Mark Walhberg's Matrix Copycat With 17% Rt Score Finds Success on Streaming 4 Years Later
Image
Mark Wahlberg is an extremely successful action star, whose films as a leading actor have grossed over $5.4 billion worldwide. However, not every project has been a hit.

Wahlberg's 2021 sci-fi film Infinite was not successful and became one of his lowest-rated films. The project was a collaboration with Antoine Fuqua and Chiwetel Ejiofor. However, as Infinite was unfavorably compared to The Matrix, it failed to impress. Fortunately, the movie is currently experiencing new success on Netflix, Tudum reveals.

Infinite has been a hit on streaming despite its poor reviews. The film debuted in eighth place in the Top 10 global charts on Netflix for the week between June 23 and June 19. It received 3.9 million views and 6.9 million hours viewed. The sci-fi flick also entered the Top 10 in 30 countries over the same period. However, the film is not available to stream on Netflix in the U.S., but can be found on Prime Video.

This Mark Wahlberg Mind-Bender Was Offloaded by Its Studio, but Now It’s a Streaming Hit
Image
While Adam Sandler was arguably ahead of the curve in pivoting to streaming when he discovered that his audience would probably stop making trips to theaters to watch his comedies, Mark Wahlberg's transition hasn't been as smooth. Wahlberg was consistently delivering hit films not that long ago, but his streaming era has been marked by one underwhelming release after another. Among his least-remembered recent titles is the mind-bending science-fiction film Infinite, which was a part of the Paramount slate that was offloaded by the studio in the early days of the pandemic. The movie is now witnessing a resurgence on Netflix, four years after its initial release.

This was when the studio sold off Coming 2 America and The Tomorrow War to Prime Video, and Alex Garland's Annihilation to Netflix. Infinite, directed by Antoine Fuqua, debuted on Paramount+ and earned terrible reviews. It currently holds a 17% score on the aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes,...

‘This Time Next Year’ Author Sophie Cousens Talks Adapting Book To Script For Roku Rom-Com With “Something A Little Bit More To Say”
Image
For This Time Next Year author Sophie Cousens’ first go at adapting one of her books into a film, the most challenging part was capturing the internal dialogue of her “spiky” protagonist” Minnie Cooper (Sophie Cookson).

The story, set over multiple New Year’s Eves and New Year’s Days, follows Minnie as she meets and confronts her nemesis from birth — Quinn Hamilton (Lucien Laviscount), who she believes stole the name she would have had if she were the first baby born on January 1, 1990 and not him.

“There’s so much comedy in the book that comes from Minnie’s internal monologue, and I think that as a writer, that was one of the hardest things to show — what she’s thinking and her humor,” Cousens told Deadline in an interview following the film’s release on Roku. “When I wrote the book, I always imagined it as a film in my head.

“As I remember it, the script came through, and I gave it a read, and I was like, ‘Yo, this is this is really cool,’ and I reached out to my friends of mine, and I was like, ‘Have you read this book?’ And they lost the shit.

Game of Thrones (2011)
Stockholm Bloodbath review – like Game of Thrones scripted by Guy Ritchie
Game of Thrones (2011)
Based on a real mass killing, this 16th-century tale of backstabbing and beheadings is a clunker with a laddish edge

‘A great deal of this actually happened,” reads the title card at the start of this action-packed historical epic. Possibly. But it’s unlikely that anyone actually said these words. Like an episode of Game of Thrones scripted by Guy Ritchie, there is a laddish finesse to the dialogue in this 16th-century tale of backstabbing and beheadings. “That sounds like a load of bollocks,” splutters the Danish king Christian II to an adviser in one scene. The actors are mostly Danes and Swedes speaking lines in English, plus a few Brits with a slight Scandi tinge to their accents.

The film is based on real events: the mass killing of Swedish nobles in 1520, ordered by Danish king Christian II (Claes Bang). The script gives history a revisionist twist or two:...

Stockholm Bloodbath Review: Revenge, Rage, and Historical Mayhem
Image
“Stockholm Bloodbath” is a brave retelling of a dark part of Scandinavian history in the turbulent world of historical action movies. The movie, directed by Mikael Håfström, takes viewers into the harsh world of Sweden in the 1600s, turning a famous historical massacre into a shocking, genre-bending movie experience.

The movie takes place in 1520 and is based on the real-life Stockholm Bloodbath when Danish King Christian II killed many Swedish lords. That being said, this isn’t your average historical thriller. Håfström tells a crazy, stylized story that purposely isn’t very true to history. This makes the movie more like a humorous historical action movie like “Inglourious Basterds” than a typical period piece.

The movie takes a risky approach by combining exploitation film methods with modern storytelling methods. Claes Bang as King Christian II, Sophie Cookson, and Alba August are among the many famous actors in the show. They...

Mark Wahlbergs Rotten Action Thriller Infinite Reaches #1 Spot on Prime Video
Image
A panned action thriller starring Mark Wahlberg has climbed the charts on Prime Video, reaching all the way to the tippy top #1 spot. Titled Infinite, the movie was met with largely scathing reviews from critics at the time, but this no-nonsense tale of a mysterious group who have mastered the art of reincarnation, and the decades of learning of fighting skills that come with it, could be just what you need amid the drama of the real world.

Loosely adapted from D. Eric Maikranz's 2009 novel "The Reincarnationist Papers," Infinite finds Mark Wahlberg as Evan McCauley, a man with skills he has never learned and memories of places he has never visited haunt his daily life. Self-medicated and on the brink of a mental breakdown, Evan is sought by a secret group that call themselves "Infinites," revealing to him that his memories may be real-but they are from multiple past lives.

Mark Wahlberg's Trending 2021 Sci-Fi Movie Was Supposed To Redeem His 16-Year-Old M. Night Shyamalan Flop
Image
The science fiction film Infinite, starring Mark Wahlberg, is trending on Prime Video three years after releasing on Paramount+. Reviews for Infinite were not kind when it released on Paramount's streaming service in 2021. Infinite, which also stars Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sophie Cookson and Jason Mantzoukas, holds a 17% on Rotten Tomatoes. The film follows Evan McCauley, who is haunted by memories of places he's never visited, until he discovers a secret society of "Infinites." Evan teams up with the group to hone his skills and stop a madman in the Antoine Fuqua-directed science fiction movie.

While Infinite did not receive strong reviews upon its release, finding a second life as a trending movie on Prime Video is a silver-lining for the film. However, this doesn't change the fact that Mark Wahlberg has terrible luck when it comes to science fiction movies. While Wahlberg has always had major successes in the action genre,...

Mark Wahlbergs Sci-Fi Action Movie With 17% Rt Score Finds New Life On Streaming 3 Years Later
Image
Despite its initial critical and commercial failure, Infinite has found a new life on Prime Video three years after its release. The sci-fi action movie followed Evan McCauley (Mark Wahlberg), a man haunted by memories of places he's never visited, who joins forces with a group of reborn warriors to stop a madman from destroying the endless cycle of life and reincarnation. Based on D. Eric Maikranz' The Reincarnationist Papers novel, Infinite's cast also included Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sophie Cookson and Jason Mantzoukas, among others.

With some three years gone since the movie premiered on Paramount+, Infinite is now climbing the charts of Prime Video. At the time of writing, the Wahlberg-led sci-fi action movie sits in the No. 2 spot on the streamer's Top 10, only being surpassed by the Kate Beckinsale-led action-thriller Canary Black, which has similarly been poorly received by critics and audiences, though has yet to garner...

Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore, and Jessica Biel in Next (2007)
This Time Next Year review – satisfyingly slick by-the-numbers romcom
Nicolas Cage, Julianne Moore, and Jessica Biel in Next (2007)
From the love/hate setup and the must-dump boyfriend to the kooky mate and frantic finale this well-crafted love story hits all the classic romcom beats, just don’t expect fireworks

Based on Sophie Cousens’ novel of the same name, and adapted for the screen by the author, this opens with a twinkly tourism-office-style visit-London-for-the-festive-season montage that lets us know from the off that the film will be playing by 1990s romcom rules. You know the sort of thing: a declaration of love delivered against a pressing deadline ideally involving a change of location. As This Time Next year progresses, it quickly becomes apparent that said rules have been thoroughly studied, to mostly satisfying effect, as from the get-go the story hits the expected beats. You’ve got heroine Minnie’s initial antagonism towards her love-match Quinn, a loser boyfriend who must first be seen through and ditched, and of...

AFM: Veteran Rom-Com Editor Nick Moore on ‘This Time Next Year,’ His First as Director
Image
While romantic-comedy lovers may not know his name, Nick Moore has been an absolutely crucial cog in many films considered absolute classics of the genre. The editor, whose career in the cutting room dates back to the early 80s (his second credit is Empire of the Sun, followed by Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade), is best known in the industry for his work on the likes of Notting Hill, About a Boy and Love Actually, helping splice practically back-to-back hits for Working Title and make Hugh Grant the 1990s poster boy for foppishly charming Brits.

Moore has turned director for a handful of films already, but with This Time Next Year — screening at the American Film Market, where Protagonist are handling sales — he’s helming his first ever rom-com himself, asserting he was brought on board to “give it that Working Title touch”.

Karla-Simone Spence attends Festa del Cinema di Roma 2024 for The Count of Monte Cristo
The Confessions Of Frannie Langton Review: Gothic Romance With A Twist
Karla-Simone Spence attends Festa del Cinema di Roma 2024 for The Count of Monte Cristo
On the surface, The Confessions of Frannie Langton feels like a traditional British gothic drama.

However, like its heroine, there is so much going on underneath -- layers of richness and complexity that reveal themselves gradually.

The show doesn’t shy away from its darkest themes, and the strongest aspect (though there are many) is the deeply authentic voice of the main character.

Sara Collins, the author of the novel on which the show is based, was born in Jamaica and attended boarding school in London.

Her unique experience grounds Frannie and her story in a way that feels dangerously real. Collins was intrinsically involved in creating and writing this show, helping to ensure that Frannie’s story remained solid and unwavering.

It is vital to have a leading lady who can carry the weight of this extraordinary story. Luckily, Karla-Simone Spence is more than up to the task.

Her...

Terence Davies Sets Cast for The Post Office Girl, Shooting this Summer
Jack Lowden in Les carnets de Siegfried (2021)
Following up one of last year’s finest (and most overlooked) films, Benediction, Terence Davies has been prepping his next project for some time. First announcing it two years ago, the English director has written an adaptation of Stefan Zweig’s novel The Post Office Girl, published posthumously in 1982. One of Wes Anderson’s inspirations for The Grand Budapest Hotel, the book is set in post-wwi and follows a female post-office clerk who lives outside Vienna.

Last year the director told us, “We’ve been on this three years now. The script is written and we’re raising the money. But, you know, it will be a co-production, which means if one domino does fall, then everything collapses. It’s the same thing. You know, it took six years to get Benediction onto the screen, and that’s a long time. It’s a long time. And you begin to...

The Confessions of Frannie Langton Review: Quality Drama with Mystery and Heart
Image
Itvx is the new name for ITV Hub, and with that name change, we get a whole new batch of streaming content. The Confessions of Frannie Langton, an adaptation of Sara Collins’ 2019 novel of the same name, tells the tragic story of a former slave who is sent from Jamaica to London and ends up working for a wealthy couple, where she falls in love with her mistress.

Set in Georgian London, the show is a beautiful, painful and queer story. It’s a British period drama which puts a Black woman at the helm – while defying the stereotypical former slave figure often painted in period dramas. Frannie (Karla-Simone Spence) is educated, well-read and outspoken, but more importantly, she has the ability to fall in love.

When we meet Frannie , she is being dragged from her lover’s bed and arrested for the murder of the Benhams – her master and...
