Netflix’s rollout strategy for returning series has sparked plenty of debate over the years, and those lengthy hiatuses between seasons have been a topic of discussion.

They’re not going anywhere.

The teen drama returns Thursday, August 28, 2025, with 10 brand-new episodes dropping at once — no surprise there.

Netflix still lives and dies by the binge model, even as other streamers experiment with weekly drops to stay in the conversation longer.

Why Steven Spielberg Ditched Jaws 2 & The Surprising Prequel Pitch He Left Behind
Image
Steven Spielberg Ditched Jaws 2 (Photo Credit – Wikipedia)

Steven Spielberg changed cinema forever when Jaws hit theaters in 1975. It turned beach trips into second thoughts for millions and gave birth to what we now call the summer blockbuster. Now, with its 50th anniversary this year, people are once again diving into the film, not just the original but the sequels too.

Why Jaws 2 Was Made Without Steven Spielberg

Among the sequels, Jaws 2 stands out. It is not because it was great, but because it’s the least bad. It brought back Roy Scheider’s Chief Brody, another shark, and a new director, Jeannot Szwarc. However, the most famous name from the first film was missing as Steven Spielberg didn’t return, and there’s a lot more behind that than some simple refusal.

The iconic director became a force in Hollywood when Jaws exploded at the box office and took home Oscars.

Netflix released the first batch of photos from the upcoming second season, but hasn’t announced a confirmed premiere date. All the streamer is promising is that season two will debut this summer.

The Academy Egregiously Snubbed Jaws In These Major Oscar Categories
Image
As we continue to celebrate the 50th anniversary of "Jaws," cinema enthusiasts everywhere can wax poetic about the film's impact as the godfather of the modern blockbuster. The 1975 big screen adaptation of Peter Benchley's novel of the same name not only captivated audiences and frightened them from visiting the beach that summer, but it also served as the ultimate calling card for the filmmaker who would be king: Steven Spielberg. After making his feature-length debut with his television film "Duel" and his theatrical debut with "The Sugarland Express," Spielberg ventured into uncharted waters with "Jaws," which was a notoriously difficult production for him.

"Jaws" was a cultural juggernaut, becoming the highest-grossing film ever at the time of its release (a record that Spielberg himself would break two more times with "E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial" and "Jurassic Park"). Adjusted for ticket price inflation, it is the 7th highest-grossing film in history,...

The James Bond Easter Egg You Probably Never Noticed In Steven Spielberg's Jaws
Image
Like many boys growing up in the 1950s and early 1960s, Steven Spielberg loved James Bond, the debonair, globe-trotting spy for Her Majesty's Secret Service, and the films starring the dashing Sean Connery. Spielberg told IndieWire that " the only franchise I cared about and wanted to be part of was James Bond," and it was his "pie-in-the-sky dream to make a little movie that would get some notoriety, and then [Bond producer] Cubby Broccoli would call me and ask me to direct the next James Bond picture."

In his early work, Steven Spielberg got to flex his action and thriller genre muscles for the television series "Columbo," which had twisty plots, and his television movie "Duel," which had high-stakes car chases. These were the ideal showcases of his abilities to helm a James Bond movie, but it still wasn't enough to hear from Broccoli. Instead, it was Richard D. Zanuck and David Brown...

Jaws at 50: 15 Outrageous Stories Behind Steven Spielberg’s Greatest Movie Ever Made
Image
It’s Jaws’ 50th birthday—half a century ago, Steven Spielberg’s legendary shark flick swam into theaters, terrified beachgoers, and basically invented the idea of “summer blockbuster”. Now, as Jaws turns the big 5-0, fans everywhere are celebrating this thrilling classic that almost made us stay away from the ocean forever.

But here’s the thing, while we all remember the iconic music and that massive mechanical shark—the real jaw-dropping deal was happening behind the scenes. So, in honor of this milestone, we’re diving deep into 15 outrageous stories behind Steven Spielberg’s greatest movie ever made.

1. Steven Spielberg wasn’t the first choice for Jaws

Before Steven Spielberg jumped into the deep end, Universal Studios eyed The Culpepper Cattle Co. director, Dick Richards, as the initial choice. But unfortunately, Richards was sacked when he kept getting confused between the shark and a whale, in studio meetings. So,...

“Eviscerate it!”: Steven Spielberg’s Untold Story Behind ‘Jaws’ as Movie Celebrates 50th Anniversary
Image
Jaws is celebrating its 50th anniversary in 2025, but while fans remember the iconic shark terrorizing Amity Island, few know that the making of this classic was a horror story of its own. Long before Jaws became a pop culture phenomenon and a torch bearer of Hollywood blockbusters, Steven Spielberg was a young director caught in a storm of production nightmares

Behind the scenes, Steven Spielberg was battling tight deadlines, a cranky mechanical shark, and total chaos on set. On top of that, he was just not satisfied with the script. So Spielberg told the screenwriter to “eviscerate it”. That’s how chaotic and anxiety-inducing things were getting on set. So, as we celebrate Jaws, let’s dive into the jaw-dropping story of how it was made.

Universal wanted Jaws fast-tracked and it nearly sank the whole production

It all started when Peter Benchley’s novel Jaws became an instant bestseller...

‘Jaws’ at 50: How Spielberg’s movie changes ‘horrified’ wife of novel writer Peter Benchley
Image
A little over a year before Jaws opened in theaters and forever changed the next 50 years of cinema, it was a best-selling debut novel by author Peter Benchley.

Producers Richard Zanuck and David Brown, who had acquired the rights to Jaws before its publication, turned to Benchley for the first few drafts of the screenplay, but it was ultimately something that, according to his wife, Wendy Benchley, was "hard for him."

"That is a completely different kind of writing," she tells Gold Derby ahead of the National Geographic documentary Jaws @ 50: The Definitive Inside Story.

The producers moved on from Benchley after three drafts, bringing on a series of writers — including the film's one other credited scribe Carl Gottlieb — to shape the story of Chief Martin Brody and a man-eating shark into something the young director Steven Spielberg could eventually shoot.

Over the course of many rewrites, much of...

How Steven Spielberg’s ‘Jaws’ Endured a Hellish Production to Become Hollywood’s First Summer Blockbuster
Image
“The shark’s not working.”

For weeks, the cast and crew of “Jaws” kept hearing the same four words over their walkie-talkies while shooting the film’s climactic ocean battle. That familiar message terrified Steven Spielberg, 27 years old at the time, with only one theatrical feature to his name. If one of the production’s three animatronic great whites broke down, it could mean another wasted day. All the setbacks put the film more than 100 days behind schedule and doubled its budget to $8 million.

“We didn’t know how they were ever going to finish this movie,” remembers Jeffrey Kramer, who played a sheriff’s deputy in the film. “There were rumors all around the set that the studio was going to shut us down.”

Spielberg, who had been entrusted with turning Peter Benchley’s bestselling novel about a rampaging shark into a cinematic event, feared he’d be fired.

Steven Spielberg's Jaws Almost Got A Comedic Sequel That Sounds Amazing
Image
How do you follow up a genre-defining, career-making, massively successful cinematic watershed motion picture like "Jaws?" The answer, apparently, is to make a string of sequels that succumb to increasingly diminished returns. While "Jaws 2" is a highly decent yet nowhere near as stellar follow-up that provided essentially more of the same thrills as the original (which is celebrating its 50th anniversary this month), "Jaws 3" is rightfully regarded as a massive let-down. Yes, "Jaws 3" is a generally fun, morally prescient time if you take it as a standalone shark thriller movie, but it's still a sad excuse for a sequel to one of the greatest movies ever made. It also begs another, more pressing question: How in the world did this happen?

The answer to that varies with each sequel, of course, and yet there may be a particular circumstance to blame in the case of "Jaws 3.

How To Watch The Jaws Movies In Order
Image
Stephen Spielberg's "Jaws" created the summer blockbuster in 1975. Taking over movie theaters across the world and traumatizing an entire generation, it forced people everywhere to think twice before stepping into the ocean (lest they become shark food).

The story of one town slowly unraveling as it's beset by a hungry human-eating great white shark terrified audiences with its spectacular photography, ominous score, and endearing performances. It also made Spielberg a household name and has, across the span of 50 years, grossed over $484 million at the box office thanks to its initial run and subsequent theatrical revival screenings.

With such ripping success, sequels were inevitably going to happen, and Universal Pictures was happy to throw chum into the water, giving audiences three more shark-infested films. They are as follows:

"Jaws" (1975) "Jaws 2" (1978) "Jaws 3" aka "Jaws 3D" (1983) "Jaws: The Revenge" (1987)

Unfortunately, none of these "Jaws" sequels ever get close to the magic of Spielberg's original,...

“I thought of Jaws as a sequel”: A Forgotten Steven Spielberg Horror Movie Led to Cinema’s First Real Blockbuster Before Star Wars
Image
Steven Spielberg rose to prominence during the 1970s, delivering one of the biggest blockbusters of all time with his second theatrical feature film. Jaws was released in 1975, two years before Star Wars changed the perception around Hollywood blockbusters.

As a result, the Spielberg directorial might as well be considered the first true blockbuster. However, the director’s chair almost did not go to Spielberg. In an interview, Spielberg reflected on his experience working on the now classic film.

Director Steven Spielberg (Credit: Time | YouTube).

Spielberg revealed that he initially viewed the film as a sequel to one of his lesser-known projects, given that he was a fairly new director when he was considered for Jaws. However, Spielberg only got the job after a different director fell out of the race, and here is everything you need to know about how Jaws connects to Spielberg’s earliest works.

Steven Spielberg's 'Jaws' Heads Back to Theaters for 50th Anniversary
Image
In 1975, Universal Pictures released a film that would impact the movie industry forever. Titled Jaws, it was directed by a relatively new filmmaker by the name of Steven Spielberg, who had landed the gig when producers Richard D. Zanuck and David Brown found themselves without a director for the exciting project about the aquatic monster. 50 years later, its legacy remains unquestionable, and TCM, Universal Pictures, and more, plan to throw the 50th birthday bash Jaws deserves.

As reported by Bloody Disgusting, this summer, modern viewers will get the chance to revisit Spielberg's groundbreaking movie. Jaws will return to theaters for the TCM Classic Film Festival in April. However, this won't be the only 50th anniversary presentation, as Universal is planning a nationwide re-release of the movie from Aug. 29 through Sept. 4.

‘Jury Duty’ Renewed for Season 2 at Prime Video
Image
“Jury Duty” will be back for Season 2 sooner than we think.

The Amazon Freevee comedy, which became a surprise hit for the platform and migrated over to Prime Video after the sibling streamer’s shuttering, already produced its next installment, according to media reports.

Amazon representatives declined to comment for the story.

The new season is believed to be set at a corporate retreat instead of a courtroom, according to a report from Variety. Filming took place in Los Angeles and Deadline reported the story will center around a David vs. Goliath theme.

“Jury Duty” was created by Lee Eisenberg, and Gene Stupnitsky. Season 1 followed breakout star Ronald Gladden in a documentary-style journey following his time as a juror, until it is revealed that the proceedings were fake from the start.

The series is executive produced by the pair alongside David Bernad, Ruben Fleischer (“Superstore”), Nicholas Hatton, Cody Heller (“Dummy”), Todd Schulman,...

‘Jury Duty’ Renewed for Season 2 at Amazon Prime Video, Has Already Been Filmed
Image
“Jury Duty” has been summoned once again.

The comedy series, which debuted on Amazon’s now-defunct streamer Freevee as a surprise hit in 2023, will run for a second season on Amazon Prime Video, Variety has learned from sources. Amazon did not comment on the renewal.

Additionally, a source tells Variety that Season 2 will be set at a corporate retreat rather than a courtroom, and that it was shot in the Los Angeles suburb of Agoura Hills. Amazon did not comment on this information.

Season 1 of the documentary-style project followed Ronald Gladden’s journey as a juror during a trial that gets increasingly more dysfunctional until it’s finally revealed that the entire case is fake and everyone besides him is a paid actor.

When asked by Variety about potential future seasons, “Jury Duty” showrunner Cody Heller said, “Obviously, it would have to be a whole different universe. You couldn’t just do jury duty again,...

One of the comedy breakouts of 2023 was Jury Duty, a documentary-style comedy for Amazon Freevee that featured James Marsden and other actors surrounding an unsuspecting juror at a trial. The Emmy-nominated comedy is back and — surprise — its second season is already in the can, sources tell Deadline. It will run on Prime Video where Freevee’s content migrated after Amazon’s free ad-supported streaming platform was shut down last November.

Details are being kept under wraps but we hear that the theme of the new installment is David vs. Goliath. Taking inspiration from classic 1980s movies such as Animal House and Caddyshack, it is about a small business going on a company retreat, with the real, unsuspecting person tested when a Goliath suddenly shows up, sources said.

To protect the integrity of the premise with the regular person not realizing that they are part of a scripted TV show, just...

Chiltern Firehouse, Host To Netflix’s Buzzy BAFTA Film Awards Party, Closed After Blaze — Update
Image
Update: London’s Chiltern Firehouse, which was due to host Netflix’s well-attended BAFTA Film Awards party on Sunday night, has closed its doors until further notice after a blaze on Friday. The building was evacuated and no one was harmed.

Andre Balazs, owner of Chiltern Firehouse, said in a statement: “Earlier this evening, a fire broke out at Chiltern Firehouse. We are grateful to confirm that no one was hurt, and our guests and staff safely evacuated. The fire has now been fully contained.

“It is with heartfelt gratitude and appreciation that we watched a remarkable 120 fire fighters from over 14 stations rapidly descend on what they told me was a hugely sentimental building for so many of them. We know in fact one of those who rushed to the Chiltern Firehouse this evening had been stationed in the building when it was a fire station 30 years ago. I am...

Watch: Unsettling 'Holiday House' Short Film Feat. AnnaSophia Robb
Image
"Wow you're home is super nice." It might be a good idea to never meet your fans. It can be super awkward if you ever meet them – maybe even dangerous. Yet another eerie new film about parasocial relationships. Holiday House is a short film created by Alex Heller, who also directed & starred in the indie film The Year Between a few years ago. Heller describes it as "mysterious, miniature movie." A content creator feels obligated to let her internet benefactor visit her workshop. His arrival explores uncomfortable boundaries of a parasocial friendship. Starring AnnaSophia Robb as Shelley & David Brown as Marky, with Antonio Marziale & Adrienne Becker. It is very similar to the other short called Followers about a similar home invasion. I also always reference Ingrid Goes West as the original film about parasocial relationships, where people create extremely unhealthy connections to folks they only know on social media. Freaky!

‘Ice Age 6’ Is Happening With Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Queen Latifah & More Back; Sixthquel Getting A Theatrical Release – Update
Image
Updated: Disney and 20th Century Animation announced Friday at D23 Brazil that Ice Age 6 is happening. The sixthquel will get a theatrical release. The original franchise was created by Blue Sky Studios, which Disney acquired through the 20th Century Fox merger, later shuttering the Oscar-winning animation division.

Original castmembers Ray Romano, John Leguizamo, Queen Latifah, Denis Leary and Simon Pegg are returning. The pic is currently being made.

Through five movies, the Ice Age pics have grossed $3.2 billion worldwide, but like all franchises, the weight of gravity weighs down at the box office with each sequel. The most recent movie, 2016’s Ice Age: Collision Course, grossed $408.5 million globally.

There were various short pics and series starring a woolly mammoth, sloth, saber-toothed tiger and other pre-historic animals. There was also the 2022 spinoff The Ice Age Adventures of Buck Wild.

This Ice Age is the first pic in the franchise since Disney bought Blue Sky.

A Few Good Men: This Tom Cruise classic stands the test of time
Image
In the early nineties, Tom Cruise was at a crossroads in his career. As he approached thirty, the time was fast approaching when he could no longer play the kind of “cool young guy” role that had made his eighties movies such huge successes. Indeed, the formula was starting to wear thin, with Days of Thunder underperforming at the U.S. box office. His follow-up, Far and Away, performed even worse, landing with a thud at the North American box office, despite it re-teaming Cruise with his now wife Nicole Kidman, whose career was starting to take off. It was time for Cruise to tweak the kind of movies he was making, and sure enough, his next film, A Few Good Men, would kick off a streak of 5 back-to-back $100 million hits, which would make him the most bankable actor in the world.

A Few Good Men was based on a play by Aaron Sorkin,...

Steven Spielberg Wanted These Two Actors To Play Quint In Jaws Before Robert Shaw
Image
You can't have "Jaws" without Quint, a modern Captain Ahab if he'd been hunting a great white shark rather than a white whale. It's difficult to picture anyone but Robert Shaw (in one of his last roles before his premature death in 1978) in the part, but the actor actually wasn't who director Steven Spielberg first had in mind.

In "Spielberg: The First Ten Years" by Laurent Bouzereau, Spielberg claimed his first choice for Quint was Lee Marvin. He wanted a big star and Marvin was famous for playing sinister tough guys. See: "The Big Heat," "Point Blank," "The Dirty Dozen," and "The Man Who Shot Liberty Valance" (directed by the man who taught Spielberg how to frame a horizon.) Marvin, though, said no. Spielberg recounted: "What I heard was that [Marvin] wanted to go fishing for real! He took his fishing very seriously and didn't want to do it from a 'movie' boat.

‘9-1-1’ Cast Staged Major Comeback on ‘Celebrity Family Feud’ — Was It Enough to Win?
Image
The casts of 9-1-1 and Jury Duty faced off in the latest episode of Celebrity Family Feud, and we have to admit, at the beginning, we didn’t see how the former could win. Oliver Stark, Ryan Guzman, Aisha Hinds, Tracie Thoms, and Bryan Safi from 9-1-1, playing for the American Red Cross, faced off against Ronald Gladden, Cassandra Blair, Maria Russell, David Brown, Susan Berger, and Edy Modica from Jury Duty, playing for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Los Angeles. Stark and Gladden faced off first. “We asked 100 men, fill in the blank, you know a date’s not into you if she ____ after you kiss her,” host Steve Harvey said. Stark rang in first with “comes up with an excuse,” but it wasn’t on the board. “Pulls out her phone,” Gladden said, and it, too, wasn’t on the board. Then it went to Guzman,...

The Real Reason Steven Spielberg Refused To Direct Jaws 2
Image
While "Jaws" wasn't Steven Spielberg's first movie, it was the movie that put Spielberg on the map. Plagued by production woes (it went over-budget and over-schedule), there was a really good chance that "Jaws" could've ended Spielberg's career just as it was getting started. Instead, the killer shark flick pretty much invented the summer blockbuster as we know it and made Spielberg a superstar. Audiences lined up around the block to see what Spielberg had created, and the massive success pretty much ensured Spielberg could do whatever the hell he wanted for the rest of his career. So what did Spielberg want to do next? Well, it sure wasn't a "Jaws" sequel, that's for sure. In 1975, Spielberg — according to John Baxter's book "Steven Spielberg: The Unauthorised Biography" — scoffed at the idea, saying that making a sequel "is just a cheap carny trick."

But studio Universal definitely wanted a sequel.

“We want you to direct ‘Jaws'”: Even Steven Spielberg Faced Competition from Another Director Who Nearly Replaced Him in His Own Breakthrough Movie
Image
Even the mighty Steven Spielberg had a moment where his directing throne was almost snatched from under him. Picture this: just as Jaws was poised to sink its teeth into cinema history, another director nearly swooped in to replace Spielberg for his own breakthrough. Yup, Hollywood’s golden boy faced some stiff competition right before making shark-infested waters iconic.

It’s wild to think that the film that launched Spielberg’s career into the stratosphere could’ve had a totally different captain at the helm. With the pressure on and the studio having second thoughts, it’s a wonder Spielberg held onto his seat—and thank goodness he did. Imagine a world where Jaws wasn’t Spielberg’s big bite into fame!

The Must-List: Seven Films About Summer Vacations Gone Off the Rails
Olivia Colman at an event for The Oscars (2019)
From Olivia Colman’s fraught sojourn to the Greek Isles in The Lost Daughter to Jessie Buckley’s terrifying trip up the M5 to the English countryside in Men and M. Night’s bummer beaches in Old, taking a little “me time” away from home is often the single biggest mistake any movie character could possibly make. Horror, psychological drama, comedy, mystery, rom-com. The genre hardly matters. In film, the simple act of taking a vacation is rarely the relaxing, restorative interlude one hopes that it might be, placing uneasy personalities in uncertain—even harrowing—circumstances.

So with another holiday weekend upon us and the summer theoretically in full swing, it’s time to make peace with travel advisories being a moving target and hot spots foreign and domestic getting hotter by the minute. No surprise then, that many of us now eye these “escapes” with more than a little bit of skepticism.

A Low-Ranking Worker Finds Himself in the Eye of a Viral Data Leak Storm in Matt Porter’s ‘See Saw’
Image
When low-ranking worker Glen wakes up to discover his personal data has been leaked and is spreading virally all over the world, it brings an unexpected tension to his relationship with his girlfriend. In the brief eleven and a half minutes of See Saw, Director Matt Porter’s viral culture comedy, the filmmaker is able to capture the overwhelming paranoia that comes with being at the centre of a viral leak whilst also finding time for moments of levity. What started as an idea for a much larger short, in the wake of the Sony Pictures hack in 2014, has been distilled into a story which conveys the personal amidst the seismic, and how these moments of great stress can force us to face our truth. Dn caught up with Porter to learn more about the origins of his short film as well as the collaboration he had with Dp John de Menil...

Jury Duty Cast & Character Guide
Image
The longform comedy prank show Jury Duty features a robust cast of improv comedy performers. The lead, Ronald Gladden, was the only civilian involved, unaware that he was being pranked. X-Men star James Marsden also appeared in the show, playing a heightened version of himself.

The cast of Jury Duty is one of the most unique collections of performers on a modern television project. The Amazon Freevee comedy show, which premiered on April 7, 2023, was co-created by The Office executive producers Lee Eisenberg and Gene Stupnitsky, who had also previously collaborated on the show Smilf. The concept of the series was to transform a prank show into a full-on longform comedy, with a loosely scripted parody trial playing out in front of a participant who was unaware that the jury duty in which he was participating was fake.

In order to maintain the ruse at the center of the Jury Duty show,...
