TV Industry Must Accept Some Responsibility For Its Role In UK Riots, Says Carol Vorderman
Image
The TV industry must accept some responsibility for its role in the recent UK riots, alternative MacTaggart lecturer Carol Vorderman has proclaimed.

The former Countdown icon delivered a broadside against the industry’s treatment of working class voices – a theme at this year’s Edinburgh TV Festival – along with the way in which the mainstream media and public broadcasters have failed the nation.

Vorderman, who has turned to political activism in recent years, did not hold back, and drew on the recent riots as an example.

She said: “After 14 years of austerity and lying by the privileged political class, this country is in an absolute mess and the TV industry must accept part of the responsibility for that too, including the riots. We used to be the message makers, the ones who tried to determine the conversation of the country and how responsible have we been with those messages? Not very,...

ITV Boss Says “We Are Not Turning Stuff Down Because We Can’t Afford It” To Reassure Producers Amid Market Contraction – Edinburgh
Image
ITV is yet to find itself in a position where it is “turning stuff down because we can’t afford it,” according to programs boss Kevin Lygo, who nonetheless acknowledged “the middle ground has gone” from the the market due to massive hits like Netflix’s The Gentlemen.

Addressing the Edinburgh TV Festival, Lygo attempted to calm nerves among the producers watching his session over a lack of work, coming after a panel during which a number of execs said there are far too many production companies in the ecosystem.

Lygo said his commissioning team is constantly thinking about the balance between not wanting to “mortgage the whole future” and commissioning a producer “walking in with something that you suddenly want to do next week.”

In the face of market contraction and dozens of layoffs, he said he “understands how hard it is for small indies to get business away...

‘Peeping Tom’ Blu-ray Review
Image
Stars: Karlheinz Bohm, Maxine Audley, Anna Massey, Moira Shearer, Brenda Bruce, Esmond Knight, Martin Miller, Michael Goodliffe, Jack Watson, Shirley Anne Field | Written by Leo Marks | Directed by Michael Powell

Released 64 years ago (!!!), a Martin Scorsese favourite, Peeping Tom, is getting a special edition 4K release this year after being restored by The Film Foundation and BFI National Archive in association with StudioCanal.

This was a first-time watch for me, and my immediate reaction, almost from the opening scene is that for a film that was made so long ago, it has aged extremely well and I imagine it might have seemed quite shocking at the time.

That does seem to be the case as “on its initial release in 1960, Peeping Tom received a savage reception from critics who were dismayed by its controversial subject matter and the sympathy it seems to engender for its murderous protagonist.” It then remained...

‘Save Me’ Might Be the Best Show You Can Watch on Peacock Right Now
Image
[This post originally appeared as part of Recommendation Machine, IndieWire’s daily TV picks feature.]

Where to Watch ‘Save Me’: Both seasons are on Peacock, with the final five episodes of Season 2 exclusive to Peacock Premium members.

That “Save Me” is a story of a father in search of a lost child is just one of the ways that the deck seems stacked against it. It’s set in London, presented with the veneer of a crime tale: two more elements that could make it easier for the casual browser to glance over. TV isn’t exactly at a loss for shows in any of those categories.

But there are also plenty of reasons that the series took home the Best Drama Series BAFTA earlier this year, none more electrifying than the performance at its center. Lennie James (maybe familiar to most TV fans as Morgan Jones on “The Walking Dead”) stars as Nelly Rowe, a man whose...
