The Most Intense Pop Culture Experience Of 2025 Isn't A Movie – It's A Live D&d Show
Image
Imagine, if you will, standing in line for hours covered head-to-toe in full body paint, surviving on overpriced concession food, and shuffling through massive crowds for the fleeting chance to see Robert Downey Jr. wink mid-gum chew. For years, that was the mystique of Hall H at San Diego Comic-Con. It wasn't merely a convention room; it was a modern-day coliseum, a rite of passage for the most committed pop culture devotees. Hall H once felt alive — a collective organism of cheers, gasps, and groans erupting in perfect synchronicity. For a few charged hours, before everyone stumbled out sweaty, overstimulated, and high on adrenaline, it was unfiltered nerd nirvana.

But in recent years, the roar has faded to a murmur. Marvel understandably forewent Hall H in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, missed it in 2023 due to the dual strikes, and recently announced that they'll sit out 2025 as well. The throne is vacant — or would be,...

‘Dimension 20’ Star Lou Wilson on ‘Battle at the Bowl,’ Wanting to ‘Terrorize’ Brennan Lee Mulligan and Which President Inspired His ‘Cloudward, Ho!’ Character
Image
Spoiler Alert: This story contains spoilers for Episode 1 of “Dimension 20: Cloudward, Ho!” streaming now on Dropout.

As one of “Dimension 20’s” regular cast members (a.k.a. “Intrepid Heroes”) Lou Wilson has played everything from a cyborg engineer to a foul-mouthed wooden puppet. But for the first time in nearly three years, “D20” fans meet a new Lou Wilson player character (PC) in “Dimension 20: Cloudward, Ho!” which hit indie streamer Dropout Wednesday.

The new series, which debuted just days after “Dimension 20’s” live show at the Hollywood Bowl, is an Indiana Jones-meets-Jules Verne-style adventure installment of the role-playing game TV show that follows the crew of an airship as they “Join forces and take to the skies in search of the missing Professor Comfrey MacLeod, [venturing] off to a fantastical world of machine wonders and perils known as Gath.”

Ahead of the “Dimension 20: Battle...

‘Dimension 20’ and Brennan Lee Mulligan’s Busy 2025 Is Saved by 2 Things: ‘Dissociation and Compartmentalization’
Image
For Brennan Lee Mulligan, juggling the many stories and skyrocketing popularity of his Dropout series “Dimension 20” comes down to two key things – “dissociation and compartmentalization.”

For the uninitiated, “Dimension 20” is a tabletop role-playing game series where a group of comedians and actors play through a story – usually using a “Dungeons and Dragons” ruleset, but not always. The format has ballooned in popularity over the years, with shows like “Critical Role” and podcasts claiming equally large fandoms.

“Dimension 20” and Mulligan kicked off 2025 with a bang in January by playing a live show at Madison Square Garden with the core players known as the Intrepid Heroes – Lou Wilson, Emily Axford, Brian Murphy, Siobhan Thompson, Ally Beardsley and Zac Oyama.

Now the show is prepping another bout of live shows starting with one at the Hollywood Bowl on June 1, while also premiering the next season for the Intrepid Heroes on...

Image
Say “sky,” Intrepid Heroes! Dropout has released the first full trailer for the new season of the anthology tabletop actual play series “Dimension 20.”

The new season, titled “Cloudward, Ho!,” features returning game master Brennan Lee Mulligan and Dimension’s main cast of players, known as the Intrepid Heroes.

According to a synopsis, the new season follows the Intrepid Heroes as they “venture off to a fantastical world of machine wonders and perils known as Gath, where they’ll join forces and take to the skies in search of the missing Professor Comfrey MacLeod.”

Beardsley will play Olethra MacLeod, a young woman who’s “extremely into the adventuring legacy of her family” and searching for her missing grandfather, Comfrey. Joining Olethra’s quest are Van Chapman (Thompson), a bruiser type with a mechanical arm who “comes from an old sailor family,” and the heavily-accented Marya Junkova (Axford), who is “gaunt with starvation,...

Comedic culinary competition “Gastronauts” has been renewed for Season 2 at indie streamer Dropout.

Hosted by comedian and Dropout staple Jordan Myrick, the show features a rotating group of three comedians each episode, who all have “specific, ridiculous” culinary challenges for each episode’s group of chefs.

Guest comedians serving as judges throughout the season include Cameron Esposito, Paul F. Thompkins, Emily Axford, Siobhan Thompson, Katie Marovitch, Erika Ishii, and Scott Aukerman.

Hoot Growl! Fantasy High webcomic is coming to Webtoon
Promo One Sheet
It really is our time! It really is our year!

Dropout’s Dungeons and Dragons actual play series, Dimension 20, premiered in 2018 with the first season of Fantasy High. Since that first campaign, Fantasy High has had two sequel seasons, a series of spinoffs, and the most unsettling yet adorable plushie of a balding elf with an affinity for yogurt. The series has become a cultural phenomenon both in the established world of D&d and with teens who like fantasy and are looking for a bit of a giggle. Now it has been revealed that Webtoon is adapting the actual play series into its own comic run, and that announcement has been met with nothing but excitement and delight.

According to that announcement, this comic is set to release 61 episodes, making audiences believe it will depict the events of freshman year, or season 1 of the series. Personally, I hope...

‘Dimension 20’ Star Brennan Lee Mulligan Reveals Which D&d Player Told Him to ‘Eat My F—ing Dice’ and More
Image
Before they made history playing a sold-out show at Madison Square Garden, “Dimension 20” dungeon master Brennan Lee Mulligan and the intrepid heroes that star on the Dropout tabletop role-playing game TV series sat down with Variety for a game of “Most Likely To.”

While everyone agreed that all six players do their fair share of causing problems, Mulligan admitted there’s one intrepid hero with a particular aptitude for antagonizing the dungeon master:

“As the Dm, I’m pointing at a specific person that is right for me [Thompson],” Mulligan said. “I’ve only been told to ‘eat my fucking dice’ on camera by one person. If ‘antagonize’ is an active verb, I think it’s Siobhan.” Thompson, for her part, agreed wholeheartedly: “Oh yeah, I’m not antagonizing him, I’m actually bullying him.”

Though Thompson may be the most outwardly adversarial, Mulligan and the rest of the...

Dimension 20’s ‘Gauntlet at the Garden’ Review: Hilarious Madison Square Garden Show Sets a High Bar for Dungeons and Dragons Live Shows
Image
Madison Square Garden was sold-out and packed with screaming fans on Friday night, but it wasn’t for a Grammy-winning artist or New York sports team: It was a group of “intrepid heroes” who have taken over the world of Dungeons and Dragons.

Dimension 20, a group of D&d players who specialize in monster slaying and absurd improv on the streaming service Dropout, took Msg by storm for their first major live show, “Gauntlet at the Garden.” Led by their dungeon master Brennan Lee Mulligan, the Dimension 20 crew, made up of Zac Oyama, Emily Axford, Lou Wilson, Brian Murphy, Ally Beardsley and Siobhan Thompson, revisited their popular NYC-inspired Unsleeping City campaign. However, D20 fans were in for a treat as surprise crossover characters from other games popped into the show after being influenced by random dice rolls from the audience. Once considered a niche, nerdy hobby, Dungeons and Dragons has rocketed to mainstream popularity,...

Image
The Unsleeping City will awaken Friday night with a live version of Dropout’s “Dimension 20” at Madison Square Garden. The Dungeons-and-Dragons-actual-play-esque show will feature game master Brennan Lee Mulligan and his cast of “intrepid heroes”: Ally Beardsley, Brian “Murph” Murphy, Emily Axford, Lou Wilson, Siobhan Thompson and Zac Oyama.

As the team preps for the sold-out event, dubbed “Gauntlet at the Garden,” Mulligan breaks down his game plan for their first live show of this scale and how he’s constructed a new storyline within the New York City-set “Unsleeping City” season of “Dimension 20” that will involve the audience.

What’s your prep plan for the show?

Be with my wife and kiddo. I’m going to open up my laptop, go over notes, get my little D&d Beyond campaign open, go over my encounters, make sure all my stat blocks are good.

Image
Spoiler Alert for “Ratfish (Part 1)”: Coming out in 2019 after the success of unscripted content for Dropout, Game Changer was an instant hit on the platform. Now, six seasons later, host Sam Reich is still working to bring “consistently original” ideas to the show with no signs of stopping. “Every season, I feel like I fly a little closer to the sun,” says Reich. “And every season, the response I get from the audience is like, ‘This was the best yet,’ which is a very dangerous thing to tell me as I push it more and more, further and further.”

‘Dimension 20’ is raiding Madison Square Garden
Image
Dimension 20, Dropout‘s Dungeons & Dragons show, is coming to Madison Square Garden for a night of live Ttrpg adventure.

Dimension 20: Gauntlet at the Garden will bring together the full D20 squad, including dungeon master Brennan Lee Mulligan and players Emily Axford, Ally Beardsley, Brian Murphy, Zac Oyama, Siobhan Thompson, and Lou Wilson, who’ve been dungeoning and dragoning together since 2018.

The show will be part of the group’s Unsleeping City campaign, which is set in a fictional (as far as we know…) and clandestine sixth borough of New York City that’s powered by magic and populated by supernatural residents. So, of course, it is appropriate that the event–which is Dimension 20‘s first U.S. live show since 2019–is also taking place in NYC.

Dimension 20: Gauntlet at the Garden takes place Jan. 24, 2025. Since the show’s unveiling earlier this month, there’s been...

Now, the original cast -- along with Dm and series creator Brennan Lee Mulligan -- are back in the realm of Spire, reprising their old roles and taking the Bad Kids further than ever in Fantasy High: Junior Year.

Dimension 20's Siobhan Thompson on Fantasy High: Junior Year
Image
Fantasy High: Junior Year is the latest entry in Dimension 20's impressive library of comedic adventures. It's also the first time that the series has revisited a setting more than once. Focusing on the Bad Kids -- a band of danger-prone teenagers from the Aguefort Adventuring Academy -- Fantasy High is the fusion of a John Hughes film and a fantastical Dungeons & Dragons-style world. On their third outing as a group -- and the 21st season of Dimension 20 as a whole -- the Bad Kids are faced with an unexpectedly difficult challenge adjusting to the mundane after a mostly off-screen summer adventure.

During an interview with Cbr, Siobhan Thompson (who plays Adaine Abernant) reflected on returning to the world of Spire in Fantasy High: Junior Year. She also discussed how her play on the Ttrpg series has impacted and been impacted by working on television shows like Rick & Morty.

Dimension 20 Burrow's End Interview: Aabria Iyengar On Shocking Finale Influencing Candela Obscura

The twentieth season of Dimension 20, Burrow's End, concludes with the stoats facing their biggest threat to Last Bast in a final showdown. Aabria Iyengar crafted a horror-filled season with less silliness compared to previous seasons, exploring themes and using the 5e system to enhance the storytelling. The First Stoats were a contentious topic, with Aabria defending their actions, but ultimately they would have aligned against Phoebe if they had survived.

The twentieth season of Dimension 20, Burrow's End, has come to a close with epic battles and the family of stoats making choices that determine the fate of the world. The family of stoats has come a long way from fleeing their Warren and racing through the Blue Forrest, but after wiping out the leadership of the Last Bast, dealing with the human threat and protecting 20,000 stoats falls on their shoulders now. Rashawn Nadine Scott & Jasper Cartwright on Joining Dimension 20

The following contains spoilers for Dimension 20: Burrow's End Episode 1, "The Red Warren," now streaming on Dropout.

Dimension 20 has developed a habit of fusing unlikely genres into comedy gold. But Burrow's End has some pretty big tonal swings even for this group of performers. Dimension 20 Interview: Siobhan Thompson Talks Jaysohn's Near Death In Burrow's End & Fantasy High: Junior Year

Jaysohn's near-death experience in the latest episode of Dimension 20 was intense, but he didn't seem to fully grasp the concept of his own mortality. Siobhan Thompson, the actor who plays Jaysohn, trusts the Gm and goes with the flow, not making any specific plans during dangerous moments. Jaysohn's character has grown and made friends throughout the season, but he still maintains his high self-esteem and doesn't worry too much about the sociopolitical implications of their new society.

Dimension 20's Siobhan Thompson & Erika Ishii on Burrow's End
Image
The following contains light spoilers for the first two episodes of Dimension 20: Burrow's End, now streaming on Dropout.

Burrow's End is the 20th season of Dimension 20. In that time, the Dropout Ttrpg series has taken players and audiences to ridiculously goofy worlds, like the high school/high fantasy fusion of Fantasy High or the nightmarish fairytales of Nevermore. By contrast, Burrow's End -- Dm'ed by Aabria Iyengar -- is a far more grounded story, focusing on a family of stoats who are struggling to survive in a dangerous and mysterious forest after their Burrow is destroyed, and who discover a supernatural presence along the way.

It's proven to be a fascinating challenge for the show's cast, including seasoned players Siobhan Thompson and Erika Ishii. During an interview with Cbr for Burrow's End, Siobhan (who plays Jaysohn) and Erika (who portrays Ava) sat down to discuss the most dramatic season of Dimension 20 yet.

Rick and Morty: How Will the Series Change Without Justin Roiland?
Image
Justin Roiland was let go from Rick and Morty as felony charges against the voice actor and co-creator became public earlier this year. Rick and Morty will go on, but Adult Swim will no longer associate itself with Roiland. He was charged with one count of domestic battery with corporal injury and one count of false imprisonment by menace, violence, fraud, or deceit in Orange County. The incident occurred in 2020 with an unnamed Jane Doe that Roiland was dating. He pleaded not guilty and was released from his charges in March 2023, but by then, the damage was done.

Adult Swim had cut ties with Roiland, as had networks such as Hulu, which produces Roiland's animated sci-fi series Solar Opposites. As a result of Roiland no longer being in the picture, Rick and Morty underwent quite a few changes, especially given that Roiland voiced both Rick Sanchez and Morty Smith, as...

‘Game Changer’ Is the Wildest Game Show You’re Not Watching
Image
The amount of versatility within a single premise is the test of a truly great game show. “Jeopardy” has the clues, “Match Game” has the risqué answers, and “Survivor” has the challenges. But maybe the most versatile game show on air right now — and going for the Emmy that “Jeopardy” has won the last three years running — is one where its entire DNA is based on being a radically different competition every episode.

Now in its fifth season on Dropout (the streaming heir to CollegeHumor), “Game Changer” features a rotating cast of improvisers standing at some very colorful podiums without any idea of the game they’re about to play. “The only way to learn is by playing, the only way to win is by learning, and the only way to begin is by beginning,” host and series creator Sam Reich says at the top of every episode. The Dropout...

The Latest Rick And Morty Episode Raises The Question: Is There An Evil Summer?
Image
For all the "Rick and Morty" haters out there, we're devastated to report to you that the newest season is really good. While even the show's writers will admit that season 5 was a bit of a weird period for the animated series, the first four episodes of this latest season have been some of the show's best. With the premiere being a Rick-heavy episode, the second episode being Morty-centric and the third episode Beth-centric, it makes sense that this fourth episode, "Night Family," shines an extra light on Summer.

When the family uses a device that allows their sleep-selves to do various tasks at night, we soon find out that Night Summer is the leader of the unconscious "night family". When Rick refuses to let the family rinse their dishes to make Night Summer's job a little easier, she stages a violent rebellion that causes multiple massive explosions and ruins their neighbor's mini-garden.

According to an individual familiar with the project, Whedon did not have a direct or substantial role in developing the half-hour series, which was created by comedians Siobhan Thompson and Rebecca Drysdale. The show was to center on Pippa Smith, a twentysomething who played a former kid sleuth on TV, “as she deals with relationships, addiction and being too dang old for the detecting game.” Pippa would solve a new case in every episode, “while unraveling a larger mystery and attempting to navigate her messy personal life.

Joss Whedon is set to help develop and executive produce a new half-hour comedy series for Freeform called Pippa Smith: Grown-Up Detective. This is the first project that Whedon has attached himself to since he dropped out as the director of Batgirl.

Max Landis Accused of Sexual Harassment by Multiple Women
Max Landis
Bright screenwriter Max Landis has been in the news quite a bit lately. Bright is getting torn apart by critics, with one review even calling it a "giant pile of orc sh!t" and now the young screenwriter is being publicly accused of sexual assault. As it turns out, 32-year old Landis has been accused of sexual misconduct over the years, but nobody ever came out and said his name. It has been a pretty big "open" secret in Hollywood that Max Landis was up to some alleged disgusting behavior. Neither Max or his father John Landis have yet to respond to the public accusations.

Late last week on Twitter, one of the actresses from Max Landis' hit YouTube video Wrestling Isn't Wrestling accused the creator of sexual assault. The accusation came in response to a Netflix tweet promoting the recent release of their original movie Bright, which was penned by Landis.
