Ross is fantastic in the movie and, for those of you familiar with his work from Netflix's Wednesday or on stage in the West End as part of Stranger Things: The First Shadow, you can expect yet another stellar portrayal of an incredibly complex character here.

Image
Robert Downey Jr. took home his first Oscar on Sunday night… but he also took a heap of criticism for how he accepted it.

It made for an awkward moment during Sunday’s Oscars ceremony when the award for Best Supporting Actor was presented by five former winners, including last year’s champ Ke Huy Quan, who won for Everything Everywhere All at Once. Quan excitedly announced Downey as this year’s winner for his role as Lewis Strauss in Oppenheimer, and Quan held the Oscar statuette and the envelope with Downey’s name on it as Downey made his way to the stage.

Image
The Hadestown audience member with hearing loss who was reprimanded from the stage by Lillias White when the Broadway actress mistook a captioning device for a recording device is urging social media users to “please stop harassing” the Broadway star.

On Wednesday night, Coleman was in the front row of the Walter Kerr Theatre using a venue-provided captioning device during a performance of Hadestown when White, one of the stars of the musical, reprimanded her from the stage “not once but twice, at least.” The actress mistakenly thought Coleman was illegally recording the performance.

The incident has drawn considerable media attention since Coleman went public with a tearful Instagram post on Wednesday night. Hadestown producers and Jujamcyn Theaters,...

Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor in Moulin Rouge (2001)
Composers Largely Left Out Of Grammy Noms As Broadway Cast Albums Feature Reworked Oldies
Nicole Kidman and Ewan McGregor in Moulin Rouge (2001)
The Grammys took a fairly expansive sweep with this morning’s nominations for Best Musical Theater Album, The Motown sound, Rodgers & Hammerstein, the folk-rock music of Anaïs Mitchell, the reworked radio hits of Moulin Rouge! and Imogen Heap’s Harry Potter musical suites were all represented.

But four of the five nominations did not include composers, since the music was not original to the cast albums. In the case of several, the musical numbers consist largely of oldies, some reworked for contemporary settings. Anaïs Mitchell’s previous concept album for Hadestown was already Grammy-nominated upon its release in 2010.

The nominees:

Ain’t Too Proud: The Life And Times Of The Temptations is a rousing recreation of the Motown sound, focusing largely, but not exclusively, on the title group’s hits. Nominated were original cast members Saint Aubyn, Derrick Baskin, James Harkness, Jawan M. Jackson, Jeremy Pope and Ephraim Sykes and...

Kelly Macdonald
‘The Victim’ Star Kelly Macdonald Talks Short Run British Drama As BritBox Heads To ‘The Bay’ – TCA
Kelly Macdonald
Kelly Macdonald spent five years working on HBO period drama Boardwalk Empire but her latest role is a short, sharp four hours and out.

She stars in The Victim, a mini-series for the BBC and BritBox in the U.S. as Anna Dean, a Scottish mother whose nine-year old boy was murdered fifteen years ago by a 13-year old. Years later, having campaigned to be told of the killer’s new identity she is accused of revealing his new name online.

Speaking at the TCA press tour, she told Deadline, “I did Boardwalk Empire for a number of years and that was a great job and it was my first experience of revisiting a role year after year and then when that finished I was really excited because I could play different parts again. I don’t have a preference either way but if I was playing [The Victim’s] Anna Dean regularly,...

‘Wild Rose’ Review: Ballad of a Honky-Tonk Woman
It’s a standard-issue plot: A young, single, Scottish mother of two, recently paroled from prison, harbors dreams of country-music stardom in Nashville. Don’t be fooled. Wild Rose is anything but the same old underdog story. And chances are you’ll fall fast and hard for breakout star Jessie Buckley. This classically trained Irish singer and actress was a runner-up on a BBC singing competition and won roles in film (Beast) and TV (War and Peace, HBO’s Chernobyl). She’s a skyrocketing talent — and the full range of...

‘Ain’t Too Proud’s Derrick Baskin Almost Resisted The Temptation Of The Broadway Season’s Hit Musical: On Theater
Derrick Baskin
Derrick Baskin was sick of musicals when Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of The Temptations arrived in his life. He’d performed on Broadway in Memphis, The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee and The Little Mermaid, and was enjoying the change of pace that was Hulu’s Difficult People when his agent came calling with the job that could put Baskin into his first starring role. As Otis Williams, founder of the group that gave the world “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination” and one after another of the greatest songs of the 1960s and ’70s, Baskin would be a first among equals, the singer who first envisioned what The Temptations could and would be.

“I immediately tried to shut him down,” Baskin recalls in this Deadline interview. But the actor had a change of heart, and now finds himself leading what is easily the biggest hit musical of this Broadway season,...

‘We’re Bringing the Truth’: Inside the Making of the Temptations Broadway Musical
The incoming Broadway musical about the enduring music and volatile career of the Temptations features many elements associated with a prestige show. There’s a name director, an award-winning book writer, a cast whose collective resume includes stints in shows like Hamilton and Chicago, and a score overflowing with pop songs that are engrained in the culture.

Then there’s the bong.

The prop, complete with whiffs of artificial smoke, appears during a scene in which the Motown group parties together on the road later in their career. “That’s funny — that’s rock & roll!

Be More Chill
2019 Broadway spring season preview of musicals: Which will be remembered by the Tony Awards?
Be More Chill
As we’re now about halfway through the Broadway season, there are currently seven productions of musicals set to open this spring. Could we be seeing any of them contend at this year’s Tony Awards? Below, we recap the plot of each musical as well as the awards history of its author, cast, creative types, the opening, and (where applicable) closing dates.

“Be More Chill” (previews begin February 13; opens March 10)

In this musical adaptation of Ned Vizzini’s 2004 novel of the same name, Jeremy Heere is your average, nothing-special teenager at Middleborough High School in nothing-special New Jersey. That is, until the day he finds out about ‘The Squip.’ Thus begins a journey that pits Jeremy’s desire to be popular against his struggle to remain true to his authentic self.

With a book by Drama Desk nominee Joe Tracz and a score by Joe Iconis, this production is...

L.A. Theater Review: ‘Ain’t Too Proud: The Life and Times of the Temptations’
Des McAnuff at an event for Les aventures de Rocky & Bullwinkle (2000)
The less you know about the Temptations, the more you’ll get out of “Ain’t Too Proud,” a finger-snapping, hand-clapping new jukebox musical passing through Los Angeles’ Ahmanson Theatre en route to Broadway, where it is scheduled to open at the Imperial next spring. This nearly-all-black show’s got a lot going for it, between the sheer quality of the beloved R&B vocal group’s catalog and director Des McAnuff’s experience with such material (including the Four Seasons tuner “Jersey Boys” and “Summer: The Donna Summer Musical”), and yet, considering that the Temptations — who are, incredibly enough, still touring — have several SoCal playdates this September, it’s hard to compete with the thrill of seeing the actual group in concert.

Of course, we could debate all day whether today’s Temptations are still the same Temptations that broke through in the ’60s and ’70s with such hits as “My Girl,...

Temptations Musical Set For Broadway: ‘Ain’t Too Proud’ Arrives Next Spring
Des McAnuff at an event for Les aventures de Rocky & Bullwinkle (2000)
A musical about the great Temptations is headed to Broadway. Ain’t Too Proud – The Life and Times of the Temptations, directed by Des McAnuff and produced by Ira Pittelman and Tom Hulce, will begin performances at the Imperial Theatre in spring 2019.

The musical, which follows the classic Motown vocalists – and their signature dance moves – from “the streets of Detroit to the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame,” had its world premiere at Berkeley Repertory Theatre, where it became the highest grossing production in that theater’s nearly 50-year history. The musical later broke the single-week box office record at Washington D.C.’s Eisenhower Theater in the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, according to producers.

Producers describe the show as the “story of brotherhood, family, loyalty, and betrayal,” all playing out against a backdrop of civil unrest and set to Temptations classics like “My Girl,” “Just My Imagination,...

Madonna's Daughter Lourdes Leon Flaunts Her Armpit Hair on New Year's
Lourdes Leon
Madonna’s daughter Lourdes Leon flaunted her hairy armpits on social media and the Internet had mixed feelings about it.

Not long after Madonna shared the sweet New Year’s Eve photo with her daughter on Twitter and Instagram, many weighed in on the 21-year-old’s choice to let her armpit hair grow wild and free — for better and for worse.

Many cheered the look. “As long as she uses soap & deodorant it’s all good. Women have been forced to shave. By men to fit an image of what they want women to be. All women have hair there.
