Johan Cronje is a multi-award-winning South African film director, screenwriter, and editor whose work has earned accolades at the SAFTAs, Silwerskerm, and international film festivals alike. His debut feature film Wonderlus (2017) won Best Script, Best Actress, and Best Supporting Actor at Silwerskerm, and was officially selected to nine international festivals, picking up awards including Best Director (Ramsgate IFF) and Best International Feature (New Renaissance FF).
His writing and directing credits include the award winning Showmax drama Wyfie (2024), TV movies Meisies Wat Fluit (2020) and The Day We Didn't Meet (2021), and he co-directed the award-winning drama Nêrens, Noord-Kaap (2021). He was also a key figure behind the scenes at South African production house Nagvlug Films (2012-2023), serving as Producer and Post-Production Supervisor on major titles like Barakat (2020) and Donkerbos (2022).
Johan holds an Honours degree in Film Studies from UCT and a BA in Motion Picture Medium from AFDA, where he majored in editing. He won a SAFTA Golden Horn in 2017 for his work on the period drama Bloedbroers, and has received numerous nominations for his work on acclaimed TV comedies such as Hotel (2016-2022) and Taktiek (2023).
