‘Breaking Glass’ Blu-ray Review (Fun City Editions)
Image
Stars: Hazel O’Connor, Phil Daniels, Jon Finch, Jonathan Pryce, Peter-Hugo Daly, Mark Wingett | Written and Directed by Brian Gibson

Punk music burst on the scene in the mid-70s. It took the world by storm, and it made superstars and legends of groups like The Ramones, Blondie, The Patti Smith Group, The Talking Heads, The B-52’s, Suicide, Mink DeVille, The Fleshtones.

In 1980, the gritty underworld of post-punk Britain was captured on film with Breaking Glass; and this year the film is celebrating its 45th anniversary! And Fun City Editions was not going to let this epic anniversary go by without a wonderful Blu-ray release.

A rebellious young singer-songwriter Kate Crowley (Hazel O’Connor) is determined to rise to the top of the music profession. Kate’s socialist ideals are juxtaposed to her pragmatic rock manager, Danny, the streetwise hustler who discovers her and develops her into a star. The...

Image
After dying in the future, Finn and Jake want to be reincarnated for more adventures. Finn is reincarnated as Penelope in the Adventure Time comics, bridging show and comic continuity. The Adventure Time comics, though debated, are validated by Penelope's presence as a must-read for fans.

Finn and Jake's legacy doesn't end with their last canonical appearances in Adventure Time. Audiences will recall that the episode "Together Again" of Adventure Time: Distant Lands reveals that Finn and Jake have both died in the distant future and that they reunite in the afterlife. Before passing on, Finn asks Death to be reincarnated and fans can see Finn's reincarnated form in a comic published seven years earlier.

Finn's wish comes to fruition in the Adventure Time comics through a new character named Penelope, a future version of Finn, who makes her on-panel debut in Adventure Time #25 by Ryan North, Dustin Nguyen, Jess Fink,...

Kathryn Bigelow
Review: Kathryn Bigelow’s Blue Steel on Vestron Collector’s Edition Blu-ray
Kathryn Bigelow
Kathryn Bigelow’s 1990 film Blue Steel flirts with contrivance from the start. Megan Turner (Jamie Lee Curtis) joins the NYPD out of a desire to overcome an abusive childhood with a position of civic authority, then finds her job immediately threatened when a fatal shootout at a convenience store places her under internal-affairs review. To make matters more outlandish, Eugene Hunt (Ron Silver), a commodities trader whose theft of a gun from the crime scene prompted Turner’s investigation in the first place, begins to romantically pursue and eventually outright stalk her.

These are a lot of farfetched narrative strands to pile onto a B movie, but Bigelow uses this setup to deconstruct the eroticized violence of 1980s action cinema in a manner as striking and confrontational as her earlier Point Break. But if that film examined the homosocial bonds between men, Blue Steel leans into complex, insoluble gender politics...

‘Bio Zombie’ Blu-ray Review – Vinegar Syndrome Brings 1990s Hong Kong Zombie Movie Back to Life
Image
The impact of George A. Romero’s Dead movies reached far and wide. After 1968’s Night of the Living Dead defined the modern zombie as we know it, 1978’s Dawn of the Dead kick-started zombie cinema in earnest. Not only did it herald a horde of undead movies domestically, the infection spread internationally — although the outbreak took longer to reach some regions than others.

While Italy was first to strike with Lucio Fulci’s Zombie in 1979, Hong Kong wouldn’t get its first zombie movie until two decades later. A zombie film set in a mall, 1998’s Bio Zombie is a direct descendant of Dawn of the Dead. It also draws influence from the original Resident Evil game (which is featured in the film), although the zombie comedy plays more like a Return of the Living Dead sequel by way of early Kevin Smith (think Clerks or Mallrats).

Bio Zombie...

Why Queen Margrethe II of Denmark Stripped Her Grandchildren of Their Royal Titles
Image
Citing her desire to give them more control over their lives, Queen Margrethe II of Denmark has relieved four of her grandchildren of their royal titles, the royal palace revealed on Sept. 28.

"With her decision, Her Majesty The Queen wishes to create the framework for the four grandchildren to be able to shape their own lives to a much greater extent without being limited by the special considerations and duties that a formal affiliation with the Royal House of Denmark as an institution involves," the palace's statement read.

The queen originally bestowed royal titles on all of her grandchildren, per the palace's statement. As of today, Margrethe's second son Joachim's children will no longer be referred to as prince and princess and "his/her highness." This means that Nikolai, 23, and Felix, 20, whom he shares with his first wife, Alexandra, Countess of Frederiksborg, and his children with current wife Princess Marie - Henrik,...

I Start Counting

Adapted from the 1966 novel of the same name by Audrey Erskine Lindop, I Start Counting is a welcome relic of its era: it is distinctively late-1960s in its fashions and characterizations, and it is decidedly British in its affectations, despite harboring a rather risque subject matter.

I Wake Up Screaming - Jennie Kermode - 16074
If you've ever been involved in post-production on a film, you'll know that there's a moment during the early stages of editing when one cannot help but be aware that one is looking at multiple stories, not just one - that fragments of the same material can be rearranged to create very different narratives and very different moods. Chris O'Neill's experimental reworking of found footage from an old, little-seen horror film stays within genre but brings this glorious uncertainty to light, highlighting the fact that film is a fractal medium and that the only real truths to be found within it are those we choose to construct.

It begins with a man screaming. This being what it is, there's a lot of screaming, but you won't hear it; until the very end, when a brief snippet of wisdom is shared, all you'll hear is Gabbie Bam Bam's vibrant electronic soundtrack,...

And as an added bonus, a solo photo of Madeleine was included in honor of her 36th birthday, which was on June 10.

Madeleine and Chris welcomed Adrienne into the world back in March. The little one joins the couple's other kids, Princess Leonore, 4, and Prince Nicolas, 2, however,...
