The off-hand warning, delivered outside the Broadway revival of Glengarry Glen Ross, arrives less than a fortnight after Lionsgate confirmed the Succession Emmy-winner will host Panem’s grisly spectacle in the 2026 prequel film.

Hailee Steinfeld sunk her teeth into the worldwide conversation thanks to her role in Sinners, but well over 10 years ago, she lost out on the leading role in a dystopian sci-fi film that blossomed into a global franchise. Steinfeld was one of the many stars to audition for the role of Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games. Other names include Shailene Woodley, Abigail Breslin, Saoirse Ronan, Emma Roberts, and more. Steinfeld ultimately lost out on the role to Jennifer Lawrence. Now, 13 years after the first Hunger Games movie hit theaters, the film has returned to streaming glory on HBO Max, sitting in the #3 spot on the streamer’s chart. All three of its sequels, Catching Fire, and Mockingjay Parts 1 and 2, are also sitting comfortably in the Max top 10.
The first Hunger Games movie earned a “certified fresh” 84% from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, as well as a solid 81% from general audiences on the Popcornmeter.

In 2023, Blumhouse gleefully jumped on the string of video game to film adaptations, bringing Scott Cawthon’s beloved horror game Five Nights at Freddy’s to a chilling feature-length life. The movie proved to be an incredible success at the box office, earning well over $297 million globally before its run came to an end — and that’s on top of the fact that the title dropped the same day on Peacock. As is the case with most works that celebrate that kind of achievement, fans were quickly asking when they could expect a sequel. Although it may have taken longer than the following would have liked, a follow-up was officially announced in April of last year. Now that we’re only six months away from the film’s debut, many are wondering what they can expect when Freddy Fazbear returns for his next murderous spree.

Scream 7 started filming at the start of January, aiming for a February 27, 2026 release date, with Kevin Williamson, who wrote the screenplay for the original Scream, directing the film from a screenplay by 2022’s Scream and Scream VI writer Guy Busick, who crafted the story with his co-writer on the fifth and sixth films, James Vanderbilt. (Vanderbilt is also a producer on the most recent sequels.) Now, Busick has revealed that Scream 7 picks up “at least two years” after the events of Scream VI.
Spyglass and Paramount once intended to make a Scream 7 that would have starred Scream (2022) and Scream VI leads Melissa Barrera and Jenna Ortega, with Freaky and Happy Death Day director Christopher Landon at the helm. There were a few wishes from fans for the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale, and some of them happened. In fact, there were two characters who returned that we never expected to see again, simply because they’re not alive in the universe anymore. And it’s because of these returns that I refuse to believe the omission of one character was due to bad writing.
Yes, I’m talking about Esther, the young Wife-turned-Handmaid played by Mckenna Grace in The Handmaid’s Tale season 4. She was introduced early on as a bit of hope that the Handmaids would escape Gilead, and in the end, she became one of them. Her tale was another harrowing one, and there was some hope that she would at least be mentioned in the final season, but that didn’t happen.

For the first time in the franchise’s history, original Scream writer Kevin Williamson sits in the director’s chair for the upcoming Scream 7, due in theaters on February 27, 2026.
Neve Campbell is back as Sidney Prescott, with the character taking center stage in the upcoming seventh installment. She’ll be joined by a host of returning players including David Arquette, Courteney Cox, Scott Foley and Matthew Lillard, with Mason Gooding and Jasmin Savoy Brown also set to reprise their roles from the previous two installments.
So what the hell is Scream 7 actually about and how are all these characters going to be brought back into the mix? These are the questions we still don’t have any answers to. But in a new chat with ComicBook.com this week, writer Guy Busick does offer up some mild teasers.

Though her personality and push for success may have rubbed several characters the wrong way, fans have Courteney Cox’s Gale Weathers to thank for the addition of two of the Core Four members in Scream 7. The movie’s scribe, Guy Busick (Final Destination Bloodlines), recently sat down with ComicBook and revealed how Core Four favorites and twins — Mindy (Jasmin Savoy Brown) and Chad Meeks-Martin (Mason Gooding) — will make their way into the seventh installment. Giving “credit where credit is due,” Busick revealed that it was his Scream (2022) and Scream VI co-writer, James Vanderbilt, who first pitched “an organic way why they would be in this movie.”
Careful to not step on the loaded minefield of spoilers, he continued,

The impending return of multiple characters in Scream 7 has been explained by screenwriter Guy Busick. The slasher sequel will only feature two of the Core Four characters who were introduced in 2022's Scream and returned in Scream VI, namely Chad (Mason Gooding) and Mindy Meeks-Martin (Jasmin Savoy Brown), after their co-star Melissa Barrera was fired following pro-Palestine social media posts and Jenna Ortega subsequently exited the project as well. The upcoming Scream 7 also sees Neve Campbell reprising the role of franchise final girl Sidney Prescott after having skipped out on the sixth movie due to a pay dispute.
ComicBook recently interviewed screenwriter Guy Busick when he was promoting his new movie Final Destination Bloodlines. However, the conversation also touched on Scream 7, and he offered some insight into how and why Sidney Prescott and the Meeks-Martin twins will return in the new movie, which was directed by franchise screenwriter Kevin Williamson.

Scream 7 started filming at the start of January, aiming for a February 27, 2026 release date, and we’ve seen some surprising reports about the slasher sequel as it has made its way through production – with the most surprising and strange news being that Matthew Lillard and Scott Foley, who played Ghostface killers who were killed off in Scream (1996) and Scream 3, respectively, and David Arquette, whose beloved character Dewey lost his life in Scream (2022), are all in the cast. But there’s one person on the Scream franchise body count that has been hoping to come back for Scream 7 and hasn’t been contacted yet: Sarah Michelle Gellar, who played ill-fated college student Cici Cooper in Scream 2.
Gellar told Entertainment Tonight (with thanks to Coming Soon for the transcription), “I’m not in [Scream 7]. I tried to get in [Scream 7], nobody wanted me. They were bringing everybody back.

New Hunger Games: Sunrise On The Reaping Cast Revealed(Photo Credit –Instagram)
Lionsgate just dropped a major casting bomb for the Hunger Games prequel, and it’s one hell of a lineup. Based on Suzanne Collins’ March 2025 novel, Sunrise on the Reaping hits theaters on November 20, 2026. This time, we’re heading back more than 20 years before Katniss’ rebellion to follow a 16-year-old Haymitch Abernathy—yes, that Haymitch, long before he was the bitter, boozy mentor with a death glare and a flask.
Australian breakout Joseph Zada will step into the younger Haymitch’s shoes. You might’ve caught him in Total Control or Invisible Boys, but now he’s taking on the 50th Hunger Games (aka the Second Quarter Quell) with more heart and heartbreak than we’ve ever seen from the character. The twist? He’s sober, smitten, and politically aware.

Well, Caesar was a Roman, wasn't he? Academy Award-winner Kieran Culkin has become the latest huge name to join the increasingly impressive and, quite frankly, absurd cast of The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping, taking on the role of Caesar Flickerman. Flickerman is, of course, the pompous and purple-haired television host who serves as the voice of The Capitol during the Hunger Games. Culkin will be playing a younger version of the character, first portrayed by Stanley Tucci with enormous teeth in the original four movies. Jason Schwartzman also played another Flickerman, Caesar's father — we assume — Lucretius "Lucky" Flickerman in The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes.
The film, based on the latest bestseller by Suzanne Collins, takes place 24 years before Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) ever volunteered as tribute — before Caesar was gleefully commentating on her rise to rebellion. Sunrise on the Reaping focuses on a teenage Haymitch Abernathy, played by newcomer Joseph Zada,...

What would the 50th Hunger Games be without the quirky and beloved Effie Trinket? Well, fans won’t have to worry because Elle Fanning has officially been cast in the role of Haymitch Abernathy’s (Joseph Zada) stylist in the upcoming feature film, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. Effie was originally portrayed by Elizabeth Banks in the franchise’s first four films, but the part is now in the capable hands of the A Complete Unknown and Predator: Badlands star. Lionsgate Motion Picture Group co-president Erin Westerman said of the brilliant casting move via The Hollywood Reporter:
"From the moment Suzanne released the book, one question echoed from fans around the world: Who will play Effie? Elizabeth Banks made her iconic — so who could honor that legacy while bringing us back to Effie’s early, most formative days? For us, there was only one answer. Elle Fanning’s career has been transcendent.

Elle Fanning is ready to volunteer as tribute for Lionsgate‘s Hunger Games prequel, The Hunger Games: Sunrise on the Reaping. For what might be the most fitting casting yet, Fanning will play Effie Trinket in the latest installment of the Hunger Games film franchise. Elizabeth Banks played Effie in the original Hunger Games films, lighting up the screen whenever she’d smile through the pain and swish around in the latest Panem fashions.
Effie Trinket is the escort for District 12 tributes and acts as an advisor to Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark in the original films (and novels). She chaperones the tributes to the Capitol and other events. She also acts as a stylist, ensuring her tributes stand out. After the Second Rebellion, she is the only living escort from the 74th and 75th Hunger Games.

Set a quarter-century before the original series, “Sunrise on the Reaping” tells the story of how Haymitch Abernathy, the future mentor to Katniss Everdeen, became the first District 12 resident to win the Hunger Games.
Elle Fanning joins a cast led by Joseph Zada as Haymitch and also includes Whitney Peak, Mckenna Grace, Jesse Plemons, Kelvin Harrison Jr., Maya Hawke, Lili Taylor, Ben Wang and Ralph Fiennes.
“From the moment Suzanne released the book, one question echoed from fans around the world: Who will play Effie? Elizabeth Banks made her iconic—so who could honor that legacy while bringing us back to Effie’s early, most formative days? For us, there was only one answer,” Lionsgate motion picture group co-president Erin Westerman said.
