Gym Freak Turns Killer in Bloody Welsh Horror ‘Protein’
Image
A grisly blend of dark comedy, urban decay and escalating gang violence is headed to cinemas this June with Protein, the debut feature from writer-director Tony Burke. The film, which had its world premiere at FrightFest 2024 to strong reviews and a sold-out crowd, will open in select UK cinemas on 13 June via Bulldog Film Distribution, followed by a digital release on 14 July.

Expanding on Burke’s 2014 short of the same name, Protein follows a traumatised former soldier named Sion, played by Craig Russell, who returns to his hometown in South Wales in search of peace and routine. What he finds instead is a destructive obsession with bodybuilding and a chilling compulsion to consume human flesh for its protein content. When he murders and eats a local drug dealer, it sets off a violent chain reaction that spirals far beyond his control, pitting rival criminal factions against one another in a rapidly escalating turf war.

Image
On Jan. 20, Fire Captain Andrea Hall made history as she led the Pledge of Allegiance for President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris's inauguration. In addition to a verbal recitation, Andrea led the pledge in American Sign Language - further emphasizing the event's inclusive "America United" theme. To the best of the inaugural committee's knowledge, this was the first time the pledge was delivered in Asl on Inauguration Day.

According to The 19th, Andrea was the first Black woman hired to a station at the City of Albany Fire Department when she started her career in 1993. She continued to break molds as the first Black woman to become fire captain at Fulton County Fire Rescue over 16 years ago.

Andrea prepared for the inauguration meticulously, taking tally notes in her 80-page notebook for every time she practiced the pledge. She wanted to do its message justice. "Everything [the pledge] expresses, I...
