on his radar. Once it became a success, Mayfair Witches came the following year, and a third series, The Talamasca, is set to premiere this fall. However, that's not the end of things, as Johnson recently revealed that the Immortal Universe could stretch to four or five shows.

Speaking with Deadline about his overall deal with AMC, the subject of his many Anne Rice projects was broached. Now with three firmly in place, Johnson was asked about the possibility of more being added to the mix. "We have a couple of other things in different stages of development," he answered,...

‘The Talamasca’ – First Look at Upcoming Anne Rice Spinoff Described as Supernatural Spy Series
Image
The Anne Rice Immortal Universe only continues to grow with the third series, “The Talamasca: The Secret Order” that’s slated to premiere this fall, and new details and first look images have arrived.

The six-episode inaugural season is expected to arrive this October and will focus on the men and women responsible for tracking and containing the witches, vampires, and other creatures scattered around the globe.

Franchise executive producer and overseer Mark Johnson reiterated to Deadline that the new series won’t be based on any specific book, as the secret organization is featured across multiple Anne Rice works. “John Lee Hancock, who is a writer I’ve worked with a great deal, has created the world of The Talamasca, all of it inspired by her work but taken a certain amount of liberty, hopefully at the same time always being faithful to what she might have done with...

Nicole Kidman’s ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ Season 2 Continues This Unfortunate Recent Trend For the Actress
Image
The first three episodes of Nine Perfect Strangers Season 2 have now aired, and the poor initial critical response to the series is reflected by a disgruntled viewership. The series, based on The New York Times best-selling book by Liane Moriarty, wrapped up the author's work in its opening season, seeing the announcement of a second season met with confusion. Still, the return of Nicole Kidman's mysterious Masha Dmitrichenko and a brand-new batch of strangers could perhaps rectify the opening outing's poor reception, with Season 1 holding a 59% rating from both critics and audiences.

Alas, the second season has achieved the opposite, with its terrible critics' score now accompanied by a poor 54% from audiences, marking a 5% decrease from Season 1. In a small break of sun in the stormy cloud that hangs over Nine Perfect Strangers' heads, after three episodes, the critics' score that first landed at 38% is now up to 41%, although...

Nicole Kidman Explains ‘Very Quick’ Decision to Wear Blonde Bob Wig in ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ Season 2
Image
Nicole Kidman’s wigs have practically become their own characters in the dozens of projects the Oscar winner has made across television and film.

The latest is a sharp blonde bob she wears as the mysterious wellness guru Masha in the second season of Hulu’s “Nine Perfect Strangers.”

“Everything is very specific,” Kidman told me at the Season 2 premiere event in Beverly Hills. “It’s chosen for a reason because she’s got very strong intentions and agendas.”

Kidman said it was the only wig she looked at after it was picked by her longtime hair and makeup artist Noriko Watanabe. “It’s very quick,” Kidman explained. “We just came up with the character and vibe, how she should be and what she should look for.”

Kidman also explained why she wanted to reprise Masha for a second season. The premiere season was based on the novel of the...

How ‘Nine Perfect Strangers’ Went Off-Book and Leveled Up in Season 2
Image
While Hulu series “Nine Perfect Strangers” used Liane Moriarty’s novel of the same name as the backbone of the Nicole Kidman-led series, Season 2 prompted the team — led by creator David E. Kelley — to go off-book as they crafted the second act of Nicole Kidman’s Masha Dmitrichenko.

Moriarty, who did not write a follow-up book to “Nine Perfect Strangers,” gave the team her blessing for a second installment of the series, which was renewed by Hulu for a Season 2 in June 2023, well after Season 1 first premiered in 2021. And since “Nine Perfect Strangers” first premiered nearly four years ago, EP Bruna Papandrea noted psilocybin (a.k.a. magic mushrooms) have been embraced tenfold, opening the door for countless stories unlocking past traumas.

“There’s no underlying material at all, no ongoing story,” Papandrea told TheWrap, noting that Season 2 picks up with Masha’s past controversies having been written about and publicized heavily.

Nine Perfect Strangers Season 2 Premiere Introduced New Guests and intriguing Secrets
Image
Nicole Kidman leads a new cast of somewhat unwilling strangers seeking wellness in Hulu’s Nine Perfect Strangers Season 2.

Nine Perfect Strangers Season 1 premiered four years ago and was adapted from Liane Moriarty’s best-selling book.

Many assumed it would be a limited series since the first season covered the entire book, making some key changes, such as making the series campier and more dramatic.

(Reiner Bajo/Disney)

However, Hulu renewed it, and it became an anthology series, so Season 2 features a new cast of characters and a new location.

The Swiss Alps almost became another character as the location was gorgeous and more prominent on hikes and other scenes.

Nine Perfect Strangers Season 2 Continues an Unfortunate Rotten Tomatoes Trend
Image
Nine Perfect Strangers marked Nicole Kidman's second Liane Moriarty adaptation after Big Little Lies, which premiered in 2021 as a limited series. Following its initial success, Hulu renewed the show for a second season, turning it into an anthology.

Kidman is officially back as resort director Masha Dmitrichencko with a series of brand-new guests. The series wasn't a big hit with the critics or the audience for the first season, and the second continues the same unfortunate trend. Ahead of its May 21 release on Hulu,Nine Perfect Strangers debuted with an unfortunate 44% score from the critics on Rotten Tomatoes.

The initial season followed nine guests arriving at a health and wellness resort called Tranquillum House, set in a fictional town in California. At the resort, the guests undergo unconventional healing and transformation through unsafe and illegal ways. The second season will take an anthology approach with a similar premise and...

Nicole Kidman's 'Nine Perfect Strangers' Season 2 Lands an Abysmal Early Rotten Tomatoes Score
Image
No one expected Nine Perfect Strangers to receive a second season. What felt like a self-contained miniseries based on The New York Times best-selling book by Liane Moriarty certainly didn't warrant a second outing, although the green light was given, and fans could anticipate the return of Nicole Kidman's mysterious Masha Dmitrichenko. In fact, Masha would be the only character set for a return, as higher-ups hoped that a shake-up in the cast would help critical and public opinion change for the better a second time round, following mixed reviews the first.

Alas, that doesn't seem to have happened, with the first reviews now in on review aggregator Rotten Tomatoes, and the early scores are even worse than last time. Season 1 of the series currently holds a 59% rating from both critics and audiences, which, although far from impressive, is at least higher than both Holland and Babygirl's audience scores,...

Nine Perfect Strangers Season 2 Review — New Strangers, New Secrets
Image
As a self-proclaimed president of the David E. Kelley fan club, I found the first season of Nine Perfect Strangers to be a stunning disappointment, especially considering the talent involved, both in front of and behind the camera. How many shows can boast a cast that includes Nicole Kidman, Michael Shannon, Melissa McCarthy, Regina Hall, and Luke Evans?

The result was a story that wandered aimlessly from character to character, plot point to plot point, and episode to episode, with no real purpose other than to showcase bizarre, head-scratching connections that felt more contrived than authentic. However, at the very least, the freshman outing was highly watchable—perfect for bingeing on Hulu.

I’m pleased to announce Nine Perfect Strangers’ second season is a much stronger effort. Kelley embraces his roots by emphasizing the bond between character development and eccentric storylines, which serves the season well. The individual mysteries concerning...

Nine Perfect Strangers Season 2 TV Review: Nicole Kidman returns for another psychedelic trip with an all-new cast
Image
Plot: Nine new strangers connected in ways they could never imagine are invited by mysterious guru Masha Dmitrichenko to join a transformational wellness retreat in the Austrian Alps. Over the course of a week, she takes them to the brink. Will they make it? Will she? Masha is willing to try anything in the interest of healing everyone involved, including herself.

Review: Four years ago, Liane Moriarty’s bestselling novel, Nine Perfect Strangers, became a pulpy summer hit for Hulu. With an ensemble cast that included Regina Hall, Melissa McCarthy, Bobby Cannavale, Michael Shannon, and Nicole Kidman, the drug-fueled thriller blended some dark comedic elements within a mystery set in the remote Australian wilderness. While the David E. Kelley-created series was based on a standalone novel, the success allowed the door to be opened for a sophomore season. With Kidman returning as Masha in an all-new European location, Nine Perfect Strangers...
