Tarot Cast & Character Guide
Image
The movie Tarot features a group of college friends being hunted by a deck of tarot cards. Despite negative reviews, Tarot surpassed its budget. The actors bring tension and scare to the film, with notable performances by Harriet Slater, Adain Bradley, Jacob Batalon, and others in key roles.

The scares and drama of Tarot follow a group of college friends who are perfectly brought to life by their actors. The movie is about seven friends being hunted and killed by a deck of tarot cards, which they use against their better judgment. The cast itself is relatively small, and by Tarot's ending, several deaths and shocking twists have happened.

Though reviews of Tarot claim the characters are thin, the cast is ultimately able to execute the film effectively to create tense moments and scares. Though it has many negative ratings, Tarot was able to quintuple its budget, in part because of the cast's performances.

This 2024 underrated horror movie is now on Netflix and it deserves all the love
Image
Where are all my horror fans? Netflix recently added 10 horror films to its platform on the first of August. While I recommend checking out each new release, the one that should be at the top of your watchlist is the 2024 supernatural horror film Tarot. This movie is criminally underrated, in my opinion, when it really deserves all the love and attention.

Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg (The Expendables 4) wrote and directed Tarot, making it their feature film directorial debuts. Like most movies nowadays, Tarot is based on another piece of work. It's based on Nicholas Adams' 1992 novel Horrorscope. Although panned by critics, the horror flick still managed to be a box-office success, grossing $49 million worldwide against a budget of $8 million.

Here's how I see it. It's okay to read critic reviews but don't let what someone else has said and their opinions deter you from watching a movie. Who knows,...

Recent Sleeper Hit Horror Film Lands on Netflix After Box Office Success

Released in theaters on May 3, 2024, Tarot was a sleeper hit at the box office. Now, as of Aug. 1, the horror movie is available for subscribers to stream on Netflix.

With a low budget of around $8 million, the film grossed $49 million worldwide, making Tarot a big financial success. Its haul of nearly $50 million at the global box office is higher than other notable horror films of recent years like Abigail ($42 million), Thanksgiving ($46 million), and Barbarian ($45 million). Tarot was released on DVD and Blu-ray in July for the physical media collectors, and its arrival on Netflix will see the movie reach a wider audience following its successful run in theaters.

After a successful box office run, Sony’s Screen Gems’ Tarot card-themed movie Tarot (formerly titled Horrorscope) is heading to streaming next month.

Magicians, Devils & Death: The Cards Featured in ‘Tarot’ and What They Mean
Image
Warning: The following contains spoilers for Tarot.

Tarot is one of the oldest and most popular methods of divination. A form of cartomancy, it’s the practice of connecting with ancestors, spirit guides, or hidden aspects of the self by drawing cards and interpreting their hidden meanings. British occultist Pamela Colman Smith illustrated the iconic Rider-Waite-Smith deck which remains the standard representation of each card and forms the basis of most tarot analysis today. But there are endless interpretations of the 78-card structure. Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg’s Tarot imagines a similar deck with the power to bring a reading’s final outcome to bloody life. Designed by a witch who infused the deck with her dying blood, this grisly stack contains malevolent variations of tarot’s most frightening faces.

Haley (Harriet Slater) and her friends stumble upon the deck while searching for alcohol in a rented house. A self-taught tarot reader,...

New Horror Film Becomes Big Box Office Success Despite Harsh Reviews
Image
The new horror movie Tarot did not have the warmest reception with critics upon release, to say the least. At Rotten Tomatoes, the film has a low approval rating of 21 percent, but that doesn't mean the horror flick was not a success.

Via The Numbers, Tarot will be rounding out the weekend with $3.4 million earned at the domestic box office, landing in the No. 4 spot with its second weekend in theaters. That brings the film up to more than $12 earned domestically, and counting in $8.2 million from overseas ticket sales, Tarot has surpassed $20.2 million worldwide. Given the low budget of the film, which was made for around $8 million, Tarot can be seen as a big financial success by earning so much more in less than two weeks in theaters.

New Horror Movie With 20% Rt Score Passes Huge Domestic Milestone In Week 2
Image
Tarot is expected to end the week with $11.7 million at the domestic box office. Despite its excellent box office returns, Tarot has struggled to earn the respect of critics. Tarot earned a 20% Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer score.

Tarot is thriving at the box office, but critics still have little love for the newly-released horror. Focusing on a group of college students, the movie focuses on their terrifying adventure as they each play with a cursed Tarot deck. Every member of the group is targeted by their own Tarot reading, and they are left desperately fighting to survive. It was released on May 3 and had a budget of $8 million.

According to a report by Deadline, Tarot is already near the point of profitability. With a total domestic take of $3.2 million on the weekend, it will finish this weekend having passed the $10 million domestic milestone. It will have approximately $11.7 million at the box office,...

New Horror Movie Tarot Looks Like A Box Office Bomb – But It Could Be A Sneaky Hit
Image
There has been much pessimism floating around regarding this past weekend's box office. I myself have tossed some of that pessimism into the void. Much of that has to do with the fact that the summer movie season kicked off with "The Fall Guy" opening to a wildly disappointing $28.5 million, marking the worst start to summer in more than 20 years. Far less ink has been spilled regarding Sony's new horror movie "Tarot," which also opened over the weekend and snuck into the top five on the domestic charts with a $6.5 million debut. At first glance, it's not a good look for a movie from a major studio opening on more than 3,100 screens across North America. However, this might actually end up being a sneaky little hit.

"Tarot" also pulled in $3.7 million internationally, giving it a $10.2 million global start. Again, that number isn't going to break any records. It's not...

Screen Gems Horror Movie ‘Tarot’ Debuts With $10 Million Worldwide
Image
Sony’s Screen Gems brought horror back to the box office with the Tarot card-themed movie Tarot (formerly titled Horrorscope) over the weekend. The film debuted in theaters nationwide on Thursday, May 2, but how did it stack up against other new releases for the genre this year?

Directed by Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg, Tarot debuted in the #4 spot on the domestic box office charts, scaring up $6.5 million and giving it the third lowest opening for a wide release horror movie at the box office here in 2024 so far. For the sake of comparison, here are the domestic opening weekend numbers for this year’s big screen horror offerings…

Night Swim – $11.7 million Abigail – $10.2 million Imaginary – $9.9 million The First Omen – $8.3 million Tarot – $6.5 million Immaculate – $5.3 million Lisa Frankenstein – $3.6 million

Worldwide, Tarot‘s box office total sits at $10.2 million. The good news for Screen Gems is that the horror movie’s reported production budget was just $8 million,...

‘Tarot’ Review: Spine-Snapping Melodrama Does Haunted Party Games Proud
Image
A Pisces, a Taurus, a Capricorn, a Leo, a Virgo, and an Aquarius walk into a rented mansion for their Libra friend’s birthday party. The seven college kids soon run out of booze, go poking around in places they shouldn’t, and summon a fate worse than death when they find a mysterious deck of cards harboring a hidden evil. Title card: “Tarot.” All signs… point to yikes.

Written and directed by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, Screen Gems’ latest scary movie is willfully ridiculous. It’s also the most original take on the haunted party game since last year’s well-loved “Talk to Me” with its own franchising potential as a supernatural series. If open-minded audiences buy into this transparently trendy gimmick and its melodramatic narrative execution, what feels like a spiritual “Final Destination” spinoff — told by way of an Urban Outfitters’ small gifts display — could very well...

Tarot Review | Spider-Man's Jacob Batalon Saves This PG-13 Horror Movie
Image
The horror movie Tarot doesn't understand the nature of its subject and has forgettable characters, but the engaging performance from Jacob Batalon adds humor and relatability. The jump scares are surprisingly effective thanks to good editing, and the concept of the tarot cards as horror characters is cool. The film lacks true horror intensity thanks to its PG-13 rating, and it relies on the usual horror tropes.

A box office joyride may not be in the cards for Tarot. The new horror film from co-directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg suffers from an overuse of horror tropes and disposable characters. And there arent that many characters in the film. Its saving grace is Jacob Batalon, an actor who is clearly having a moment. The fun sidekick from the Spider-Man films and the lead in Syfys Reginald the Vampire adds levity to the production, which, despite its inviting premise, never consistently...

Tarot Review: Thin Characters & Intermittent Frights Make For A Dull Horror Movie Experience
Image
Tarot features a group of college friends fighting against fateful tarot card predictions before time runs out. Some inventive kills are present in Tarot, but the scares wear thin due to a lack of surprises and easily predictable scares. Despite some clever moments and a solidly clever ending, Tarot falls flat due to thin character development, dull plot, and lack of major scares.

At first glance, the premise for the new horror film Tarot, from directors Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg, reads like a combination of tropes derived from other movies in the genre. A group of friends indulge in a familiar game/ritual and soon find themselves getting picked off one by one, unable to avoid their fate (Final Destination). Of course, when it comes to horror, sometimes originality isn't necessary; what's key are the scares, and how everything unfolds. Unfortunately, Tarot falls flat in the former category, and the latter isn't particularly engaging.

Tarot Review: A Scary Concept Cannot Overcome a Bad Story
Image
Horror movies can grow from any place. That’s one of the most exciting aspects of the genre – any idea can become scary as hell in the right hands. With flicks like Ouija: Origin of Evil and Annabelle: Creation surprising audiences, it’s not unreasonable to find great hits from even thin concepts. Tarot, the latest Sony and Screen Gems horror film, seeks to replicate this success. Unfortunately, despite great creature designs, Tarot stumbles over its own feet at every opportunity. The result is not only frustrating but an absolute slog.

Tarot Plot

During a weekend in the Catskills, a group of young college students celebrate Elsie’s (Larsen Thompson) birthday. After the group runs out of alcohol, they stumble upon a deck of tarot cards. Haley (Harriet Slater) uses a combination of horoscopes and Tarot to read their futures. Paxton (Jacob Batalon), Paige (Avantika), Grant (Adain Bradley), Madelyn (Humberly González...

Screaming, Stunts and Playing Dead: ‘Tarot’ Star Larsen Thompson Reveals the Six On-Set Secrets Every Horror Actor Must Know
Image
“Tarot” has the makings of a classic sleepover horror movie, fine-tuned for an astrology-obsessed Gen Z. When a group of friends accidentally read their horoscopes with the help of a cursed set of Tarot cards, scary symbols like “The Magician” and “The High Priestess” come to life and start haunting the group. Blending elements of classic supernatural slashers and the “Final Destination” movies, the film stars a game group of twentysomethings, including Harriet Slater, Jacob Batalon and Larsen Thompson.

Here, Thompson, who has also appeared in spooky projects such as the 2018 film “Bloodline” and the 2022 series “The Midnight Club,” reveals the tricks of the trade for surviving as an actor on the set of a horror film.

1) How to play dead

A lot of that, of course, is holding your breath. For me, the trick has always been “belly breathing.” Most of my work is leading up to when I need to hold my breath,...

‘Tarot’ Review: A Cursed Card Game Leaves No Horror Cliché Unturned
Image
Set in a world where every door creaks and there isn’t a single well-lit location, “Tarot” is little more than a clearinghouse of horror clichés.

Co-written, directed and executive produced by Spenser Cohen and Anna Halberg (the podcast series “Classified”), the supernatural thriller repeatedly leverages the genre’s laziest mood-setting and suspense-building devices to keep its audience on the edge of their seats. But even featuring a moderately charming ensemble led by “Spider-Man: Homecoming” breakout Jacob Batalon, the film’s PG-13 rating — and lack of virtually any characters other than its doomed protagonists — severely limits the efficacy of those techniques and tropes even when they’re deployed skillfully.

Batalon plays Paxton, the wisecracker among a studiously diverse college-age friend group that rents a remote mansion to celebrate the birthday of Elise (Larsen Thompson). Scouring their rental for booze, the group foolishly breaks into a room marked “Keep Out,” where...

‘Tarot’ Review – The Monsters Shine in Simple Gateway Horror Movie
Image
Writers/Directors Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg keep it simple with the PG-13 horror movie Tarot. Instead of a cold open to hook audiences on the horror, Tarot launches straight into introducing the group of seven friends partaking in a party weekend at an isolated manor.

It’s there that they dabble with things they shouldn’t, setting in motion a curse that will pick them off one by one, slasher style. With an equal group of monsters to match, Tarot has the makings of a breezy gateway horror movie perfect for sleepovers, though it’s undermined by surface-level characters and storytelling.

The moment the beer runs dry, forcing the friends to seek entertainment elsewhere, birthday girl Elise (Larsen Thompson) insists that Haley (Harriet Slater) puts her tarot knowledge to good use when they find a mysterious deck within the house. Haley warns that it’s extremely bad luck to borrow...

‘Tarot’ Filmmakers Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg on Practical Creature Effects and ‘Insidious’ Inspirations
Image
An evil curse gets awakened in Screen Gems horror movie Tarot when a group of friends recklessly ignore a sacred rule: never use someone else’s deck. Writers/Directors Spenser Cohen & Anna Halberg unleash a variety of Tarot card-inspired entities on the group through practical effects, and create an unexpected connection to Insidious along the way.

The film comes exclusively to movie theaters on May 3, 2024.

Bloody Disgusting spoke with Cohen and Halberg ahead of Tarot‘s release, where the pair shared more about the film’s practical effects-driven horrors and revealed how Tarot drew from Insidious in a specific way.

To start, though, the filmmakers reveal just how closely their horror movie sticks to the source novel Horrorscope by Nicholas Adams. The short answer is, well, it doesn’t at all!

Cohen explains, “It’s so different. We never even read the book and took nothing from the book. The only thing,...
