Paramount Writers Mentoring Program Entire Class Lands Jobs Within Week of Strike Ending

Within a week of the 146-day Writers Guild of America strike ending, all seven writers in the Paramount Writers Mentoring Program for 2022-2023 have landed jobs.

“Now that writers’ rooms have resumed, our Paramount Writers Mentoring Program has demonstrated remarkable success, with all seven 2022-2023 season participants securing staff positions in a matter of days. This achievement highlights the invaluable support, guidance and exposure the Mentoring Program provides to emerging writers,” said Marva Smalls, executive vice president and global head of inclusion at Paramount, in a statement. “We’re incredibly excited for their future prospects and remain ever committed to diversity and inclusion in the television industry.”

Paramount Global Announces Participants For 2022-2023 Writers Mentoring Program

Paramount Global has announced the seven writers who will be participating Writers Mentoring Program for 2023-2023. Currently in its 19th year and helmed by the Paramount Office of Global Inclusion, the eight-month program provides mentorships, access and opportunity for writers.

For 16 weeks, the writers will attend small workshop-style meetings with showrunners, executive producers, agents, managers, and development and current executives to gain a better understanding of how the business works from many different perspectives.

Each of the writers are paired with an executive from the Paramount studio brands including Paramount Television Studios, CBS Studios and CBS Television Network with whom they will meet on a regular basis to discuss their work and receive creative feedback on their material, advice and support in furthering their career.

SXSW Free Short Film Streaming Event #SupporttheShorts Returns

Oscilloscope Laboratories will team up with Mailchimp again this year for the free streaming event #SupportTheShorts, showcasing a variety of short films from the SXSW Film Festival on the streaming platform Mailchimp Presents. The Support the Shorts initiative was launched last year when SXSW was canceled because of the pandemic, causing short filmmakers to miss out on having their work seen by such a large audience.

While SXSW returned this year with an online event, the decision was made to continue with Support the Shorts to keep many of the event's short films in the spotlight. The short film event also will come with a new set of awards to recognize the titles that will be playing for free for people all around the world to see.

Oscilloscope Laboratories To Showcase SXSW Short Films With Return Of #SupportTheShorts Streaming Event

Oscilloscope Laboratories is teaming with Mailchimp once again for #SupportTheShorts, a free streaming event featuring a selection of short films from the SXSW Film Festival on the global streaming platform Mailchimp Presents.

#SupportTheShorts launched last year when SXSW was canceled due to Covid-19 and hundreds of short filmmakers lost the opportunity for their work to be seen. To remedy this, Mailchimp partnered with Oscilloscope to give these short films and their creators a digital home where their work could be enjoyed from anywhere.

This year’s online edition of SXSW brings back the platform for filmmakers to showcase their art at the festival and to a broader audience. In addition to the film licensing, Mailchimp and Oscilloscope supplied hundreds of SXSW festival badges to 18 organizations committed to boosting opportunities for underrepresented communities in the film industry.

SXSW: ‘Alice’, ‘For Sama’ Among Feature Film Grand Jury Award Winners

The SXSW Film Festival unveiled the 2019 Jury and Special Award winners for 26th edition of the fest at Austin’s Paramount Theater with Josephine Mackerras-directed drama Alice winning in the Narrative Feature Competition and Waad al-Kateab & Edward Watts’s For Sama taking top honors for the Documentary Feature Competition. Short films and other juried sections, including Film Design Awards were also presented.

Alice follows the titular character, a happy and perfect wife and mother whose life is turned upside down when she discovers her husband is living a secret life. She is left abandoned, financially ruined but fights back as she goes on a journey of self-discovery. For Sama tells the epic story of a young woman’s journey through love, war and motherhood across five years of the uprising in Aleppo, Syria.

The SXSW Film Festival has announced the winners of the its Narrative and Documentary Competitions. The winners were unveiled during a ceremony at Austin’s Paramount Theater on Tuesday, alongside several other prizes for features and shorts from across the the SXSW lineup.

Among this year’s big Narrative Feature entries is Grand Jury winner “Alice,” Josephine Mackerras’ story of a woman’s choice to become a sex worker to support her husband and child. “For Sama,” this year’s Documentary Feature winner, follows a Syrian filmmaker as she starts a family amidst the backdrop of the country’s ongoing political turmoil.

Previous SXSW winners include Lena Dunham’s “Tiny Furniture” and “Marwencol.” Last year, the top prizes went to “Thunder Road” and “People’s Republic of Desire.”
