#Amfad: All My Friends Are Dead Director & Star On Bringing A Gen Z Twist To A Classic Horror Story
Image
Warning: Minor spoilers for #Amfad: All My Friends Are Dead

#Amfad is a meta-horror film with social media twists and an unexpected conclusion. The movie explores classic themes through a Gen Z lens while paying homage to the films that came before. The Seven Deadly Sins Killer has a unique backstory, and both director Marcus Dunstan and star Jade Pettyjohn are ready to explore the possibility of a sequel.

#Amfad: All My Friends Are Dead is now in theaters after premiering at Tribeca Film Festival, and the horror movie is a fun, meta look at the genre from director Marcus Dunstan (who is returning to the Saw franchise for Saw XI) and screenwriters Josh Sims and Jessica Sarah Flaum. While it begins with the familiar premise of friends on a road trip heading to a remote location only to find themselves picked off one by one, the film steps out...

Wait, JoJo Siwa Made a Slasher? ‘#Amfad’ Director Marcus Dunstan and Star Jade Pettyjohn Explain
Image
Karma’s a bitch… and she loves a genre flick.

M. Night Shyamalan just put the spotlight back on viral terror with “Trap,” an escape room horror about a killer attempting to outmaneuver the cops at a concert packed with iPhones. In fewer theaters this weekend (but streaming too!) is director Marcus Dunstan’s “#Amfad: All My Friends Are Dead.” That’s another internet horror movie featuring a major pop music event — only here the murderer and their victims never make it inside the venue.

Starring ex-Nickelodeon favorite Jade Pettyjohn and none other than JoJo Siwa herself, “#Amfad” sees its masked villain ensnare a van full of wannabe internet celebs in a “Seven”-esque killing spree at a remote Airbnb. Both former kid-stars-turned-social-media-heavyweights, Pettyjohn and Siwa worked together years ago when the “Dance Moms” legend guest-starred with series regular Pettyjohn on “School of Rock.”

“I think we played potato friends?...

Jason Karman
Golden Delicious review – high school athlete’s dormant desire in queer coming-of-age tale
Jason Karman
Intended as an issue drama that also addresses intergenerational tensions, this film doesn’t manage to dig far beneath the surface

Grappling with the growing pains of an Asian-Canadian teenager, Jason Karman’s well-intentioned debut aims to tackle a multitude of big themes – but it also makes a mistake that plagues other issue-driven films where the characters take the backseat to the talking points. Split between a queer coming-of-age narrative and a portrait of intergenerational differences, Golden Delicious ends up treating both subjects with insufficient depth.

A capable performer who looks well into his late 20s, Cardi Wong plays 17-year-old protagonist Jake, a born people-pleaser who does his best to make his unyielding father George (Ryan Mah) and his bubbly girlfriend Valerie (Parmiss Sehat) happy. Such efforts are usually to Jake’s own detriment. To continue George’s broken dreams of athletic prowess, Jake dutifully practises basketball every day, even...

Golden Delicious - Jennie Kermode - 18268
Cardi Wong
Who is Jake? Played by Cardi Wong, he’s a teenager growing up in an Asian Canadian family, already caught, at least in the eyes of those around him, between two separate identities. He lives with his mother and father, but the tension between them is palpable. His father, pursuing a lost dream of his own, tries to get him to play basketball, and because he’s not very good at it (largely due to a lack of any genuine interest), he falls short of the received idea of what makes a man. Meanwhile, his girlfriend Valerie (Parmiss Sehat) wants them to lose their virginity together, but something doesn’t feel right – and he finds himself strangely drawn to the confident young gay guy who has just moved in across the road.

The fact that this film screened as part of BFI Flare 2023 will give you some clue as to what’s.
