The important meaning behind the red handprint on Reservation Dogs' D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai face at the Emmys
Image
If you missed the Emmy red carpet, you might not have known that Reservation Dogs star D’Pharaoh Woon-a-Tai arrived with an important symbol on his face. However, during the opening by Eugene and Dan Levy, the camera panned to the actor as the father-son duo cracked a joke about the Television Academy "discovering" a well beloved comedy series that's being honored for the first time in the acting and series categories this year despite being critically-acclaimed since its freshman season.

Woon-a-Tai is up for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his performance as Bear Smallhill and he's using the moment to shine light on a very serious cause. The red handprint across his mouth represents solidarity with Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women whose stories are not often told and who are largely ignored by the media and law enforcement.

Native Hope--an organization dedicated to "address[ing] the injustice...

Alaska Daily Cast & Character Guide: Where You've Seen The Actors Before
Image
"Alaska Daily" was a crime drama that tackled the issue of missing and murdered Indigenous women in Alaska, but it was unfortunately canceled before gaining momentum. The show struggled to balance the sensibilities of a network procedural and a more mature streaming show, but it provided valuable insights into the work of journalists reporting on marginalized communities. The talent of the cast, including Hilary Swank, Jeff Perry, and other notable actors, was undeniable, adding to the potential of the series despite its tonal issues.

The cast of Alaska Daily includes popular television and film actors as well as a notable Oscar winner in its ensemble cast. Alaska Daily is an ABC crime drama that follows Eileen Fitzgerald (Hilary Swank), a New York journalist who comes to a small newsroom in Anchorage, Alaska to have a fresh start after personal and professional problems in NYC force her to leave. In Alaska,...

Alaska Daily Gets Canceled After One Season at ABC
Image
It's going to be one season and done for the ABC series Alaska Daily. Per Deadline, it's been revealed that the network has canceled the show with no plans to develop a second season. The news comes after the first season struggled to pick up in the ratings from its October 2022 debut to when the finale aired in March. For those watching, the show was pretty well received, pulling in an 86% audience score at Rotten Tomatoes with a 74% approval rating. Series star Hilary Swank would also be nominated for a Golden Globe Award for her role in the series. But despite the positive reception, there just weren't enough people watching for ABC to commit to season 2.

The series, developed for ABC by Tom McCarthy, was inspired by the Anchorage Daily News and ProPublica article series called Lawless: Sexual Violence in Alaska, which was first published in 2019. The coverage was spearheaded by reporter Kyle Hopkins,...

‘Alaska Daily’ Canceled After One Season At ABC
Image
ABC has canceled Hilary Swank-led drama series Alaska Daily after one season. The news is not surprising as the freshman series was not able to establish itself and find a sizable following.

From Tom McCarthy, the series follows fiercely talented and award-winning investigative journalist Eileen Fitzgerald (Swank) who leaves her high-profile New York life behind after a fall from grace to join a daily metro newspaper in Anchorage on a journey to find both personal and professional redemption.

As a reporter for a local metro newspaper, Eileen is investigating a cold case stacked with missing indigenous women with scarce details in desperate need of fresh eyes. The dark spaces where she has to investigate reveal the city’s seedy underbelly that could prove to be dangerous for Eileen as she begins to uncover secrets many would rather stay buried.

Native American Women Keep Turning Up Dead. Why Is Nothing Being Done?
Image
Their stories are achingly similar. A young Native American woman goes to a house party, or drinks with friends, or just ventures out into the Montana night. She doesn’t come home. Law enforcement, after untangling questions of jurisdiction, conducts a search. Sometimes the bodies are recovered, the cause of death chalked up as “hypothermia.” Sometimes they’re never found at all.

The crisis of missing and murdered Indigenous women (or Mmiw) has plagued Native communities since the age of European colonization — and it continues to this day, especially among...

Alaska Daily: Hilary Swank Drama's Midseason Return Pushed Back at ABC
Hilary Swank in Alaska Daily (2022)
We have some bad news for fans of ABC's Alaska Daily.

The Hilary Swank drama has been bumped from its planned February 23 return.

Instead, the back half of the season will resume Thursday, March 2, at 10 p.m.

The reason for the switcheroo?

ABC wants to air the remaining episodes across consecutive weeks, which is probably for the best.

With the network's revamped schedule, the series will return on March 2 and wrap up its freshman season on March 30.

Given the heavily serialized nature of Alaska Daily, having random breaks will not help the series build momentum.

Procedurals like NCIS and Law & Order can thrive with more than a few hiatuses because there's very little connective tissue between episodes.

Alaska Daily stars Hilary Swank as Eileen Fitzgerald, a fiercely talented and award-winning investigative journalist who leaves her high-profile New York life behind after a fall from grace to join a daily...

In CBC Original ‘Bones of Crows,’ Marie Clements is Ready to Tell the Truth about Canada’s Residential Schools
Image
Billed as the first Indigenous and female-led produced, written, and directed drama about the residential school experience in North America, Marie Clements’ “Bones of Crows” is not afraid of making people uncomfortable.

“We should be squeamish about it,” the helmer tells Variety at Mipcom, addressing the show’s graphic scenes. A concurrent feature film is also in the works.

“I never felt it was too harsh or too violent, but violence towards Indigenous people is a fact. I wanted the audience to understand it, but also understand the release of that, the release of the past.”

Her decades-spanning story, told over the course of five episodes, focuses on Cree matriarch Aline as she survives a childhood in Canada’s residential school system and then continues to fight against systemic starvation, racism and sexual abuse.

‘Alaska Daily’ Review: Hilary Swank Stars as a Journalist in ABC’s Ham-Handed Series
Image
Click here to read the full article.

The TV creator’s equivalent of the trolley problem: A TV show is like a runaway trolley. Broadcast is still the best way to run over (or reach) the most people, and if you stay the course, you might reach (or run over) five people, but there aren’t any TV critics or Emmy voters in that direction. But if you pull the lever, you shift tracks and go down a cable or streaming direction and you may reach (or run over) only one person, but that person is really influential and might tell everybody that you’re making great art, which is bound to be gratifying (and means you didn’t kill five people, if you’re really stuck on the original analogy). As much as you might think you want to go down both tracks at once, you can’t.

Fine.

‘Alaska Daily’ Review: Hilary Swank Series Is Yesterday’s News

ABC’s new drama Alaska Daily is basically three different shows lurking under the same title. One is good, one is fine, and one is terrible.

Guess which one Alaska Daily spends the least amount of time on?

A big scoop, about the country’s proposed new secretary of defense, blows up in her face when her sourcing is challenged, and soon her only employment option is to...

‘Alaska Daily’ Shows Us an Appealingly Dogged Side of Hilary Swank: TV Review
Image
Tom McCarthy’s “Spotlight” is the single best film about journalism of our era. So while it comes as no surprise that the writer-director’s take on life at a daily paper for ABC is substantially better than the average 2020s network drama, it’s certainly good news.

On the McCarthy-created “Alaska Daily,” Hilary Swank plays Eileen Fitzgerald, a high-powered newspaper reporter whose reporting comes into question in the pilot’s early going; her losing her job is as much about the claims against her work as it is about the fact that her sudden vulnerability opens up a conversation about her habit of talking down to colleagues. Suddenly, she’s spinning her wheels, endlessly reporting a book that may never see daylight; the conditions are perfect for her to accept the offer of a former mentor to take a job in Anchorage.

Swank, who has not consistently been served well by television,...

Hilary Swank Introduces Her Journalist on a Mission in ‘Alaska Daily’
Hilary Swank
In her last TV series, 2020’s Away, Hilary Swank played the commander of the first crewed spaceflight to Mars. With ABC’s new drama Alaska Daily, she’s another woman on a mission. Swank stars as hard-hitting New York journalist Eileen Fitzgerald, who comes under fire for an alleged error in her latest exposé — and for her brusque treatment of coworkers. A few months later, a former colleague, Stanley Kornik (Scandal’s Jeff Perry), offers her a job at his Anchorage newspaper. He hopes she’ll be able to break an important story about missing Indigenous women. The gig will be harder than Eileen thinks. She has to (gulp) work with someone — ambitious young reporter Roz Friendly (Grace Dove) — get locals to talk to an outsider and deal with a police department that’s iced out the paper. Here, Swank spills. (Credit: ...

Peter Elkoff Set As Showrunner Of New ABC Series ‘Alaska’ Starring Hilary Swank, Leaves ‘The Resident’
Image
Exclusive: Peter Elkoff has joined newly ordered ABC/20th Television drama series Alaska, headlined by Hilary Swank, as executive producer and showrunner. For the past two seasons, the seasoned TV writer-producer served as executive producer and co-showrunner on another 20th TV drama series, Fox’s The Resident. Fellow exec producer/co-showrunner Andrew Chapman will be the sole showrunner for the medical drama’s upcoming sixth season.

Alaska, created by Spotlight filmmaker Tom McCarthy, who wrote and directed the pilot, emerged as an early front-runner at ABC this pilot season, making the search for a showrunner a big priority for the studio. With The Resident on the bubble as renewal negotiations between Fox and 20th TV went down to the wire, Elkoff was approached about Alaska and took the job with the 20th TV’s blessing.

How It Ends Trailer Has Theo James and Forest Whitaker Fighting the Apocalypse
A mysterious apocalypse causes the spread of misinformation and violence in the new trailer for Netflix's How It Ends. Forest Whitaker stars alongside Theo James in the intense trailer, which teases that there's something else going on under the surface. Extreme natural disasters are occurring as Whitaker's Tom and James' Will race across the country to save Will's pregnant wife, who is also the daughter of Tom. The blockbuster for the small screen is intense and looks like it would fit in with any other of the popcorn movies currently in theaters.

Forest Whitaker is in full on action mode for How It Ends as a hard ass father-in-law, who knows his way around firearms and insane automobile stunts. The tough guy approach comes off well in the recently released trailer, while Divergent series star Theo James' Will character comes off as a bit timid at the start. By the end of the trailer,...

Theo James in Trailer for Apocalyptic Film 'How It Ends' from Netflix
"There's a lot to be afraid of out there..." Netflix has debuted an official trailer for an indie film titled How It Ends, the latest from filmmaker David M. Rosenthal. How It Ends is a post-apocalyptic survival thriller, one of those where they don't really explain the apocalypse or what happened. The plot involves a desperate father trying to return home to his pregnant wife after a mysterious apocalyptic event turns everything to chaos. Theo James stars, along with Forest Whitaker, Kat Graham, Kerry Bishé, Mark O'Brien, Nicole Ari Parker, and Grace Dove. This pretty much came out of nowhere, so I'm not sure what to make of it. It seems like there's some cool things going on here, but I really don't have a good feeling. It's worth a look just to check out another Netflix film. Here's the first official trailer (+ poster) for David M. Rosenthal's How It...
