It’s interesting to see women directors in India pushing the envelope to explore themes. After we had Farah Khan doing a ‘boys’ film (Main Hoon Na), the following year, Vinta Nanda, a past master at TV soaps, turned the tables on the macho brigade in Bollywood by doing the kind of angst-laden film on suburban paranoia that would normally go to a male director like Mahesh Bhatt.
White Noise is Mahesh Bhatt’s Arth without the comfort of distance. Nanda plunges right into the centre of her protagonist’s anguished universe. Her first-hand experiences in the TV industry, her despair at getting caught up in the mediocrity and morass of the Great Indian Soap Trick, and most importantly, her acerbic study of promiscuous, easy-flowing relationships in showbiz are given a peculiarly pungent treatment in her debut spin.
By a stroke of luck, Nanda has got a relatively untried but...

18 years ago, Aurag Kashyap’s drama Black Friday released. Subhash K Jha revisits the film that starred Pavan Malhotra, Kk Menon, and Aditya Srivastav.
Recreating the events leading up to the ‘Bombay’ blasts (there was no Mumbai back then) on 12 March 1993, Anurag Kashyap’s clenched drama on the second-worst terror attack in Mumbai is a source of constant shock. On each viewing, you will come across new facets of the dark, diabolic characters plotting a conspiracy that still boggles the mind.
The extraordinary cast adds considerably to the palate of pulsating action. Watch out especially for Pavan Malhotra as Tiger Memon, K K Menon as inspector Rakesh Maria, and Aditya Srivastava Badshah Khan. Oh, didn’t I tell you? This film, for once, names and shames real-life terrorists.
Anurag Kashyap’s desperately dark exploration of the plan to blow up Mumbai had several exceptional performances, none more so than Pavan,...

Mumbai, Aug 3 (Ians) The first song ‘Main Peeche Peeche’ from the upcoming film ‘Skanda- The Attacker’ starring Ram Pothineni, Sreeleela was unveiled on Thursday.
The composer S. Thaman is in his element as he has composed a very peppy and massy tune with full-on mass beats and crazy lyrics which are quite rhythmic. The music director keep the mood and tempo of the song upbeat. The vocals of Sreerama Chandra and Malvika combined with youthful lyrics by Ritesh G. Rao.
Ram’s energy and Sreeleela’s glamour took the song to the next level. The actress indeed matched the energy of Ram. Both have set the dance floor on fire with their elegant and electrifying dances. The costumes and the colorful set also added more weight to the song.

Years before Star Wars: The Last Jedi, another Star Wars story was told with the same subtitle that Disney should revisit given the studios' expansion of the galaxy. After Disney's sequel trilogy of Star Wars movies, the title of The Last Jedi is synonymous with the eighth entry in the Skywalker Saga. Written and directed by Rian Johnson, Star Wars: The Last Jedi is undoubtedly the most divisive Star Wars project to date, with many classing it as the best Star Wars film since The Empire Strikes Back while the other half of the fanbase views it as a disrespectful disregard of George Lucas' legacy.
Before Disney's official tenure as the owner of Lucasfilm though, The Last Jedi had another meaning for those familiar with wider Star Wars stories. Since Lucas began the franchise in the 1970s, various writers, artists, and creatives became involved in a galaxy far, far away.

One day, at an event in Bengaluru, he witnessed a Dollu (double-headed drum native to Karnataka) performance. It was something he’d seen many times before, but watching the Dollu Kunitha practitioners playing the drums with gay abandon struck a different chord. “It was like I did not just hear the music, but saw the visuals that accompanied it and felt the reverberations it triggered,” Sagar recalls. He wondered how it would look on the big screen, because not many films spoke about the folk arts or music in detail. At the same time, during a conversation with a cab driver,...
